Modern "poems" that make no effort to have consistent morae and/or rhyme scheme or any actual theme piss me off. Not every piece of writing that has an emotional impact is a poem, and physical phonomena (art, mistakes, snapshots of daily life, etc.) cannot be poems. You can write poems about them, yes, but they are not poems, and no amount of wheedling will convince me otherwise.

Haiku and waka are poems bc they have distinct patterns of morae and a clear theme. Rhyming isn't strictly necessary, especially in Japanese poems, but it certainly helps. What haiku and waka have that modern "poetry" lacks is a coherent theme or topic. Generally, haiku and waka are about nature, some aspect of it or its entirety, but—and for those following along at home, this is the most important part—they're SUBTLE. S-U-B-T-L-E. They do not beat you over the head with their theme/topic, they let you figure it out your own self.

Here is a haiku I just wrote for this post:

"Sudden burst of speed; thundering along the floor; joyous, twisting leap."

Can you tell me what the theme(s)/topic(s) of this haiku is? (HINT: Think of it like a riddle.)

A short, emotional story explicitly about any topic is not poem, and writing in all lowercase and breaking the lines up in nonsensical ways with "i think" getting a line of its very own doesn't help. They are short, poorly-written emotional stories. They have no consistent morae and they're trying too hard to get an emotional response out of you. Yes, this includes that stupid "the tiger is out" """poem.""" I don't care that a kid wrote it—I wrote a better haiku when I was seven or eight.

Part of the rules of poetry (or at least, good poetry) is that you must not state your theme/topic anywhere in your work—title or body.

Omg you need to check out this new show. Well okay it's a cartoon but don't worry it's good. It's produced and written by a lesbian how cool is that? See it looks like a goofy and silly clone of Gravity Falls and Steven Universe and Adventure Time. But it actually deals with real deep stuff like identity and self-image. PLUS the main character is non-binary! I love it when children's cartoons are made to Have a Conversation about real issues. This makes me feel like such a boomer, but I hate it how all media has been TikTok-ified and algorithm primed. Songs are shorter, designed for short viral clips rather than a full listening experience. TV shows and movies are sloppier, dragging on and on, assuming you’ll be on your phone and have it only in the background. Even books have been chewed up and spat back out as easily consumable tropes, with bite-sized chapters and mannequins for characters. This late stage capitalism hellscape we’re in has made art into something you snack on rather than savor.
