BIG BUS BOSS — Episode 4
The loumand failmarriage only gets more insane with every reveal I'm actually obsessed with it. Like basically Louis was a kind of shitty boyfriend to Armand (wouldn't commit to being his companion, was still hung up on his ex who he killed and who he was hallucinating the whole time they were dating) and Armand responded to this proportionally by colluding with his coven to have him and his daughter and his daughter's girlfriend publicly executed, and he spent ages making all the fun little projector animations for it and probably had a whole mock trial aesthetic moodboard and everything. And then Louis' ex who ISN'T dead teams up with his ex to get revenge on his other ex who tried to kill him, but he changes his mind halfway through the trial and makes sure Louis survives, and both him and Louis get turbo trauma by seeing their daughter killed horribly in front of them. Then Louis is mad at BOTH of them, because he thinks Lestat is why Claudia got killed, and because he thinks Armand just stood by and let the trial happen, but he can't just be single because he's got turbo grief and also the best revenge on Lestat is fucking Lestat's ex, so they get married and IMMEDIATELY fucking hate each other. Louis never loved Armand as much as he loved Lestat and was mostly only with him out of spite and grief. Armand is trapped in this insane lie that could fall apart at any moment; he chose his coven over Louis but then Louis fucking killed them all so he's stuck with Louis. And of course they're both miserable, and so Louis immediately starts fucking (and killing) other men - nearly 200 by the time he meets Daniel Molloy. And Armand initially takes out his repressed anger about this on Louis' new toy but then it turns out, huh, maybe this toy is actually kind of compelling? So whenever Louis cheats on him he goes and stalks Daniel Molloy for enrichment, and now they're BOTH in love with someone else while still pretending they're in love. And then that beaten up chew toy that keeps fucking up his life and fucking dubious twinks in cars is old and about to die so Louis invites him over to tell him his life's story/kill him finally/turn him?/sabotage his marriage for him, and Armand does sexy servant roleplay, and Louis offers to turn Daniel/have sex with him right in front of Armand who is deeply in love with him, and Armand tries to gaslight him back and puts the Steins in with his photographs. And then it turns out that shitty old man is actually a decent journalist and the marriage unravels and they're both FREE but this is very much not actually good for either of them or for society at large!
Oh and during ALL OF THIS they were fucking like crazy doing extremely not sane and safe BDSM.
changed the trajectory of lives
I love the genre switch between iwtv and tvl, I love seeing how Louis sees the world and how Lestat sees the world and how different they are, how incompatible they seem, and yet how much they love each other. That's what love is like! You love someone, and they have a whole world inside them that you have no access to, and you have to work to bridge that gap, and you'll never entirely manage it, but you keep trying because you love them. Beautiful
It is sooooo diabolical for Armand to stalk Daniel and report back to Louis for 50 years just for Louis to giggle and bat his eyelashes and go “wait but what if we pretend we haven’t seen him since SF and invite him to interview us again while you pretend to be my maid” and Armand goes “sure babe but first let me steam my purple silk top and send the chef his favorite dessert recipe” like yeahhhh they’ve all been alive for too long and have completely lost their minds your honor
Absolutely haunting refrain of “Could be nice. Could be. Hands touch.” In ep7. Lestat clinging to Louis as the only thing that keeps him grounded in the midst of his own unraveling. Lestat believing Louis’ love is enough to redeem him, even as he is surrounded by the evidence of his failures. It’s really the Loustat of it all.
(IWTV/TVL S3 E6 SPOILER) There's something about Louis not witnessing Claudia's death and Lestat being unable to look away while she sings/screams in agony until there's nothing left of her but the dress. And then Claudia's ghost fading away, and Louis looking away, in a pose which is ready to run and Lestat being unable to look away while she screams in agony until there's nothing left of her but the dress.
Assad Zaman: There’s something about Armand when he’s not being observed that I took [from the books]. I think if you know the books you know that he’s… the specific alien quality about… when you’re in stasis, you’re almost on standby. Statuesque. You’re unable to emote or think anything because everything you do is shaped on either being obsessed with someone, manipulating someone, or trying to survive your trauma in someway. What do those people do when they’re not being observed? The way Anne Rice describes Armand, several times, is sort of this ethereal, alien quality that doesn’t quite feel like it’s… She called it childish, but I don’t see it as childish. I see it more as like an alien that’s unable to understand himself, his own needs[?], only able to play a part. So when there’s no one to see them, they kind of just go a little bit dead, soulless, that kind of thing. That’s something that I took on, tried to.
No acting needed
