Don’t worry guys, fish don’t feel pain! When they’re harmed they only experience an unpleasant stimulus that they do their best to avoid any means necessary! It’s just a stimulus picked up by the nerves that’s sent to the spinal cord and the brain, it doesn’t count!
Here’s dril’s candles on a graph for reference.
It’s easy to look at these and assume “well, high crime cities need more police,” but i think that’s putting the cart before the horse.
Police make crime worse.
Police take fiscal oxygen out of the room, away from actual social support programs. The money spent on policing could go to housing, nutritional services, healthcare, civil rights, building inspections, labor rights enforcement, street maintenance, public transportation. But it goes to paying guys to sit around idling Ford Explorers all day and hitting poor people with sticks.
Crime follows poverty in absolutely every single case. Every single “high crime city” is because of the fucking poverty.
Lemme rant about Baltimore a little bit.
I live here. Our infrastructure fucking sucks. The roads are falling apart, which makes driving nearly unbearable for me as a person with a semi-dislocated spine. Our schools don’t have heat or A/C, so schools are closed if the temperature is too high or low, even though our kids aren’t learning enough as is. We have a huge homelessness problem, because houses are unaffordable and we don’t have enough shelters.
Baltimore Police are dogshit. They do not help. I have so many horror stories about the Baltimore Police but I’ll let the Department of Justice tell it: Investigation of the Baltimore City Police Department.
Every year we beg the city to devote more funds to our schools and our roads and our pipes and our unhoused people, and to lower the police funding.
Thankfully, Mayor Scott has done a lot to help kids and get jobs for people without houses. He’s really trying. Governor Moore has also helped. It’s much, much better than it was, and I’m grateful for that.
But damn, it would be so much better if we could repurpose the entire police budget. Obviously, that can’t happen, but I do wish they’d sell the tanks and riot gear and all the expensive doodads they don’t need.
“Nor can we attempt to make connections by ripping experience from its history, for instance by claiming that it is a “Holocaust of animals;” this does harm to Holocaust survivors. We must locate our ethic for animals so that it does not hurt people who are oppressed.”

An important note on animal activism and why to avoid comparisons like this.
I find it funny when people are like “but if you’re vegan what do you eat?” because after you’ve done it for a few years it’s literally like “how the heck can you put meat in that many things??? why the hell does this have milk in it??? why would you put an egg in that??? WHAT???”
Discussing vegan food with non-vegans: Honestly, plant-based food is incredibly varied and flavourful! You can make pasta dishes, curries, there’s a lot of traditional international cuisine that you don’t need to modify at all! Learning to cook with legumes, whole grains, and vegetables can be incredibly rewarding, or you can make really good vegan junk food too. Wait, I’ll give you some links to my favourite recipe blogs, and here’re some restaurants around town that have very good vegan options–
Discussing vegan food with other vegans: okay but low-key a raw block of tofu with soy sauce, chilli flakes, and spring onion is peak dinner though

"You're anthropomorphising animals."
Or maybe I'm zoomorphising humans. Maybe I don't think animals are like us - maybe I think we are like animals.
We fight for our lives as they do. We enjoy the sunshine or the softness of freshly fallen snow. We know friendship. We feel pain. We grief. We dream. We are curious creatures.
Maybe I just don't think we're special.
Or that we all are.
Yeah, I think that might be it.

"People from [insert country] are all inherently bad" NO. WRONG. VERY LOUD INCORRECT BUZZER FOLLOWED BY FLASHING LIGHTS AND AN AUTOMATED RECORDING OVER THE PA SYSTEM WHICH JUST SAYS "XENOPHOBIA IS A VIOLENT AND DEHUMANIZING TRAP THAT SOWS PARANOIA, DISTRUST, AND HATE AND COMPLETELY DESTROYS COMMUNITIES AND LIVES" OVER AND OVER
I am so tired of people who care more about looking moral and ethical than actually being moral and ethical. They parrot all of the right buzzwords, but don't really care about taking the time to truly understand or engage with what they mean.
Perception is everything. As long as they appear morally pure to the correct crowd, that is truly all that matters.
Grow a spine, you cowards.
if you want to see beautiful and positive vegan art i cannot reccomend the "Lebenshöfe" series by Hartmut Kiewert enough. he just paints animals on farm sanctuaroies, living their peaceful lives <3
it's never too late to go vegan btw :)
