“We can’t change the world for animals without changing our ideas about animals. We have to move from the idea that animals are things, tools, machines, commodities, resources here for our use, to the idea that as sentient beings they have their own inherent value and dignity.”
-Andrew Linzey
People who think that the mass industrial-scale animal agriculture industries today are part of “the circle of life” the “food chain” or anything close to “natural” need to fucking check themselves. Maybe go outside and use your own hands to kill who it is you want to eat and a lot fewer of you will be consuming sentient beings. A styrofoam tray of sanitized bird organs or wrapped cow discs is the farthest you could get while declaring eating meat is holistically part of the natural order of things.
Y’all aren’t eating bacon or ice cream in solidarity with planet earth - on the contrary, you financially supporting these things are what is destroying the natural world, and trillions of feeling beings along with it every year. Everyone matters and every choice is a drop in the bucket of what depth we are going to to protect or bring ruin to. Put your money / consumer habits where your morals are.
Nobody has to be a 100% purist in what they consume, but we all have the obligation to do everything that is practical and possible to mitigate harm in every way we can in our own lives. No excuses for not doing your best - you know what that is.
everybody like: woooo vegans suck because they’re always pushing their message
Like yes, that’s why they are vegan too, it’s because they really want people to stop torturing and murdering animals.
“Recognizing that animals have emotions is important because animals’ feelings matter. Animals are sentient beings who experience the ups and downs of daily life, and we must respect this when we interact with them. Animals are not only the companions we live with, care for, and love, they are also the billions of other domesticated animals who live on farms and in slaughterhouses and provide us with food and clothing. And wild animals are continually faced with trying to share our ever-crowded world. Our relationship with other animals is a complex, ambiguous, challenging and frustrating affair, and we must continually reassess how we should interact with our nonhuman kin. Part of this reassessment involves asking difficult questions, and making sure our actions match our understandings and beliefs. Thus, I often ask researchers who conduct invasive work with animals or people who work in factory farms: “Would you do that to your dog?” Some are startled to hear this question, but it’s a very important one to ask. If someone won’t do something to their dog that they do daily to other dogs or to mice, rats, cats, monkeys, pigs, cows, elephants or chimpanzees, we need to ask ourselves why. Emotions are the gifts of our ancestors. We have them, and so do other animals. We must never forget this.”

Brazil is suffering from the worst COVID outbreak there is, and no one is talking about it. This is not just in terms of the number of cases, but also the government’s active refusal to do anything and in fact hurting attempts to help. 1 in every 4 COVID deaths in the world is in Brazil. There isn’t enough access to vaccines. Food is unaffordable, let alone masks. People are actually starving to death. Hospitals don’t have enough beds or oxygen. And if this is not enough of a reason to talk about it, the variant that is sweeping through Brazil is twice as contagious, and has also been seen to infect people who have already been infected with other variations of the virus. The variant has crossed borders already.
These Twitter threads give all the details that i know. Please go through this and share widely.
The second twitter thread provides details of how to donate. Here is a link. It is in Portugese, but google translate is working fine here and also, the author of the thread will translate to guide donation if contacted.
Please share with as many people as possible. The people of Brazil need international support.
You know what’s the fun part? We recently (March 23rd) peaked at 3251 deaths in a day, breaking the 3k record, and projecting for counting up. And this? It’s happening off season for respiratory viruses. It has barely just started, autumn got here just 5 days ago. So you look at how deaths peaked in the US during cold month in season, and how we here are starting to reach these numbers in the very tail end of summer. This is only the beginning of an even bigger massacre than what happened until now, with the new strains spreading. And here we are, one year into a public health calamity and systemic political neglect and cruelty. We are on our fourth health minister in the pandemic btw. 🤪🤪🤪
Our president has said that the mistake of our military dictatorship was torturing and not killing. Here’s an attempt at explaining just how much he wants Brazilians dead:
He took funding away from our Public Health Care System, pushed for the flexibilization of work laws, dismantled a program of mass contracting of Cuban doctors, defamed our Public Universities which account for a large portion if the country’s scientific research, mocked safety precautions, refused vaccine deals, demeaned Chinese vaccines and called them va-China, advocated for medication that hasn’t been proved to be useful, said vaccines turn people into alligators, and fought (and fights) everyone who tries to help: from elected Governors to Health Ministers HE APPOINTED
We’re beating 3k deaths on the daily. States are barely below maximum capacity of covid hospitals, this has potential to get much worse. One state almost suffocated, doctors were saying the oxygen stock wouldn’t last the night
Back when we reached 10k deaths his followers danced thriller around a fake casket
On the subject of caskets, some places almost ran out of them and there were fakenews about empty caskets
He created a situation in which the poor will go hungry if they don’t work then said to open the country because the people want to work
A rich guy said to a mayor “I have money to buy two hospitals, but there’s no bed for my mother”
We’re re-opening schools
Rebblogging again. The graph above, if it’s not glitching on me again, is of testing. Since July of 2020, the HIGHEST 7-day average of tests was 92k. As of now we have 392k covid deaths and since the monetary relief (of R$600, ~U$110, which made extrem poverty fall to its lowest in 44 years) was cut by more than a half and the number of benefiting people was reduced, people are falling under the line of poverty and more than half are estimated to be now experiencing food insecurity.
Which, like the number of cases, is data the gov wants to hide. The organization responsible for our census recieved several cuts in budget, eventually falling from R$2.3bi, to R$53mi (so about 2.3% of the original). This is theorized to be, aside from typical, because 2022 is an electoral year.
By the way:
Several research centers have reported that drug trafficking and militias groups have been enforcing social distancing measures and providing financial aid in some areas to increase their support and, therefore, their legitimacy
So, yeah. Any donation protects a family from catching covid, starving, and/or being indebted to organized crime. And probably some other stuff.

So, India is dying.
Look, I know a good number of you are from the US and things aren't amazing there either, but my country is literally on the brink of collapse. So I'd love it if we could talk about that for a minute.
If you can't do anything else, please just read and reblog.
To put things in perspective,
1 USD = 75.22 Indian rupees
1 euro = 90.99 Indian rupees
1 pound = 104.40 Indian rupees
Even a small amount of 5 or 7 or 10 of foreign currency will help a lot. Our government has essentially abandoned us. People have turned to social media for help. WhatsApp groups and DMs on twitter/insta is where we find help. Our helpline is a Google doc. Situation is so dire that hospitals are discharging patients due to lack of oxygen. Every night the same story, oxygen running out in hospitals, citizens running around to somehow arrange for oxygen with minutes to spare. Last night, we had manged to get oxygen to a hospital with 14min to spare.
Please, PLEASE help. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

Reblogging with more links. Listen to @groundzero-and-deku ☝️ they know what they're talking about.
Some of you in the US have asked what else you can do. I'm not the best person to answer this since I'm not from there, but I do know that Biden is being urged to ship supplies to India. Maybe a more informed person can chime in with how best you can help but calling your representative and registering your concern sounds like a good starting point.
From one democracy to another, thank you. Please keep this going, you're all amazing.
Reblogging one more time
EDIT: Reblogging with some more donation links from @spacegirlstuff Here and Here
Y'all, this is a good time to mention that I am not affiliated with any charity or donation centre, and am not receiving donations on behalf of anyone. This is a list of resources compiled by me and more importantly, other people who have a better grasp on the situation than myself. They are to the best of our knowledge great resources but I still encourage you to do your research and put your money where you believe it will be used best. If you find more ways to help or donate, add them in a reblog - let's get as much information out there as possible. Much love and please stay safe

IM SEEING HINTS OF BULLSHIT IN THE NOTES ABOUT HOW WE HAVE LOW DEATHS PER MILLION.
Honey, sweetie, you absolute moron, we have one of the LARGEST POPULATIONS on Earth.
Even 2% of the infected dying, is a huge fucking number but that's not even what the main issue we're bringing up here.
THE MEDICAL INFRASTRUCTURE IS OVERBURDENED. THE SHEER NUMBER OF CASES THAT REQUIRE HOSPITALISATIONS ARE DRIVING OUR HEALTHCARE SYSTEM INTO THE GROUND.
COVID IS AN ACUTE DISEASE. THE SYSTEM HASN'T HAD TIME TO EXPAND AND ENCOMPASS THE MAGNITUDE OF CASES. NOT FOR THE FIRST WAVE. DEFINITELY NOT FOR THE SECOND.
Think critically. Do your research. Find out how you can help. Get of this post if you're just going to derail it. There are people dying as much from poor governance as they are from lack of supplies and covid-19.

if you would like to help, check out this publicly sourced document that is collating and constantly updating mutual aid fundraisers. please please amplify and donate to even any one of these causes!! especially people outside of india: your money matters! as of 24th april, 2021, 1 USD = 75 Indian rupees, 1 euro = 90 INR so your money is extremely valuable and it will save lives!
“The way we see the world shapes the way we treat it. If a mountain is a deity, not a pile of ore; if a river is one of the veins of the land, not potential irrigation water; if a forest is a sacred grove, not timber; if other species are our biological kin, not resources; or if the planet is our mother, not an opportunity - then we will treat each one with greater respect. That is the challenge, to look at the world from a different perspective.”
— David Suzuki
Anyone who says they’ve never held bigoted beliefs is 100% a liar. We get older and we learn better and we grow more understanding of the world around us. Social justice is not a contest of perfection. It’s a process of growth. That has been completely lost on this community in the past two years.
This needs to be reblogged on here daily.
If vegans are so concerned about whether the animals raised for meat are in pain, why can’t they just buy halal or kosher meat? Like the POINT is that the animals are slaughtered in a way that causes them the least amount of pain. Honestly it reeks of antisemitism and islamophobia.
Jewish vegan here.
Here is everything wrong with what you have said:
1. You clearly don’t know what kosher is. Kosher meat is not “blessed”. Kosher refers to what species of animal it is, how it is slaughtered, and how the meat is prepared.
2. You also don’t understand veganism. Veganism is about animal exploitation and all the cruelty that goes into animal agriculture as a whole.
Vegans aren’t just concerned about whether the animal is in pain when murdered.
Most kosher keeping Jews will eat things certified kosher, which includes companies like Cadbury’s that are incredibly cruel to their dairy cows. In addition the male cows are still murdered for meat (in a none kosher way) in the same dairy cow litter so that is being supported as well.
4. Veganism and kashrut (kosher-ness) align perfectly. In fact, over 70 rabbis (people educated in Jewish law) have urged Jews to go vegan for the reasons of animal welfare, which Jewish law commands, that animal agriculture today does not keep.
Although halacha and mitzvot (Jewish law and commandments) includes a lot about animal welfare when Jews are the ones taking care of the animals, it doesn’t affect whether or not the animal is kosher once killed.
5. Jews do not believe animals were created for food. Until the flood with Noah, animals were not allowed to be eaten.
Also, animals were created before humans. This shows they were not put on this earth for humans.
Tl;Dr all these show, don’t fucking use Jewish culture and law, which you clearly know nothing about, as a straw man against veganism, which, again, you clearly know nothing about.
Kosher meat is all about the slaughter method and what happens afterwards. It has nothing to do with an animal’s quality of life or how much they suffered before slaughter. Leave Judaism out of your anti-vegan bullshit. That reeks of antisemitism to me.
The idea that objecting to the exploitation of animals = antisemism and islamophobia, has to be one of the most ridiculous, no-nuance Tumblr.com takes I’ve ever read.
You know what annoys me the most, people talk so highly about morals and ethics but when it actually comes to implementing it people come up with the most absurd excuses they could possibly find.
No but moralizing about how you don’t deserve the vaccine yet is greatly reducing vaccination numbers it’s not your job to worry about if you’re “stealing” a vaccine from someone else there is a National supply and when it’s your turn it’s your turn. Refusing to get vaccinated is not going to magically vaccinate a bed bound rural person. It’s just going to get vaccine doses thrown in the garbage. God.
Every vaccine dose ups our herd immunity. Every vaccine dose potentially frees up treatment for other people who might need it. Get the vaccine! There’s no “selfish” reason to protect yourself and everyone else from a deadly virus.
Reblogging because pretty much everyone I know under 50 with a preexisting condition who’s been offered a vaccine has spent ages wringing their hands over whether to refuse “until later”, so it can go to someone who “needs it more”. AND I’M INCLUDING MYSELF. After weeks of telling people to just get the vaccine when it’s offered, I had that exact same knee-jerk reaction when my appointment came up! (I did ultimately go to that appointment and get vaccinated, of course.) It’s a very common response, but we need to remember that passing up a dose wastes it; it doesn’t free it up for another person.
If you’re being offered the vaccine it’s because you need it.
Whether it’s because you need it because your age is a risk factor, or your health conditions and/or illnesses are a risk factor, or because you work with people who are at risk, or because its finally come round to you.
If you’re at risk and you don’t take it, there’s a higher chance of you contracting it and contracting it badly and not only is that bad for you (and your loved ones) it’s bad for the hospitals because it overwhelms them. It impacts them helping others. If you take the vaccine you’re helping ease that.
honestly...it’s ok to just use your skills on yourself! sewing clothes only you to wear, making art to hang up in your own personal area, singing and recording songs for you only to listen to...like not everything has to be for other people’s consumption!
6 things i stopped buying: minimalism journey (+ reduce waste)
1. Makeup Remover Wipes: instead, use a washcloth (preferably black) and apply coconut oil or almond oil to the cloth (or face), then use the cloth to wipe your entire makeup off until satisfied. *(continue with face wash routine or face mask)

2. Plastic Toothbrushes: instead, buy a pack of bamboo toothbrushes on amazon or a general store. use these brushes as you would any other brush and thoroughly brush to improve oral health.
benefits: organic // reusable // decomposable // cleanses teeth effectively // eco-friendly // BPA free bristles
3. Multi-Step Facial Cleansers & Name Brand Body Washes: instead, use African Black soap for both your body and face with your preferred method of washing (electronic brush, hands, or wash cloth). for more simple face washes, consider using vegan and/or organic facial washes that work for your skin type.
benefits: multipurpose // improves overall skin health // all skin types (especially acne prone or oily) // single-step process // organic // save money
4. Plastic Water Bottles: instead, use a simple stainless steel bottle that you can refill throughout the day and keep up with.
benefits: reusable // washable // aesthetic // easy to monitor and handle // eco-friendly
5. Face Moisturizers: instead, use carrier oils (such as coconut oil, argan oil, almond oil, castor oil) that work with your skin type/skin needs *(you can try combining them with essential oils such as tea tree oil, lavender oil, etc.)

6. Animal Cruelty Makeup: instead, buy makeup products that you truly need (wear daily) from companies that are Animal-Cruelty FREE and/or vegan. do your research and spend your money wisely. some may seem expensive, but consider how much some high-end brands benefit from not being animal-cruelty free *(invest in vegan and/or organic products too).
benefits: eco-friendly // animal-cruelty free // healthier for skin // long-term benefits // *vegan and/or organic
