When I was in the 8th grade my history teacher handed out a map that was supposed to be the borders of The Roman Empire superimposed on the borders of modern Europe. Like, to give us perspective on its size or whatever.

Except for some reason, instead of modern borders, it was layed over a map from before World War One. Like sometime between 1871 and 1914.

Here's an attempt at recreating it:

the source maps are different projections so they don't line up perfectly. It didn't have those gaps. Or that watermark.

Actually, It was a very poor quality print copy so it looked more like this:

When I tried pointing it out to him he just got annoyed and claimed it didn't matter.

I routinely think about this because, like, has my school just been print-copying and print-copying that same map for the past 100 years? The school wasn't built until ww1 was already over, so it wouldntve even been current then. Where did they get this? Why would it exist? Very confusing!
