When I was a doormat I was a normal woman. My behavior struck no one as odd. I froze when men aggressed me and did not know why. I did not think of myself as spineless. I had anger, but was proud of never losing my temper. I had no sense of how small I was, how stunted. The consequences of female socialization are not immediate and can not be bypassed in an emergency. Female socialization exists for the emergency, to make sure you freeze, to make sure you donât run or fight back. It is underpinned by beliefs about yourself, other women, and men so deeply held you canât even recognize that you hold them.
