I see a lot of nobles out here who think "Well I have a 10,000 square foot castle, surely that's enough space for a knight." WRONG. Knights are WORKING BREEDS, they need to go on regular quests to prove their fealty and come home horribly wounded. I have seen SO MANY adopted knights DESPONDENT because their liege keeps them cooped up in a castle and won't let them go on quests. If you want an armored warrior who will be happy in your castle you need to get a castellan. They're closely related to the knight breed but adapted to the castle environment.

there will never be anything as funny as the mutual disbelief between long form and short form fic writers about each other's style.

short form writers look at people writing 100k+ fics as though this is some sort of talent given as part of a fae bargain, that the commitment required shows some sort of ungodly mental fortitude.

meanwhile long form writers look at people writing 1000 word one shots like god I would cut off my left nipple to be able to say anything concisely. i would love to play with multiple ideas. free me from the shackles of this child I have birthed. i love them but I now must take them to t-ball and doctor's appointments and they're going to destroy everything I own.

I know it’s not July yet, but guys, happy 10 years of “two cakes”. This post on god has been a godsend not only as a writer myself but as a friend of artists and writers who I love to encourage. This was legitimately a game-changer.

you'll get the urge as an artist or a writer to say out loud the things you're worried about "the proportions are off" "kind of out of character" "i'm not good at summaries" "didn't get as much detail as i wanted" "i made a mistake and here's how" and that's the self-conscious part of your brain telling you "it's bad and if you don't tell them you know it's bad then they'll think you're stupid" but you've got to ignore that little voice and pretend you think it's good or else that little voice is going to ruin your life

Some of the best advice I have ever gotten was from a creative writing professor. She said never apologize for your work. Never critic it before someone else does.

Her reasoning was you are the creator. You made your work from nothing and can see all the flaws and seems and holes. But your audience may not see any of it. Maybe they will; maybe they won't. But if you TELL them about the holes and the mistakes and the problems....they will 100% see them. So don't tell them. Don't sabotage yourself just because you think you're not good enough.

Petals of Pride Fest!

Pride month is coming and we are having an activity for it.

Rules

750 Min Word Count, No Max.

WiPs Allowed so long as the first chapter is complete and posted by the deadline.

Can be a prequel or sequel to a pre-existing fic, but must be previously unpublished and can standalone from the main fic.

Main POV Character(s) must be LGTBQIA+ and/or MOGAI.

All pairings allowed, but rare pairs highly encouraged! Platonic relationships and Gen fics are also welcome, though!

Flowers must be included, but do not need to align perfectly with the flower language — those are simply included for prompt and inspiration purposes. Flowers may feature in a meaningful symbolic way, as a gift between characters, or as the catalyst to solving a mystery; whatever the creator feels fits best with their vision!

Trope prompts are optional but encouraged!

While certain characters may be bigoted for the sake of a story, participants cannot promote such beliefs.

No full-on crossovers; but AUs inspired by other media is welcome so long as HP characters are fairly recognisable as themselves.

Art can also be submitted, of course, and should still follow all rules not related to word counts. Fanart should be completed to the artists’ satisfaction.

I like that in Order of the Phoenix, Ron constantly defended Sirius from Hermione’s criticism right alongside Harry and understood what it was like for him to be trapped at Grimmauld Place. Even though Ron himself had never experienced anything like that, he understood — and, more importantly, didn't judge Sirius for it. And, by the way, he also sympathized with him back in Goblet of Fire, when Sirius had to eat rats for Harry’s sake.

Maybe Hermione understood Cho Chang’s psychology, but Ron understood Padfoot.

It’s pretty ironic that in the situation with Sirius, Hermione sides with Mrs. Weasley, considering that Sirius always treated Hermione kindly (including when the newspapers were claiming she had broken Harry’s heart), unlike Molly, who acted pretty low toward her in that same situation.

I like that when the hearing was brought up in Order of the Phoenix (the day before it actually took place), Harry immediately looked at Sirius, wanting him to accompany him to the Ministry (just as his godfather had wanted to do). He was probably thinking, “Mr. Weasley is going to take me there, yeah, that's great, really kind of him, but is Sirius coming too?”

In a moment like that, he turned to his godfather because he needed him, because Sirius always tried, whenever he could, to support Harry and be there for him (just like he was immediately after the graveyard events). Harry needed his comfort. He turned to him, but neither he nor Sirius was allowed that. And then Molly, as always, had to put in her two cents, as if anyone had asked for her opinion.

Honestly, I don't think it would have been that dangerous in this particular case. Sirius, in his dog form, could have accompanied Harry to the telephone booth and then gone straight back to Grimmauld Place. Only the Death Eaters knew he was an Animagus, so the chances of Sirius running into any of them were pretty slim. And it really would have made Harry feel a little better.

literally where in the world are people getting “sirius only cares about his friends / his chosen few and no one else”. this is fanon. there is nothing in canon to indicate this. canon sirius as an adult is nice to molly weasley and comforts her about percy despite their differences. of course, adult sirius is very different from teen sirius, but young sirius as an eleven year old moves over for lily at the sorting despite having just met her (and made fun of her!). and given his breaking away from his family, i think he’s very open to getting to know other people to hear different perspectives, especially muggleborns. sirius cares about people a lot and that is fundamental to his character.
