if you're a man, and you see someone say something to the effect of "men are misogynistic assholes" your reaction should not be "but I'm not a misogynistic asshole" it should be "I will do everything I can to not be a misogynistic asshole."

Instead of treating that statement like a personal attack to deny, you should treat it like a challenge for you to overcome. Instead of denying your complicity in patriarchy, prove your commitment to feminism. Instead of trying to prove that you've done nothing wrong, focus on doing something correct. sometimes i talk about how awful it was to feel trapped by my daily makeup routine and how i couldn’t leave the house without putting on a full face and it played a major role in the misery of my high school experience because i had to spend so much extra time getting ready in the mornings and that followed me into my early 20s as well and it was hell and it was so incredibly liberating to go through the slow and uncomfortable but ultimately essential process of getting my bare face back and having makeup be an optional accessory instead of a mandatory uniform. and the response always tends to be ah yes of course, because of your trans and your masculine. and it’s like aha so close! actually! I think if I ended up being a feminine cis woman I also still would not deserve even a second of that shit! I understand what many girlies are trying to say when they describe trans women as “women you can freely abuse in public” but cis women also very much get abused in public with no recourse. A theoretical sympathizer might exist where there may be less for trans women, but cis women do in fact get abused in public without people stepping in.

Let’s be specific and detailed in our criticisms of transmisogyny. Cisness doesn’t protect you from public abuse but transmisogyny does ensure less general public sympathy. That’s a lot less loaded and nuanced than “trans women experience public abuse that cis women never do because everyone values the safety and wellbeing of cis women.” That’s clearly not true whereas “trans women receive less general public sympathy for the abuse they experience in private and in public” is 100% true.

i'm still a leftist but in my experience women are viewed as expendable in leftist spaces, spoken over, treated as stupid, on a level that is astounding. you can get away with an enormous level of vitriolic hatred for women if you couch it in the right terms
