it drives me bonkers the way people don't know how to read classic books in context anymore. i just read a review of the picture of dorian gray that said "it pains me that the homosexual subtext is just that, a subtext, rather than a fully explored part of the narrative." and now i fully want to put my head through a table. first of all, we are so lucky in the 21st century to have an entire category of books that are able to loudly and lovingly declare their queerness that we've become blind to the idea that queerness can exist in a different language than our contemporary mode of communication. second it IS a fully explored part of the narrative! dorian gray IS a textually queer story, even removed from the context of its writing. it's the story of toxic queer relationships and attraction and dangerous scandals and the intertwining of late 19th century "uranianism" and misogyny. second of all, i'm sorry that oscar wilde didn't include 15k words of graphic gay sex with ao3-style tags in his 1890 novel that was literally used to convict him of indecent behaviour. get well soon, i guess...

right now on earth there’s a kindly old stray tomcat who just got adopted and he’s receiving enough food to fill his belly for the first time in his entire life and he’s so so so happy and he doesn’t even know that it’s going to be like this forever :)
This was my choice. Adar, whether by your will or not, there is no ship now that can bear me hence

Hold your ground, hold your ground! Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my brothers! I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of wolves and shattered shields, when the age of men comes crashing down! But it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good Earth, I bid you *stand, Men of the West!*
in the tags will you please tell me your favorite album that came out in 2023??
Viggo Mortenson does not get enough credit for delivering lines like "not idly do the leaves of Lorien fall" with a complete sincerity and gravitas
As Windows 10 end of life approaches, analysts are concerned that millions of devices will be scrapped due to incompatibility
I talked about the problem of Windows system requirements being too damn high before, and how the windows 10 to 11 jump is especially bad. Like the end of Windows 10 is coming october 2025, and it will be a massive problem. And this article gives us some concrete numbers for how many computers that can't update from win10 to 11.
And it's 240 million. damn. “If these were all folded laptops, stacked one on top of another, they would make a pile 600 km taller than the moon.” the tech analysis company quoted in the article explains.
So many functioning computers that will be wasted. And it's all because people don't wanna switch to a Linux distro with sane system requirements and instead buy a new computer.
Like if you own one of these 240 million windows 10 computers, Just be an environmentally responsible non-wasteful person and switch that computer to Linux instead of just scrapping it because Microsoft says it's not good enough.
This is important info, but I REALLY don't think the onus of being wasteful is on individuals—most of whom are not tech-savvy enough (or simply don't have the time or resources) to even figure out what Linux is. Seriously, do you expect your grandparents to switch to Linux?
This waste is NOT the fault of individuals. This is the fault of big corporations like Microsoft for refusing to update or support older devices so they can force people to buy more of their products.
This is planned obsolescence.
This is just like the ableist plastic straws bullshit.
This is just like when a bunch of companies responsible for producing disposal plastics got together to found American the Beautiful, which was responsible for the 1971 'Crying Indian' anti-littering campaign. Guess what it did? Yup, it placed the blame for plastic waste on individuals, rather than the companies that actually produce all that waste.
Please stop guilt-tripping individuals for their miniscule contributions to pollution when the real problem is the corporations forcing us to make these shitty choices.
^this exactly. I cannot stress how much of this waste is going to be from large organizations that NEED to have everyone running the same OS for certain software or specialty hardware.
reblog with a book that you have read this year and would like to suggest 📚📖📗📑📔🍵☕
