Prewriting, Part 1: How to Keep from Stalling Out on your First Draft (Or: how to just get to the end of this fucking story)

I’ve been thinking a bit about all the posts I see going around like ‘I can come up with a few sentences but never a story’ or ‘I get aesthetic ideas for things but no plot’ or ‘I have characters but that’s it’ and… Seeing people get down on themselves for it or saying they can’t get better or can’t make stories out of these things is kind rough to read.

Thing is? You have the core of a story, you have an idea, you have the seed of something that resonates with you and makes you excited. That’s the perfect start! But to make it into a story, to communicate this clever idea, this emotion sitting in your chest, to bring this bit of something you love to other people? That is, in a lot of ways, what people are wired to do.

There’s a lot of writing advice out there, but I’m gonna throw mine on the pile anyway. Very little of the writing advice I’ve seen focuses on prewriting, and having a ‘bank’ of information and events to draw on has made a huge difference in how likely I am to finish a project–and it’s taken me years to figure out how to build that up and structure it in a way that’s useful. You, dear reader, get to cheat and use my notes.

So you have your idea–A character or characters, a place, or just a mood/aesthetic/snippet of dialog. And for our purposes, a story is just Who, Where, and What: an event involving a character, in a place.
