the damage of microaggressions
Dictionary.com defines microaggression as: a subtle but offensive comment or action directed at a minority or other nondominant group that is often unintentional or unconsciously reinforces a stereotype.
The real damage from microaggression stems from how easily microagressive comments are dismissed as “you’re being too sensitive” or “it was just a joke.” It’s a way to be bigoted and essentially get away with it.
Some common examples of microaggression are phrases such as “she’s so pretty for a trans woman,” or even more subtly, “wow she’s so pretty I couldn’t even tell she was trans!” Such a statement implies that trans women are not beautiful, or that they aspire to be attractive as passing women, or that trans women will never be able to attain the levels of beauty cis women have innately.
Another example of microaggression is “I don’t think you’re really queer because you’ve only been in a het relationships” or “You’re not really trans because you dress cis all the time.” These two phrases are harmful because they further invalidate identities that are already socially unacceptable. Let me take a moment to personally dissect the first statement. “Het passing” relationships are those that at first glance can easily be misinterpreted as two cis het people (cis man and cis woman). A bi women and a pan man can have a “het passing” relationship, but the relationship itself is not a het relationship. Two agender people, male and female, can have a “het passing” relationship but neither party is cis. As somebody who’s identified as queer since middle school and as trans since sophomore year, I’ve never been in a het relationship, though they have been het passing. With a het passing relationship comes equal amounts of privilege (not facing the same violence and public bigotry as non-het passing relationships) and erasure (being invalided because the relationship doesn’t look queer). When it comes to invalidation trans people because of their gender expression, what’s essential to remember is that gender expression is not always a reflection of gender identity.
So how, as members of the LGBTQ+ community or as allies, what can you do? Speak up. Say “hey, maybe you didn’t mean for it to come out like this but that’s kinda ignorant” or “you shouldn’t say things like that.”
