the us treats workers like shit but one of the dumbest things is even for companies that ‘generously’ allow paid sick time you mostly can’t use it until you’ve been employed for 90 days like oh let me just tell my body to simply not get sick for these three months

It goes even further when you consider restrictions placed on sick days. At my last job you could accrue sick time but only ever had 3 unexcused days a month. So if you have a cold or flue that keeps you out more than 3 days in a quarter you must get a doctors note. I used to make so many doctors appts just to get a note for work because I used the sick time I had earned but it was more than 3 days in a quarter.

Then it got really vicious when it became a rolling quarter. So basically instead of 4 set time periods of 3 months where your unexcused went back to 0, it became you had to clear 3 months since your last sick day to get 3 unexcused again. As I became sicker from multiple chronic illnesses I had not had diagnosed yet, I ended up going on FMLA to get 12 weeks of excused sick time but it wasnt paid. And when my accrued sick time was out, it ate through my personal days (3 days a year to call out without a reason) and vacation days.

They also stopped allowing people to use vacation days without 3 day notice so you needed special permission to use them as immediate sick time. (This affected me more when I didn’t have fmla) which btw, the more FMLA time you use, the less you can apply for when it runs out. They penalize you for using it and it still needing to use it. And to top it all off, of you don’t go to work without procuring a doctors note or using allotted time accrued, despite calling out genuinely sick, that’s when they could penalize you. I forgot to procure a note once and got suspended for it.

Meanwhile I tried to let my job permanently drop my hours but they said my position had to be full time because they said so. I fought to be able to work at home because the majority of my work was approving online applications but they refused to set a precedent, and I had no choice but to resign and go on disability.

At every turn the disability rules supposed to help me only fucked me even further. And this was supposed to be one of those cushy office jobs with all the perks. The sicker I got it didn’t feel much different from when I worked at a sub shop and my boss wouldn’t let me sit down to take orders, which was the only way to relieve the pain from a grapefruit sized cyst in my ovary. When I finally got insurance to have it removed a year later, my new job at a call center admonished me for taking an extra recovery day from surgery.

The ADA has done a lot for disability especially at the work place, but we need to do better. It’s not being enforced fully and we need updated guidelines for a modern world. As it is now, the sick policies in America are strictly designed to only allow a healthy person with a cold take a few days off and then bullshit the rest of their unexcused sick days on a hangover. It is not designed to help disabled people, not even the FMLA which was supposedly designed to help disabled people, family members and new mothers. We can do so much better.
