Reminders for new ao3 users (in no particular order):
- filter your searches like you would on a library website or in an online catalogue
- don’t post placeholders, fic searches, or recommendations as fics. DON’T! It’s against ao3 TOS
- there is no algorithm. ao3 sorts by date posted/updated unless you filter with specific search criteria
- ao3 is a non profit. that means it doesn’t sell ads to make money — it only survives on donations. this is why it can show you so many fics without ever flashing an ad or pop up at you!
- report fics that break TOS when you see them (I.e., placeholder fics, searches) to help other users navigate better
- the tag “dead dove, do not eat” doesn’t equate to gore/awfulness automatically. it is a complementary tag that enhances current tags. E.g., if the fic is tagged “gore” and “dead dove, do not eat” the author really wants you to mind the gore tag
- most fandoms have a variation of “no beta, we die like (x character)” and they all link back to the “No beta” tag
- publishing a new fic sometimes means it won’t show up in the fandom/pairing tag for a few minutes
- subscribers receive update emails at different times, depending on when you update/publish your fic. there’s no good way to predict when an e-mail will be sent — it can be in 30 seconds, or two hours later
- some fics are restricted by authors to those with ao3 accounts only. if you see a blue lock in the upper right corner, that fic is only visible to logged in ao3 users
- you can block commenters now! this didn’t use to be a thing
- updating a fic just to stay at the top of the pairing tag/fandom tag is a dick move. unless you’re legitimately editing or adding chapters, this just annoys readers and fellow authors, and people will skip over your fic
- make sure that you tag your ships correctly, both romantic and platonic. Putting an “&” between a pair of names means that the ship is platonic. Putting a “/” between the characters means its romantic. For example: “Greg & Steve” = platonic. “Greg/Steve” = romantic. They are NOT interchangable.
- if your fic includes original character/s or reader insert or y/n or etc, then TAG THOSE IN THE CHARACTER TAGS. Not just in the relationship tags!! They are characters in the story, so include them in the character tags. Failing to do so means people who want to find fics with those tags won’t be able to, and people who want to exclude fics with those tags won’t be able to.
- NEVER EVER EVER ADD A LINK TO A PATREON OR KO-FEE ACCOUNT OR ETC. Ao3’s entire legal protection hinges on the fact that no one is making money from fics. If you start commissioning fics or linking to a monetary platform, you are in breach of the Ao3 terms, risking legal action, and risking ao3 as a whole. There are loads of authors/companies who WILL sue if they think you’re making money off their intellectual property.
- seconding what OP said about Dead Dove Do Not Eat. It doesn’t automatically mean “gore”; it just means “heed the tags.” It means “Hey yeah when I tagged this as [thing] I was NOT fucking around, ok? Only read this fic if you’re OK with reading [thing].”
additions from someone who has posted way too much on this site please listen to me:
there are no best times to post but generally sunday and monday are a good zone for traffic
you must double check and make sure the publication date matches the day a chapter is posted or it won’t show up on the first page of updates. sometimes you have to physically edit the posting date multiple times for this to be fixed.
on that note: artificially editing your publication date so your fic shows up at the top when you haven’t added a chapter is the dickest of moves and will make you a pariah. do not do this. yes everyone will notice.
editing existing chapters doesn’t count as updating a fic and won’t change the publication date.
ao3 usually adds weird spaces after italics if you copy and paste in your writing pre-formatted. it doesn’t add these until after you’ve saved a draft or posted so you have to re-edit.
check the “add space after paragraph” option in your word precessor of choice to avoid having to delete an extra space between all your paragraphs on ao3.
when you add a second chapter to a one chapter fic, your original start/end authors notes will now be appended onto the notes of every chapter unless you move them to the now extant first chapter notes sections. this is confusing, but you’ll see what i mean.
to post on anon: add your fic to the anonymous (anonymous) collection. it’ll take up to fifteen to minutes to show in the tag once posted. it’ll show up (to you) as AUTHOR NAME: fic title. no one else sees it this way. it will never show up on your own dashboard unless you go to your stats page. if you ever de-anon, all your subs will get an email about it as if it were just posted.
if you update multiple fics at once, ao3 will group the updates into one email.
to transfer a fic to a new ao3 account: make a new account, make the new account a co-author, remove the old account as co-author.
you cannot mention money changing hands for fic on ao3, ever. don’t say commissions. say a fic was requested if you must say anything. your fic can get taken down for this.
reply to comments or never complain about engagement in fandom.
per that: EVERY TIME YOU EDIT A COMMENT, THE AUTHOR GETS A NEW COPY OF YOUR COMMENT IN THEIR EMAIL. we can see all the edits. be aware.
tagging is both a warning and an enticement, do so accordingly. you really don’t need to tag things that fall outside that unless you want to.
on that note: please don’t do the “short fics for 300 different fandoms in one fic” thing. no one wants to scroll past that. i mean you can but it just makes it harder for people to find the thing you’ve written that they want to read.
if you are really bad at summaries just think of it as a movie tag line and don’t say you’re bad at summaries. don’t neg your own fic.
re all the questions i saw in replies: fic searches are people looking for specific fics. i don’t know what the fuck a placeholder fic is but these aren’t fanworks and you can’t post them. you can’t post discord links or rp requests or complaints about fandom. you can post fanart and meta essays. that’s allowed.
“Read by Author” tag is not a tag to say that you proofread the fic. It is specifically for podfic, saying that the fic is read outloud by the author
Remember the Block and Mute feature. Block means that someone cannot interact with your works. Mute, however, means you will not see the person’s works in the search. If you don’t want to see fics by a specific author, mute them.
Basic html works in comments. If you want to add an image, use <img src=“URL”> with the image url replacing URL. Keep the quotation marks.
Comments are not for critique. Unless the author specifically asks for critique, you are a jerk if you start pointing out everything you dislike. It doesn’t matter how vile you think the content is. If you don’t like it, just back out without saying anything.
If you do not want a work attached to your account at all, you can Orphan it. When you Orphan a fic, you can no longer edit it or delete it. This cannot be undone. If you just want to be anonymous, use the Anonymous feature described above.
If you wish to make a collection of fic that includes all of the fic you have read, consider making a collection of your bookmarks instead. Not every author wants their work to be in a million collections, but you don’t have to ask permission to make a collection of bookmarks.
The “Inspired By” option is great if you draw inspiration from another author’s fic. And it helps give credit to other amazing fanfic writers.
Fic can be downloaded in many different ways. If you want to download a fic and use it like an ebook, go for the EPUB version. But all versions have their merits.
No fanfic author in existence is going to be upset that you made fanart.
“Blanket permissions” AKA a writer saying if they’re cool with people making podfics/translations etc are usually going to be in the writer’s profile tab. When in doubt check there.

i don’t think love at first sight exists but i think you feel something. not just romantically, but when you meet anyone who’s going to be important to you…anything stronger than what you were feeling before, without even knowing it. attraction, dislike, whatever. something you might forget the next day but in that moment it’s something. like a little jolt in ur chest idk.
this is what i meant
The “draw” of AI doesn’t work on me for the same reason that the Ring couldn’t tempt Samwise. Because I LIKE to write. I like to make things, I like the process of making things, instead of just the end result.

The Granddaughter Capítulo 6 - The weight of an inheritance
Previous chapter
Marinette looked at the cookie dough in front of her, sighing deeply. She had arrived at her apartment more than four hours ago and had decided that the best way to relax was in the kitchen, and she ended up realizing that she had generated a fairly large amount of treats in her kitchen. She finished assembling the cookie sheet, taking the cake out of the oven and putting the cookies in to bake. She placed the cake on the counter to cool when she heard her cell phone ring, frowning at who was calling so late. She felt her anxiety rise immediately, answering promptly.
"Grandpa? Is everything alright there? Did something happen?" she asked with a slight tone of concern.
"Everything's fine, my dear, I just called to see how you are. I imagined you might have trouble sleeping..." Alfred replied in a calm tone of voice that completely betrayed what he felt at that moment. He needed to be sure she was alright, that she was alive. He needed to hear her voice and be sure that the images he had seen earlier were in the past.
"Uh... I was trying to calm down. It was getting late to look for something to do outside, and with everything that happened earlier, my mind couldn't switch off. I needed an escape, so I think I overdid it a bit here..." she said, laughing slightly as she looked desperately at the excess food on the table.
Alfred chuckled softly on the other end of the line. He knew how his granddaughter let her mind wander when she was anxious. "I just wanted to make sure you were okay after today. You know you're the most important person in my life, right? I need you to be okay so I can be okay, my dear."
Marinette sighed on the other end of the line. She felt guilty about the stress she was causing her grandfather, but there wasn't much she could do. "I'm not going to lie to you and say everything's fine, but I want you to know that I'll be okay," she said, a little disheartened. "I'll try to sleep as soon as I get things organized here a bit."
Alfred sighed, glancing at the clock on his bedroom wall, noticing how late it already was. "I'll be there tomorrow after lunch and we can talk, okay? Take a hot bath, it will help you relax and try to get some sleep."
"I promise I will. Goodnight Grandpa, rest well."
"You too, my dear. Oh, and don't forget," he paused briefly, hearing her make a soft noise on the other end of the line, "I love you and I'll always be by your side."
Marinette smiled, her eyes filled with tears, replying in a choked voice, "I love you too."
After they both hung up, Marinette returned to the kitchen to finish, organize, and put away everything she had done. Her mind was still full; she needed to clear her head. Should she tell her grandfather everything? She was really inclined to do so, but her mind couldn't shut off all the possible scenarios. She spent hours awake, brooding over the decision she had made and the weight she was about to share. She needed someone to support her, she knew that. Kwamis, even Tikki, convinced her of that. Maybe it was really time to try trusting someone. And with these thoughts, she fell asleep near dawn, sleeping a restless and brief sleep, but it was a familiar and insistent noise at the door that finally pulled her out of bed.
------------
It was almost eleven in the morning when she opened the door, squinting against the hallway light. Alfred was there, impeccable as always, but with a slight shadow of worry under his eyes that did not escape his granddaughter.
"Grandpa? I thought we were going to meet later..."
"I couldn't wait, my dear," he admitted, entering and closing the door gently. His gaze swept over her face, searching for signs of distress. "And you seem to have slept less than a cat on watch."
Marinette pulled the navy blue silk robe closer to her body, leading it to the kitchen, where the evidence of her sleepless night was still laid out. The marble countertop was covered with chilled baking trays, clean pans, and an impressive array of packaged treats: cookies of different flavors, cakes, cinnamon rolls, croissants, and small petit fours decorated with delicate icing.
Alfred raised an eyebrow, the corner of his mouth lifting into a sad, understanding smile. “Cooking therapy, I see. All the stress is because of the conversation we need to have or Adrien’s call?”
“Both,” she murmured, turning on the stove to make coffee. “And a whirlwind of other things. I… need to start somewhere, don’t I?”
“Start with what caused you the most distress yesterday,” he suggested, grabbing an apron hanging behind the door and tying it with precise movements. “The call you received yesterday. What does Adrien really want?”
Marinette prepared the French press with hands that trembled slightly. “He wants me to come back. To London, to be near him. He says he regrets breaking up, that he was confused, scared… that seeing me in that last battle, seeing me… fall, changed everything.” She paused, filling the kettle with boiling water. “He wants to know where I am. He said he would come, no matter the city. I refused to say. It was… intense. He sounded desperate, and that only made me feel worse, because the only thing I could feel was immense exhaustion.”
Alfred began organizing the ingredients for the lunch they would make together – an old habit that always calmed them. He picked up onions and garlic. “And what do you want, Marinette? Not what you think you should do for him, or out of any sense of guilt. What does Marinette need?”
She was silent for a long moment, watching the dark, aromatic coffee brew in the press. “I need peace, Grandpa. I need a place where memories don’t scream at me from every corner. I need… to find myself again, without the weight of the Miraculous on my shoulders every second. And I need to know that he’ll be okay, but that it’s not my responsibility to heal him. I’ve already tried. And I almost drowned in the process.” Her voice was a hoarse whisper. “Does that make me a horrible person?”
Alfred put the knife down and went to her, enveloping her in a firm, silent embrace. “It makes you human, my dear. Brave enough to save the world, and wise enough to know that you can’t save everyone, especially from what they need to do to save themselves.”
She buried her face in the impeccable shoulder of his tuxedo, breathing in the familiar scent that represented her home. For a few minutes, they stayed like that, until the sound of water boiling for the pasta made them separate. They worked in synchronized silence – she sautéing the vegetables, he preparing the sauce. The joint action, the shared ritual, was slowly breaking the ice around her heart.
After lunch, sitting on the balcony of the apartment on the top floor of the building, Marinette prepared the tea. The same blend she had brought from Paris, the inheritance from Master Fu. Alfred's cup trembled almost imperceptibly when she handed it to him.
“Are you ready to tell me the rest?” he asked, his voice soft but incisive.
Marinette looked at the mist of steam rising from her own cup, as if she saw the past materializing there.
“It all started with a wrong choice,” she said, her voice low and distant. “Master Fu… he made a mistake when he was young. He lost two Miraculous, the Peacock and the Butterfly. He spent his whole life hiding, protecting what remained, trying to correct his mistake from afar. He grew old alone, carrying that guilt.”
She paused, searching for the words to describe the kind and wise man who had been her guiding light. “When I met him, he was already very old. But he was still agile, and his mind… was like a library of ancient wisdom. I helped him with his business, did his shopping. He taught me how to make this tea. He taught me about balance.” A nostalgic smile touched her lips, but quickly faded. “He always said that the universe conspires for balance. And that sometimes the greatest reparation for a mistake is not to hide it, but to prepare someone better for what comes next.”
Alfred nodded slowly, connecting the dots. “He was preparing you.”
“I didn’t know. Not at the time. I only saw a lonely old man who enjoyed my company.” She took a deep breath. “And then,” she continued, her voice picking up a narrative thread, as if it were easier to talk about events than emotions, “came the first test. I was fourteen. I helped a Chinese man cross the street – it was him, of course, in disguise, a final test. That same afternoon, a boy at my school was akumatized. Stoneheart.” She closed her eyes again, feeling the memory of the primal panic, the overwhelming confusion. “I was a teenager who knew nothing. The minimal training he had given me wasn’t enough for what we were going to face. All I wanted was to help. Then, Tikki – the kwami of Creation – appeared. The box chose me to be Ladybug, the heroine who would be on the front lines.”
The words began to flow then, a contained river that finally broke through the dam. She spoke of the first battles, clumsy and terrifying, feeling the double burden: that of fighting and that of protecting the secret of an infinite magical relic. Of the partnership with Chat Noir, of the joy and the burden of not being able to reveal her true identity, nor her true function. Of the countless times he fell in combat and she had to fight alone, carrying the weight of two Miraculous, of an entire possible future, with the constant fear that the box would be discovered. She spoke of the growing distrust, the necessary lies, the isolation that corroded her adolescence, and how she discovered that the man she helped almost daily, Master Fu, was the current Guardian.
"And then one day, Hawkmorth found the Guardian and almost took the box with the Miraculous. It was my fault." She paused, trying to put her thoughts and emotions in order. “I was careless and put everything at risk. We managed to escape, we opened a portal to London, where we found Mariane.”
“The night that… the night he passed the guardianship to me, was peaceful. We made tea. He was quieter than usual, but smiling. Then, he took the box – that box where the fate of the world was – and placed it in front of me. He said that his journey as Guardian had come to an end. That his years of escape and vigilance were fulfilled. He told me… he told me that he had been watching me for a long time. That I had a pure heart, immense creative force, and a resilience that he had never seen in someone so young.”
Marinette closed her eyes, as if reliving the moment. “He performed the ritual. Words in a language I didn’t understand, but which seemed to vibrate in the air. The box… glowed. And then, he looked at me and said: ‘The duty is now yours, Marinette Dupain-Cheng. Protect them. Use the wisdom I failed to have. And remember: a Guardian is not an owner, but a protector. Your life will no longer be just yours.’ He seemed… relieved. And sad. As if he had passed on a burden, but also his only reason for living.”
“And then?” Alfred asked, his voice a whisper.
“I left the next day. He no longer remembered me or the Order, the Miraculous. Nothing. He only vaguely recognized Marianne, and now they had a plan to finally rest together.” She opened her eyes, and they were shining with restrained tears. “About a year later, a friend of his in London wrote to me. Master Fu and Marianne were found… they passed away peacefully, sleeping. He left me the inheritance and left, so that no one could use it to find me.”
The silence on the balcony was profound, heavy with the weight of a final sacrifice and absolute trust.
“I couldn’t tell anyone, Grandpa. Not even my parents. The Guardian is a secret within a secret. I was so alone.”
She spoke of the alliance with Wonder Woman, of the months of intensive training on Themyscira, where she learned to channel her strength not only as Ladybug, but as Marinette, as Guardian. She talked about the agonizing pressure of using multiple miraculous simultaneously, of feeling the different consciousnesses of the kwamis dancing in her mind, a symphony of power and risk of madness, while Fu’s voice whispered in her memory about the dangers of abusing this privilege. Her voice faltered as she described the exhaustion that followed each of those times, a throbbing headache that seemed to tear at her very essence, a physical reminder of the cost of commanding ancient magic. She recounted how her magic had evolved, how the memories of other guardians had somehow also reached her, whether through meditation or ancient records. Now, she was a magic user and Ladybug. “The growth of my abilities caught the attention of the Celestial Guardian, who also confirmed what Fu had done: I was the Guardian. The responsibility for all those powers, for that entire history, was mine from the first day I met Master Fu.”
“And then came the climax. The final battle. We knew it would be the end,” she whispered, her white fingers swirling around the cold cup. “We had a plan. I would be the bait, the Multimouse. It was the most agile identity, the hardest to predict, and it allowed me a level of depersonalization… I wasn’t the Guardian at that moment, I was just a piece on the board. Hawkmoth… he was so fast. Faster than any of us. The sword…” She swallowed hard, and Alfred saw her gaze lost, fixed on a distant and terrifying point. “I saw it coming. I could have dodged. But if I did, the opening we created for Chat’s Cataclysm and Ladybug’s Lucky Charm would be lost. It was a fraction of a second. A calculation. By a commander. By a Guardian willing to sacrifice the piece to win the game.”
She described the pain not as a stab, but as an absolute cold that spread from her abdomen to her entire body. The sensation of falling, but without hitting the ground. The vision of Chat Noir’s desperate face above her, his lips moving, but no sound coming. And then… nothing. A silent, dark void. Not even the kwamis in his mind, just an absolute and terrifying silence.
“And then,” she continued, a lone tear tracing a path down her face, “I gasped for air. Suddenly. As if I’d been submerged. I was back, the hole in my suit repaired by the healing, but the cold… the cold was still there, inside my bones. And his eyes… Adrien’s, when he found me… he was looking at me, but it was as if he were seeing a ghost. I was a ghost. Something he had lost and that magic brought back, but not completely. Never completely. And in my mind, the kwamis were silent. A silence of mourning. They felt the death of a part of their Guardian. And I felt the weight of the box, of Fu’s legacy, heavier than ever. I survived, but at what cost?”
She recounted the months that followed. About Adrien drifting away, about the heavy silence between them, about the decision to end things coming from him – an act she interpreted as pity, as an inability to cope with the guilt of having watched her die. And about her own descent: the recurring nightmares where she saw herself and Fu disappearing into the darkness, the panic in enclosed spaces that resembled the darkness of death, the hypervigilance that made her jump at the slightest noise, always on guard, always the Protector. The constant fear that, if she were akumatized now, with all this pain, there would be no force in the world capable of containing her, and the box would fall into the wrong hands.
“I was drowning in Paris,” she concluded, her voice a worn thread. “The Guardian was failing. The heroine was exhausted. The girl was lost. I needed to get out, I needed to be away. From Adrien, from the memories, from the weight of being the savior and the guardian that everyone expected to be strong all the time. I just wanted… to be nobody for a while. To forget that there was a magic key hidden in my closet that could change the world.”
The afternoon sun had moved, lengthening the shadows on the balcony. The tea in Alfred's cup was cold and untouched. He watched her, his granddaughter, this young woman who had inherited a cosmic legacy from a man seeking redemption, who had carried the world on his shoulders and now trembled under the weight of his own history and the history entrusted to him. He saw not only the girl he loved, but the warrior, the strategist, the Guardian, the survivor.
He stood, his chair creaking softly on the concrete floor. He approached her, kneeling beside her armchair, and took her cold hands between his own, warm and firm.
“My dear, brave, and incredible girl,” he said, each word laden with deep emotion. “Fu saw in you what I always saw: an unparalleled strength. He didn’t give you a burden, Marinette. He entrusted you with a legacy. And you honored it beyond all expectation. You are not alone in this. I am here. You gave me your deepest secret, and I will guard it with my life. But more than that, I will carry you. The burden, the memory, the pain. We share this now. The Guardian has an ally. And the granddaughter has her grandfather.”
Marinette looked at him, her blue eyes flooded with unshed tears. In him, she saw not only acceptance, but a profound understanding. He had known Fu. He knew the weight of a duty greater than himself. And he was saying that she didn’t need to carry it alone.
And then, as if a rope that held her upright had been cut, she collapsed forward, burying her face in his chest, and wept. They weren't loud sobs, but a deep, guttural cry, from someone who could finally, finally, share the weight of the world.
Alfred held her, stroking her hair, murmuring words of comfort in a low, steady tone. He let her cry until there were no more tears, until her shoulders stopped trembling and she leaned against him, exhausted but lighter—as if some of that deadly cold she had described had been dissipated by his warmth.
When she pulled away, her face swollen but her eyes brighter, Alfred picked up his cold cup. “Now,” he said, in a tone that blended the tenderness of a grandfather with the practicality of a sergeant, “we have a logistical problem. You've produced the equivalent of a banquet for a small nation. What do you intend to do with all of it?”
A small, trembling smile appeared on Marinette's lips. “I… used to take it to a community center near my parents’ bakery. Here… I don’t know any.”
Alfred thought for a moment, his fingers drumming on the table. “I know someone who, despite their many… quirks, has a heart in the right place and frequents several of these places.” He picked up his cell phone. “Let me make a call,” he commented, stepping away with his cup to leave it in the kitchen.
“Let’s start over,” Marinette murmured to herself, wiping her face with the back of her hand and getting up to take a shower. Upon returning to the living room, she noticed that Alfred had already organized everything on the balcony and was beginning to put away what she had prepared.
“I think now is the time to start thinking about what to do,” she commented, already searching for different containers to store things. “I need to decide where to start over.”
“You don’t need to start over, you’re doing very well from where you are. You just need a change of direction, my dear,” Alfred corrected gently. “The Guardian needs a safe base. And the heroine needs a new cause. Maybe starting by feeding the hungry would be a good start, no masks, no magic. Just humanity.” He commented, seeing her smile slightly. It was the first time since she arrived in Gotham that he had seen his granddaughter with an expression of determination.
Before she could even answer, the doorbell rang. She looked at her grandfather, wondering who it could be, seeing him smile slightly. Marinette tilted her head slightly to the side, shaking it negatively immediately afterward, going to open the door. “Monsieur Todd?” she said as soon as she opened the door.
“Oh, hey firecracker. Alfred said you needed help.” He said as he entered and she closed the door behind him. “You can call me Jason. Hey Alfie, I brought the boxes you asked for too, wow, that’s really quite a lot.” he said, commenting on the excess of food. “Let’s put everything away and then leave it at one of the community centers that serve women and children. This will be super useful there,” Jason commented, already helping to organize everything.
And for the first time since Hawkmoth was defeated, Marinette felt a spark of something she hadn’t felt in a long time: a pang of renewed purpose. Perhaps, in Gotham, she could learn to be both: the Guardian who would honor Fu’s trust, and the Marinette her grandfather saw – a young woman who could find light even in the darkness. One step at a time.

Hi everyone, I hope you're all well… I'd like to thank you for the many messages I've received in the meantime. I've been and still am having several family problems. My father has Alzheimer's, and it's a difficult disease for everyone.
I'm not sure when I'll post the next chapter, but please know that I haven't abandoned the story. It's just been very difficult to keep up with things.
Well, I hope you enjoy it. Take care!
I need some good news right now....
