Abbot is trying to convince people that weâre freezing because the wind turbines froze over.
Thatâs not even half the story.
Since we normally have less demand for power in the winter, some power plants are routinely shut down this time of year, so we had less power available to begin with. And several coal and gas powered plants had or currently have frozen instrumentation.
Our system isnât winterized and we canât borrow power from elsewhere because most of the state is on its own grid. This isnât a green energy failure. Itâs an infrastructure failure.
If you're living in Georgia, early voting has started for the Senate runoff race. Get out there if you can, and make sure your voice is heard. Mitch McConnell needs his power stripped away for the benefit of our country!
who else feels like tumblr is a dying platform and itâs the virtual equivalent of being at the club still when itâs about to close in 15 minutes
thatâs how it felt when i signed up in 2011 and my sorry ass is still here. the clubâs been closed. they locked the doors from the outside now we stuck here forever
The Electoral College method of electing presidents is an archaic relic of buggy-whip times and needs to be put out of its misery. We are now perfectly capable of counting every individual vote ...
There is currently a movement ongoing to render the electoral college obsolete before going through the lengthy process of completely abolishing it. Itâs called the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.
The rare Saturday session in August comes amid a national uproar over mail interference.
Heeeeeey.
If your Senator is Republican, call their line and tell them to pass this.
Because itâs going to get blocked or shot down otherwise.
I live in a very small blue state, and my reps have already made their positions on the USPS clear (they support funding). For this reason, thereâs very little I can do as a state resident. I (and every American) are counting on people in red/purple states to make their opinion of the American people known to the senators who need to hear it.
If you are in a red state or a purple state with republican senators, call them and tell them to pass this bill. PLEASE. I know talking on the phone is horrifically anxiety-inducing, but this is our right to vote safely that weâre talking about. This is about ensuring that every vote is counted, especially for veterans, people with disabilities, people in rural communities, people who are sick or affected by the pandemic. This is about life-saving prescriptions arriving on time. This is about paychecks and the ability to pay rent. During a global pandemic wherein the United States accounts for ~25% of all infections and ~22% of all deaths.
The U.S. Post Office is provisioned as a Federal responsibility in our Constitution. Treating it like a private business is an insult to the values and ideals of our founders, and endangers very basic personal liberties guaranteed by that same Constitution. The U.S. Department of Defense was allotted $721,531,000,000 for the 2020 fiscal yearâand that is for a normal fiscal year. That is nearly 29 times as much as this bill requests for *emergency* funding for the USPS.
The United States Postal Service is not a business. It is a public institution overseen by Congress (and Congress alone) that safeguards the rights and liberties of all American citizens, particularly those who are most vulnerable. If you are represented by a Republican congressperson, call them and remind them that it is their job and their job alone to ensure that the mail arrives on time.
I never foresaw the Post Office standing as one of the last bastions of our electoral process and democratic integrity as a nation, but here we are.
Oh, and for goodness sake,
MAKE A PLAN TO VOTE.
heâs literally rigging the election and next to nothingâs being done about it what the actual fucking living hell
HEâS LITERALLY TARGETING USPS IN BLUE AREAS WHERE HE LOST THE LAST ELECTION
Save the U.S. Postal Service!
I knew it was bad, but wow. Seriously, no centralized postal service means so much more than hiked up prices. It means the mail-in vote is threatened as well. Save the USPS.
Imma go buy some of their merch right now.
TFW you want to save the post office in general as an idea, but your actual physical real-life branch of the post office has not delivered your mail properly in months and treats you like shit when you go in to ask about it.Â
Is there a ticky box for âSave the USPS and stop it being so shitty?â
Absolutely. Itâs the one where we not only stop shitting on them, we give them more funding so they can be less overworked and maybe even change outdated and inefficient systems.
(Though it wonât change anything if your local office people are just assholes, unfortunately.)
Also, itâs not a mistake that the mail is slowing down. Itâs deliberate sabotage.Â
So this isnât a âsave the USPS and make them stop being shitty!â itâs âthe USPS is going downhill and it needs to be saved from that shittinessâ
The US president cites concern over mail-in voting, despite little evidence of widespread fraud.
Yall, I donât want to be alarmist butâŚ. thatâs⌠concerning.Â
Top Republicans, including Mitch McConnell, immediately pushed back on the idea - floated by Trump earlier Thursday - that Election Day be d
Well, and least we got this about of it. Even Ted Cruz had to slam on the damage control brakes.
I just want to clarify- even though McConnell and other republicans have slammed on the âNO NO NO we arenât doing thatâ brakes- we should still be concerned.Â
Between this and Trumpâs refusal to commit to election results, he is deliberately undermining his baseâs trust in the electoral process. By citing âvoter fraudâ as his reason to try to delay the election, now even though the election WILL happen on time, if (when) he loses, he can claim that the election was illegitimate- that it was voter fraud, that he warned us, that he knew it was rigged, that Congress didnât do enough to stop all the ~fraud~ that he knew was there, and he will refuse to step aside peacefully.Â
He has been placing armed mercenaries in major American cities run by democratic mayors, and he is laying the groundwork to claim that the election is illegitimate if (when) he loses.Â
You need to vote, so that both the Electoral College and the Popular vote are against him, and when this asshole finally breaks the tradition of the peaceful transition of power (which is what he is planning), when you need to be willing to protest and fight more than you ever have before.Â
Like, I do not want to be an alarmist here, but we could be looking at like⌠Congress having to send in armed men to remove this man from office, and depending how the Republicans in power and his base handle that, we could be looking at a level of violence in the transition of power that is literally unheard of in the US.  Â
^^^^^^ This.Â
This si why you vote blue even if youâre in a scarlet state with no hope of winning the electoral college.Â
This is why you vote for Biden even if you loathe him with every fiber of your being.Â
This is it.Â
If we are to have any hope of maintaining a fair system and avoiding an all-out dictatorship, the numbers have to be absolutely unambiguous.Â
Go. Vote. Blue.Â
Fuck. Joe. Biden.
Look, YES fuck Joe Biden. And I know that asking people to vote for a shitty option because the other viable option is FAR worse is hardly convincing. I know.Â
But a vote for Joe Biden isnât just a vote against Trump. Itâs also a vote for all the positions that Biden would get to fill, rather than leave Trumpâs people (like Barr and DeVos) in charge.Â
Itâs also a vote for all the judges Biden would appoint (Which is likely at LEAST 1 Supreme Court pick.)
Itâs a vote for all of the 700+ positions that the President appoints and Senate confirms (Not just being generally better than Trumpâs picks, but ACTUALLY GETTING FILLED. Trump still had over 170 unfilled appointments as of this year.)
And honestly, at this point, itâs also a vote that says âYou shouldnât get to undermine our electoral process and threaten the peaceful transition of power and STAY IN POWER.âÂ
Joe Biden is a bad candidate, and I wish we had gotten nearly anyone else. But I do believe that heâs a candidate who like⌠generally respects our political process, who could competently staff an administration, who could be reasoned with and compromised with, and who isnât going to try to crown himself Emperor. Biden probably wonât spend hours a day on Twitter instead of like, reading security briefings. It SUCKS that we have to aim as low as âisnât literally trying to power grab himself a dictatorshipâ but the other option is to forfeit your vote and let the dictator get reelected.
So please, for the love of fuck, can we try to temper our disappointment with pragmatism? We should always vote for the best possible option, even if the best possible option is kinda shitty.Â
The protest is a nightly event. People are upset over the treatment of our Black community, but the protest was down to a few hundred people before the Feds decided to over-react. Now weâre also upset to be having an occupying force attacking citizens for exercising their first Amendment rights. Trump didnât want to hear that Black Lives Matters, now weâre protesting his goons.Â

hereâs an article about the original thread, including a transcription of the tweets & some context (May 28, 2019)
another article that goes more into the issue of water (May 28, 2019) (âThe Havasupai Tribe has, in fact, voiced concerns about groundwater pumping near the Grand Canyon. In 2016, the tribe sued the city of Williams and other well owners, saying the drilling of more wells for resorts, developments, theme parks and uranium mines, among other businesses, increasingly threatens the tribeâs water. [âŚ] Duthie said those sorts of concerns shouldnât hinder Stiloâs proposal for the hotel on Kotzin Ranch because the company wouldnât use a well.â)
as of January 24, 2020, Stilo had submitted a âa revised proposal for roads and utility easements connecting to parcels of land they own that are surrounded by the Kaibab National Forestâ (unanimously approved). opening these roads would require âsome blasting.â as regards the groundwater:
Gitlin also worried that the new proposal did not adequately protect the areaâs groundwater.
The proposal promises that commercial water needs â which during peak season, would be 275,000 gallons a day â would have to be hauled in by truck. It still allows âresidential usesâ to be met by pumping groundwater.
In the proposal, Stilo offered to agree to a âcomplete prohibitionâ on commercial groundwater use, except in the event of âtechnological breakthroughs resulting in proven zero-impact upon groundwater resources.â
It suggested a restrictive covenant or a conservation easement to enforce that restriction, but itâs not clear who would be responsible for that enforcement.
effectively, plans for development are going forward, & previous reassurances that no immediate proposals were being made seem like lies.
itâs worth mentioning in light of some other comments going around that the issue here isnât preserving the untouched pristine beauty of nature or somethingâthis kind of terra nullius-inflected rhetoric in fact relies upon colonialist & genocidal logicâbut rather the responsibilities & livelihoods of the people who belong to the land & stand to be harmed by these proposals.
incidentally, the Havasupai Tribe have a COVID-19 relief fund that you can donate to here, in addition to emailing & calling the people listed above.
