How to Close a Reading, as My Grandma Taught Me

“Interpreting the last card does not mean you are done. You have ten more things to do before the reading is through.”

1. Count the major arcana.

The more there are, the stronger the reading’s predictions will impact the querent’s life. If there are none or just one, almost none of it will matter in the long run.

2. Note the sequence of the major arcana.

If the querent is asking about someone, and the major arcana are between 0 and 16, that person is not meant to stay in their life. If the question is about a dream or an opportunity, and the cards fall between 17 and 21, it will manifest completely.

3. Count the cards from each suit.

The presence of all suits predicts a balanced outcome. More Wands means strong passion. More Swords means anxiety or manipulation. More Cups means the heart is running the show. More Pentacles means wealth is about to diminish or grow.

4. Mind the aces and the tens.

Two or more aces means the situation is only just beginning. Two or more tens means it is now coming to a good or bad ending.

5. Note the multiples between two and nine.

Persephone's Serum of Beauty

In the tale of Eros and Psyche, Aphrodite sends Psyche to the Realm of Hades to retrieve Persephone's own Serum of Beauty. Upon her return from the Underworld, Psyche defies the warnings not to peek within the box, and discovers that the Serum is the Essence of Sleep.

We can honor Persephone and Aphrodite both with restful sleep.

This recipe was taught to me by a Gujarati friend, based off of an old ayurvedic remedy for sleep. It reminds me of the tale of Psyche, and the Goddesses' lesson to us of the importance of sleep.

6 oz non-dairy milk*

4 oz pomegranate juice

1 tbsp honey

2 tsp rose petals

1 tsp chamomile

1/8 tsp vanilla

1/4 tsp ashwagandha (if you can find it)

A pinch of turmeric

A pinch of cardamom

Combine all ingredients in a small sauce pan, warm, and froth with a wisk. Infuse with your positive intentions of calm, sleep, and peace. Thank Persephone and Aphrodite for their blessing and guidance. Strain out the flower petals. Drink warm before bed.

*My friend swears by almond milk, but I'm allergic to that and use soy. Cashew, coconut, rice, hemp, and oat also work. Cow milk may curdle when exposed to pomegranate juice.

I drank it with some dragon fruit (omitted most of the honey) and it made me so sleepy right away.

Signs in the Sixth House

The sixth house is where we associate the sign of Virgo (ruled by the planet Mercury) but the goddess of Harvest and Fertility, Ceres or Demeter is assigned with the constellation. Demeter had a daughter named Persephone (Goddess of Spring) and Zeus thought of Persephone as the ideal wife for Hades who was the God of Underworld and not happy with his position. The myth is famously called “The Kidnapping of Persephone”. In the end, it is decided that Persephone only has to spend part of the year with Hades in the underworld and this is when the seasonal cycles come to play. Well, I see this house as the loss of childhood (coming after 5th house), growing pains, the responsibilities one comes face to face, taking care of your own health… Living is not all about fun and games no longer. The house represents the necessary actions or the discipline one has to adapt into their lives in order for their lively-hoods to blossom.

The experience for some Pisces can be quite fretful, like they are always walking the brink of panic. Pisces can become nervous, jittery, reactive, and unsettled. The chameleon can also be an escape portal, the opportunity to be a different person in another world. But nothing with Pisces is ever still and stable, it never takes long for the alarmist to reappear. Pisces can be so easily provoked by their immediate environment they jump at shadows. It can generate constant, underlying apprehension that causes them to instantly scan their environment for threat or peril. There can be many players that hand this card to Pisces. Neptune and Jupiter co-rule Pisces. Neptune soaks dream through everyday life, conducting fantasy, glamour, and illusion. Jupiter blows the giant balloon of disproportion. So this captivating Neptunian imagination can be fooled by its own hand and fantasise catastrophe instead of beauty. It creates worry rather than peace. It can be difficult to dissociate reality from unreality with Neptune. Jupiter further embellishes and reinforces these worries, expanding and expanding until these seem very real and possible. It’s kind of in the way that Pisces can make you concerned with things you hadn’t thought about before, but it’s the same way that they introduce you to experiences, sensations, and satiation like you never have before. Like a Pisces trying to be grounded but losing it completely in the process. It is essential that one fish never swims too far from the other, and they don’t separate these parts of themselves. When they conduct the instruments of their two world’s together it’s purely heavenly, but Pisces is every shade of duality, so heaven and hell pass through one another.

As she walks, the green of the leaves follows her, leeching away so the oranges and reds beneath show through. She knows not to run or she might cause a bad harvest, she’s done so too many times.

Instead she channels the flutters in her heart into letting new growth spring up in her wake, plants that begin with Spring but are only truly alive in Autumn.

Just like her.

She nears the place and cannot help the quickening of her steps, for she knows what lies beyond the clearing, inside the hole that gapes like a mouth shouting in delight.

Her mother compared the doorway to a mouth screaming in fear, which says more about her mother than the goddess probably realizes.

She knows this place well, knows the dirt as she climbs back up to bring Spring and greenness back to the world of humanity. She knows the weeds and grass that rings it as well as she knows the surface of her own skin.

She stands and takes a deep breath, letting the world turn to Autumn behind her. She leaps, red leaves and green grass blades following her and the petals of the white flower in her hair mixed in among them.

It’s a long way down but her body is relaxed and unworried. Her eyes are still open as she watches herself descend to fall into two strong arms.

“Hello, Persephone,” Hades smiles at her, the foreboding face softening.

“Hello, my darling husband,” she responds, as the last detritus from the world above falls around them. “How has our realm been since I was last here? Is my garden still growing? Are the souls behaving? Where is Cerberus?”

Hades laughs, the sound a little rusty from six months of disuse. “Our realm is all the better for the return of its queen.” He sets her down but presses her body close, kissing her hair, “As am I.”
