Portrait of a young chap in uniform. He is dressed in a Naval cadet's uniform from 1846–1856. Painted by John Godwin Williams (c.1793–1863)
A cadet is not yet a midshipman; he is an officer in training and what was known until 1837 as a ‘first class volunteer’. This is a rank below midshipman, recognisable by the white stripes on the collar but without the white patches.
