Long story short -

Fujoshi was an insult meaning “rotten woman.” It was used as a pejorative against women who had an interest in LITERALLY ANYTHING that wasn’t being a housewife. However it was most commonly thrown at girls who read smut - particularly gay smut. Because girls are supposed to be “asexual and pure and lie back and think of England like the other good dames.”

Women instead took the label for themselves and said “yeah I’m rotten so what?” And today gender roles have loosened considerably but Japan still has a long way to go.

So yeah it literally IS about sexism stop injecting western culture where it doesn’t belong.
