The Right Time || Jun/Pepa

Summary: After Lo tells Jun that her family will be split apart, Jun realizes he has one last shot to ask Pepa and Felix a very important question...

JUN: 

Jun’s head had been spinning for the past twenty-four hours, ever since Lo told him the news about Cami and Pepa. Both of them gone— in just one week! He had this terrible, sinking feeling it was not for such an innocent reason either. He couldn’t imagine what might break the Madrigal family in two, but as much as he wanted to ask, Jun knew now was certainly not the time.

So what could he do? What could he do? The question multiplied over and over with no real answer in sight until at last Jun woke with a yelp, sitting up in his bed at 3am in the morning as he realized all at once what he must do.

Before it was too late, he must ask Lo to marry him. He had to do it now. This week. Before her family was split, and there was no telling when Lo might see them again.

And so Jun scrambled, frantically finding coverage for the market and then asking Pepa and Felix to meet. It was undoubtedly an odd email from him, but thankfully, Pepa reacted quickly. She had her own loose ends to tie up before she left Swynlake! After confirming, he hustled over to Casita while school was in, so Lo was not around.

By the time he arrived, Jun’s palms had already started sweating. So were his armpits. Good thing he was wearing a cardigan, eh? (This was probably one of the reasons he was sweating, but Jun hated to show his arms.)

“Thank you for seeing me on such short notice!” Jun said as soon as Pepa opened the door and ushered him in. His voice broke embarrassingly on the first word, like he hadn’t used it all day, and he blushed already.

Pepa laughed. Oh — she loved this type of young person, so quick to think, with a Witty Reply on the tip of their tongue. She could see that Reply as it tapdanced through the air. 

He reminded her a bit of Felix, actually. In a good way. And that reminded her of being young. Also in a good way.

“And how long have you two been together?” she asked.

Seeing someone else embrace the rain like he did made him rather happy. It made Reginald feel less alone in the world, which was always a bonus.

“It does!” He told Pepa with a smile on his face. “It’s nice to meet likeminded individuals.” Reginald continued before throwing in a curve ball of a question. “You can tell me to mind my business if you want, but, are you cursed too?”

There was once a time when Pepa thought she might be cursed.

The magic she’d spent her life cultivating had turned on her, bursting out with her emotions.

Now she wasn’t so sure.

“Hmm, not cursed,” she said. “But my magic is… funny. I am a sorceress, but something happened and my magic can be unpredictable. It is not the same as it once was and there was a time it made me scared. But I like it now. Most of the time, at least.”

She tilted her head.

“I take it you do not feel the same way about your own magic?”

Maybe she was right. Edward enjoyed the effort of grand gestures but at the same time...it was those endless smaller memories that he looked back on so fondly. Simply seeing Eilonwy smile sometimes was more than enough to brighten his day. Something he was determined never to lose that appreciation of.

He had seen plenty of couples in town, listened to their experiences, and somehow none of them were exactly the same. It was different for everyone, but Edward took heart in knowing different or not love existed in a million ways.

"I believe so," he agreed, "it takes very little more to brighten mine than her smile." That, of course, was why he was determined to follow her anywhere, even Mona, even knowing how that decision changed his own life so drastically.

The warmth of that light reached him, magic, he realized, and brought another smile to his face as he glanced up. Magic always fascinated him, especially anymore as he was trying to figure out the workings of his own. "Oh, that is lovely," he noted, unable to help his curiosity.

Wasn’t this young man sweet! Pepa smiled brighter and the sunlight around the two of them brightened accordingly.

“Oh? Ah, I am a storm sorceress," she said, with a wink. She wiggled the fingers on her free hand. “But a special one! My mood affects the weather. So when you say something so lovely that makes my heart soar … well, there will be some sunlight even on the cloudiest and rainiest days."

"Evelyn, she's my girlfriends." Not that Flynn couldn't have a dog like her but it usually ended up a question and he only knew so many facts about her.

"I'd personally go for one with more of a coat to stay warm but apparently she's a really good listener."

The little dog did indeed look quite very cold. She daintily sniffed Pepa’s outstretched hand and Pepa made a cooing noise. 

“Aw, it is sweet that you are walking her, then,” said Pepa. “I think animals are a good judge of character. So if she likes you, then that is probably a good sign for your girlfriend.” She laughed a little and winked.

"Oh, this is lunch," Edward was careful to keep the bag tucked out of the way of the storm, "something to brighten my love's day, or at least I hope." He smiled; now that Eilonwy was well past the nausea and such that had lingered a few weeks after Primrose had been born she often asked for the sorts of things she'd had to avoid during the latter part of her pregnancy.

Case in point; the spicy noodles from the Lucky Cat.

"I thought I might surprise her," Edward explained, practically beaming as he talked about her, "she is so awfully busy looking after our daughter while I am away at work she certainly deserves a surprise."

She had help at times when he couldn't be there, of course, but that didn't negate the fact that Edward still took whatever opportunity he could to do little things to remind her that he was always thinking about her when they weren't together.

“Oh! That is so lovely of you,” Pepa gushed. “My husband does the same for me — even on days when he is so much busier. I try to return the favor when I can, of course. I think that is the secret to keeping love alive, no? Remembering the little things, taking any chance you can to brighten the other person’s day.”

As she spoke, a golden glow of sunlight washed over the two of them, almost piercing through the rain. It did not stop the rain, though, but it was enough to brighten up the gloomy sky.
