This isn’t a dni lol, I think those are dumb personally. But here’s my list of people I don’t really like! Serves the same purpose as a dni, gets the same message across at least. I still won’t interact with people if I fall into their dni criteria (unless provoked lol). Also, all the types of people in this list are not disliked at equal rates, and are listed in no particular order.

Homo/transphobes (you hate the fact that I exist? I don’t like you lol)

New Age and Love and Light enthusiasts (fuck your higher vibrations)

Christian evangelicals (the Bible is cool and all, but I know damn well you did not read that shit while keeping in mind how theology, the culture for the area and time period the stories were told/written in, mistranslations, and how fucking analogies work)

Evolution deniers (my ancestors are Tiktaalik and I’ll kill for them)

Flat Earth believers (cool idea though, fun to think about in a fictional setting)

Western tulpamancers, endosystems, system hoppers, and the like (sorry, I don’t hate you guys, but I’m a disordered system and it just rubs me the wrong way personally)

In response to anon's ask on essential oils in candles, NO it is not safe. Essential oils are EXTREMELY flammable.

ALSO do NOT use undiluted essential oils to anoint your spell candles. If you "have" to use an essential oil, dilute it heavily (like 1-2%) with a carrier because that shit will go ablaze and fast.

Safety in Witchcraft

What’s not talked about enough in the spiritual community is mundane safety along with spiritual. Critical thinking is vital. I wanted to share a lot of my personal rules for myself that I have adapted into my craft.

Fire safety, never leave an open flame unattended. Ever. Always burn in an open enough area with a fire safe dish or on ceramic tile away from animals and children. If you leave the room extinguish the flame. Do not sleep with fire going. I know we want to keep that spell going even during a nap but sometimes we don’t wake up in time for danger. This is absolutely vital to keep you safe. It won’t ruin a spell I promise or anger anything. Please do not add those herbs to that candle. I know it’s nice and pretty but that is a fire hazard. Stay safe.

On that note always have an open window or a well ventilated area when burning items. That goes for herbs, incense, or candle. Smoke inhalation can ruin your lungs.

Rodents, reptiles, birds, any animal is sensitive to scents and have small respiratory systems. Be careful using anything around them. Research what can be used around them. I mean research! Cross reference. Use veterinarian hospital guides, not pro essential oil blogs. Please don’t put any essential oils on your pets. They can be seriously harmed.

Moon water actually molds, very easily. So can herbal blends if not stored correctly. Check frequently and use before end of date. Distilled water is your friend to prolongs shelf-life along is storing in a cold dark place.

Witchcraft and magic is not a replacement for medical treatment and medically prescribed medication. It absolutely can aid your treatment but it is never a replacement.

Do not ingest any herbal remedies without consultation with your doctor and/or Herbalist. Especially if you have pre-existing conditions and need to take medications for it. Things can conflict and are deadly.

Also forage responsibly. Unless you are 100% certain what you have foraged is the correct plant. Don’t even chance it. It’s not worth sickness or in worst cases death.

Do NOT ingest essential oils. I don’t care what you have heard from pro essential oil pages. The distillery methods are not safe for ingestion. It can tear up your stomach lining and throat. Cause extreme nausea and vomiting. Seizures and in worst cases death.

Some covens and practitioners are not your friends. Be cautious and use stranger danger. Be cautious and never give out all of your personal information online. There are predatory people everywhere, including in this community. Please be safe. Always use your gut instinct.

First, I'd like to reiterate everything Christo and the tags said above. And I'd like to point out that the very fact that every "holy text" ever written has been created by human hands and human understanding, which are inherently imperfect, so Anon, there's your first citation right there. And if you think for one second that anyone has ever recorded a religious tenet or created a religious law without there being cultural and political reasoning behind it, you are fooling yourself.

Now let's move into the history, shall we?

Let's talk about biblical canon. The Catholic Church has, over the course of many hundreds of years and dozens of synods an ecumenical councils (beginning in 382 CE with the Council of Rome), continuously revised and adapted the content of the Holy Bible. During this time, there was prolonged debate about what material to include or exclude, how to define the nature of God (and by extension Jesus and the Holy Spirit), and what exactly constituted orthodoxy. Quite a number of factions broke off and formed sub-orders within the Church, some of which were reabsorbed. Others were excommunicated or prohibited from teaching.

The fact that there have been so many schisms in the Church over the course of its' existence indicate two things: first, that even the highest-placed and most-educated religious scholars cannot agree on everything in Biblical canon or canon law; and second, that both Biblical canon and canon law have CHANGED over time in response to the changing needs of the Church and its' congregants.

The Bible as we first see it in history comes from a Greek translation of an old Hebrew text called the Septuagint, with the New Testament (letters from the apostles and so forth) being added later. Translation of a text often means words are changed to fit the translator's understanding of a certain passage, and they may not directly reflect the original meaning. This is a pattern we see repeated as Biblical canon evolved and as the text was translated into Latin and later English. And over that time, scholars and monarchs continually argued about what various passages meant, often contradicting each other while using certain verses or chapters as justification for their position or their actions.

And SPEAKING of English translations of the Bible, let's talk about good old King James. Because that man is a PERFECT example of how the Bible was changed to fit the views and goals of a king. James, son of Mary Queen of Scots, grew up terrified of Catholics, women, and witches. All his life, he was told by advisors that Catholics were plotting to seize his throne, that his mother was an evil scheming shrew, and that because he was ordained by God, the Devil had sent witches to cast spells against him.

The King James Bible contains an oft-cited verse, "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live." (Exodus 22:18) It's not the only reference to witches in the Bible, but it's certainly the most well-known. And it's present because of a deliberate change made by James.

The original context of the passage states, "You shall not suffer a poisoner / one who creates poison to live among you." (The Latin text uses the term maleficos, but in the Greek translation of the Septaugint, the word pharmakeia is used, being the Greek word for both one who makes herbal medicine and one who makes and sells poisons. The original Hebrew term MIGHT mean something like "witch," but scholars are divided on this point.) But since King James was obsessed with witches, he changed the wording on this verse and several others to bolster his agenda to eradicate suspected witches. And this rhetoric DID go on to influence policy and public thought and cost many innocent people their lives.

And let's go even further forward to the 20th century, when conservatives began to point to the verse, "Thou shalt not lie with man as with woman, it is an abomination. (Leviticus 18:22)" as justification for their hatred of the LGBTQ community. HOWEVER. Previous and more direct translations of the verse in context indicate a prohibition against incest and sexual assault, not consensual same-sex relationships. But since the bigots needed holy justification for their behavior, they conveniently ignored this and have been for some time. It's the same reasoning used to pre-emptively pardon the sin of murder for the knights of the Crusades.

So to conclude, Anon, fuck you and your demand for CREDIBLE sources. Crack open a history book sometime, you useless week-old breadstick. Holy texts and religious rhetoric have ALWAYS been used to justify the actions of rulers, ever since there were texts and rhetoric to cite. In many cases, that was the entire point of having them in the first place.

If you don't understand that scripture written by human hands will always have inherently human fallibility and that the ruling class will always use the excuse of Divine Right to prop up unjust actions, there's just no hope for you.

No, "shamanism" is not found within many cultural practices. The word "shaman" was appropriated from Tungusic spiritual practices and applied to a number of unrelated practices with superficial resemblances to each other instead of just using the local word for whatever said practice was called.

To add to this: the term was appropriated by anthropological studies at large in a era where taking words from other cultures was fairly common. If you see the word used in an academic setting or text, yes, it is incorrectly used there as well, and is used to flatten and generalize unique cultural practices. You may run into the word in scholarly articles or texts, and it will still be wrong.

So what word should be used then? Is there a good generic word for similar practices? (This is a genuine question, if it sounds brusque it's because I'm sick sorry)

There will be similar qualities in many religions, but the first mistake would be to take superficial qualities from other culturally specific religions and assuming that they can therefore all be defined under one word. There is no such thing as a cross cultural form of shamanism under any name for the same reason you couldn't call a catholic priest a shaman for communing with spirits like angels and saints and eating the blood and body of a god-deity. Spirit? Whatever Jesus is.

Every religion is its own. They will have their own words, probably in their own language. The fallacy is in trying to associate multiple indigenous religious practices with another.

What would it take to be a starseed or new ager without being problematic?

Since I've seen people claim that it's possible to be a starseed or new ager without believing in the bad stuff, I've decided to write a list of some of the stuff they'd have to give up on in order for their spirituality to not be crawling with racism, colonialism, and genocide:

Literally all of the conspiracy stuff. All that stuff can be traced back to The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion (a known hoax), early modern witch panic and blood libel, and other sundry forms of antisemitism. Literally anything connected to the reptilian conspiracy theory has got to go.

Atlantis. It was literally a fictional city and pretty much all Atlantis belief is tied in with the above conspiracism.

All of the ancient aliens stuff. All of the so-called evidence is fabrication, hoax, or wishful thinking. The whole entire thing is rooted in white supremacy, even if people try to gloss over it today.

The whole entire missionary attitude; IE, the belief that people need to "wake up to the truth" or whatever. Missionary work is a tool of colonialism. The end whole goal of eliminating all other forms of spirituality is cultural genocide, plain and simple.

The whole Perennialism thing, with the belief that every spiritual tradition is derived from some pure, untainted ur-religion that the world must return to, which just so happens to be the form of spirituality you believe in.

The whole Millennialism thing, with the belief that the world is on the cusp of entering a new age where everyone will be a New Ager and no other forms of spirituality will exist.

The belief that humanity is evolving into a "higher" form. (This is literally Victorian age pseudoscience.)

Claiming that symptoms associated with autism, ADHD, and trauma in general are actually signs of being a starseed, thus dehumanizing the neurodivergent.

The belief that past lives or lost memories can be accurately remembered through recovered memory therapy. (Not only is this bunk, it fuels pseudohistory and conspiracy theories.)

Anything that can be traced back to books with obvious Nazi sympathies, like Other Tongues - Other Flesh, and the alleged diary of Admiral Byrd. (The latter of which is an obvious forgery if you use any critical thinking skills whatsoever while reading it - nobody writes in their journal while literally controlling a plane.)

Anything that can be traced back to Helena Blavatsky, William Walker Atkinson, and other people known for just pulling shit out of their asses and claiming it came from a reliable source.

This isn't even all of the stuff that would have to go, but it's some of the biggest stuff that would have to go, and I'm pretty sure that if you ejected all of this, you wouldn't have much of anything left.

For starseeds specifically, cutting these beliefs out would cut out most (if not all) of the starseed movement’s core beliefs. Which is kinda scary to think about tbh because it really tells you a lot. As in, everything that fuels the starseed belief system is based on racism, colonialism, antisemitism, ableism, and then some.

They can preach “Love and Light” all they want, but it’s really telling when a person still follows this movement when they know of it’s ties and history.

genuinely tired of meditation being approached as the be-all-end-all aid for getting into magical or spiritual work. i don't know how to explain to you that some people can't do that. i can't do that. i have adhd, ptsd and did (with memory holders and persecutors) - all of which get thrown into overdrive when i meditate, making me become extremely stressed in a very short amount of time. i also have joint pain and a pretty damn severe neck injury from birth and i can't. i cannot. sit still (or lie down, or stand up, or whatever) for any longer than a few minutes unless i am sleeping.

stop telling me i have to meditate to achieve whatever it is you're trying to sell me.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but just because you’re having trouble with your tarot readings doesn’t mean you need to cleanse your deck.

I treat my decks like cast iron, the more you use them the more they are seasoned and the better they work. Cleansing your deck strips away that magical seasoning and you’re starting from square one.

There is a time and place for cleansing, but it’s not every month. The last actual cleanse I did on a deck was 3-4 years ago, and the problem came right back (my rider Waite is sassy and likes to only give reversals, I’ve learned to just live with it). Cleansing is my last resort and I think too many people jump to it when there are a lot of other ways to troubleshoot.

Magical sterility bothers me, let some funk in.

Presidents are manipulated puppets of the conspiracy.

The conspiracy manipulates anyone with a high political position.

The conspiracy grooms world leaders.

Agents of the conspiracy are planted everywhere, in all levels of society.

The conspiracy kills anyone who might expose their plans in ways that no one would suspect are actually murder.

The conspiracy follows/uses the Kabbalah.

Literally all of these were claimed in The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion, an antisemitic hoax created by the Okhrana. It was used by Nazi Germany to justify the Holocaust, and today it still serves as the blueprint for most conspiracy theories - even if modern conspiracy theorists try to hide it, downplay it, or rationalize it with another, equally absurd conspiracy theory.
