i’m ashe! a 22 y/o lesbian who can never ever get her mind off of btvs — it’s my special interest and biggest comfort, so it was about time i made a blog to throw all my thoughts and writings into. here i’ll post hugely about the story and spuffy, but i spend a lot of my life on literary/media analysis in general so expect other medias i adore (twin peaks/fwwm for example) to pop up as well :) whether that be in analysis, ramblings, comparative studies, hcs or even my own written fiction that all expand on my ideas around them.

small disclaimer that i’m a hardcore spuffy ride or die, they are incredibly personal to me but am both totally nuanced and view their story through a lens focused on both queerness, otherness and trauma. i promise you can trust in my intelligence. and if you’re an angel/bangel fan, we may not see eye to eye! i’m pretty disparaging about both his character’s writing throughout the buffy franchise and in the context of buffy hersef/bangel, so don’t feel the need to read my stuff if that’s upsetting to you. thank you!! excited to have fun letting my buffy brainrot finally take over and put more of it all to ‘paper’ ˚ʚ♡ɞ˚

something i find very obnoxious in fiction is when a story presents us with a society of structural misogyny and decides it wants to deal with misogyny within its text but can't commit to exploring the precarity of heterosexual relationships within that system. so you end up with these relationships where these feminist or proto-feminist women end up happily ensconced within the heterosexual marriage and its like fine and they don't have any complicated feelings about it bc their husbands like them and are nice guys. which like. does nothing to counter the insane societal issues faced by these women and also insultingly implies that happiness and self-actualization can only be found for these women within the safe harbor created by a graciously tolerant man. this post is about bridgerton and also jujutsu kaisen fanfic.

James Marsters has said in an interview that, when Joss Whedon let him know that Spike was gonna fall in love with Buffy in season five, he had assumed it would be one-sided - only for Whedon to correct him with a “Oh no, she’s gonna fall in love with you too.”

i’ve read such an obsessive amount of spuffy fanfic over the last couple months and engaged with the actual show comparatively very little to the point where it gives me such a rush to remember they’re canon and not just some really popular non-canon ship. like oh my god they’re actually in love with each other in canon who’s job was it to tell me that?

something ive wanted to discuss for a while is the beatrice x benedick as spuffy and romeo x juliet as bangel statement that i think joss whedon had because it's so fucking accurate. i was reading much ado today and i had two thoughts. 1) wow beatrice is so buffy summers and 2) this is an insane fucked up couple and i want them together so badly.

and if youve read/know much ado obviously benedick and beatrice are toxic. of course they are. it's a 500 year old comedy play and notably, it's a comedy. the joke is they hate each other so much it makes you laugh when they somehow fall in love with each other with the help of mischief. classic shakespeare

but when joss said that spuffy was like benedick and beatrice in a way where it was always more fun to write because there's always more with them. even though they literally admit their feelings to each other in front of the town or whatever, there are still going to be problems, but the fun with them is they are both beautiful and funny assholes who are sort of perfect together arguably.

and the whole bangel discourse as them as romeo and juliet was also so accurate because romeo and juliet are always believed to be some great love story when really it's a political tragedy where two teenagers had to kill themselves to get their families to stop warring, the politics around something as simple as loving another person or even liking another person absolutely drove romeo and juliet into hyperdrive, and a lot of their love was built on how much they couldn't be together. and of course, once they get together... great. yay. it's over. but there’s something so personal and fun about beatrice and benedick even though there's the stuff

If Spike and Buffy got married, what would their last names be? I think Spike would want to be Mr. Buffy Summers.

AHH i’ve actually spent too much of my life thinking about this 😭 in my opinion they would never ever marry in the traditional sense (because they’re too queer and unconventional in the first place. but also, who would they truly want to display their love before? i’d imagine if they did, they’d have just willow, dawn and clem as witnesses or something. everybody else disrespected them or disavowed their connection so hard that i honestly don’t think they deserve to share in their intimacy like that. their love has always been for them alone) but i absolutely could see them having some sort of unconventional ring exchange and devoting themselves to eachother. again, something private and just for them.

‘spike summers’ has always been the loveliest pseudonym for him to me because he feels so much love, pride and loyalty towards not just buffy, but all of the summers women. and i really think it would be like the ultimate honour to him to be named after/alongside them. embraced by people he respects, given a family and sense of community that he never really had.

‘buffy pratt’ isn’t.. terrible, but i think that’s honestly just my love for spike speaking. i just don’t really think it does anything for buffy; i don’t think spike needs to embrace that old part of himself to the point that it needs to be demonstrated in every extension, and after all, william pratt is, unfortunately, long dead. buffy is marrying spike, all the parts of him, not just the sweet but timid man he used to be exclusively. she loves him for all parts of him, the whole point in their story is her embracing her darkness, her monster. anyway, i never believe in a female lead losing her reputable name for the sake of being noticeably attached to their male counterpart, and spike already plays the traditional part of the female role in their dynamic so well. also, ‘william pratt’ always felt like a cruel writing joke in the first place to me, akin to ‘william the bloody’ and ‘spike’ really originating in how he was bullied in life — prat is uk slang for fool, essentially </3.

so i think in still embracing the William parts of himself but accepting his evolved self as Spike, Spike Summers is the ultimate emblem of his evolution and devotion to his forever life as buffy’s lover, seated forever at the right hand of the slayer.
