Biden’s speech outlining his 1.4T relief bill includes some dumb things. But.

It includes a federal increase to a 15$ minimum wage.

It ends tips-adjusted minimum wage, so that’d be 15 too.

And

It ends disability minimum wage, you know? that thing? where you can pay someone literally pennies to do a job? that. It ends that. And its in a bill that will be very hard to defeat.

So honestly, if the cost to get those three things is that its not a *new* $2000 check, only a $1400 check…. you may disagree, but I’ll call this one a win.

hey y’all i work a support line for a place that handles money and i just dealt with a young dude who just got scammed through Steam/Discord so fucking bad and i know a lot of my followers are younger so like. pls be careful because this guy is likely out of over $500 that legally nobody can retrieve for him

the scam was:

rando “accidentally” reports the kid and gets his account frozen on Steam

rando apologizes and promises to help him get unfrozen, provides “direct contact for an official Steam dev” and gives the kid someone’s Discord handle

the kid goes and talks to the “dev” on Discord, the “dev” tells him that they just need to verify that he isn’t a bot

the “dev” tells him to go to a 3rd party exchange site and transfer money with a debit card in the kid’s legal name, promises he’ll send it back

of course the “dev” is fake and the rando who reported the kid is part of the scam ring, and the kid is not going to get his money refunded by the scammer. the issue here is that since the money was willingly sent through a 3rd party transfer service (anything like paypal, venmo, cashapp, etc) the kid has almost NO WAY to dispute these charges, even though he was scammed.

I've seen several versions of this scam, sometimes involving sites like PayPal where it might seem more reasonable to verify yourself with a money transfer. You should never have to verify your identity by sending money somewhere. At most, the financial institution (bank, cashapp, PayPal, whatever) may send YOU money and ask you to confirm the amount. At no point should you initiate any kind of money transfer for "verification."

This also includes giving someone any kind of login info for PayPal etc. And if someone sends you a text or email to verify yourself, read it carefully to make they aren't resetting your password.

Not related to this particular scam, but still common: do not buy gift cards except for the express purpose of having that gift card, do not verify a purchase by reading off the codes on gift cards, once someone has that money it's gone. Do not deposit checks and then immediately try to withdraw them. Do not take "jobs" that require you to pay a portion of your paycheck to someone else. Do not deposit checks on behalf of someone else. Make sure you're on the official website, and don't use forms of contact that you can't confirm.

of note: i’ve been targeted by the aforementioned steam scam

your account isn’t actually in any danger, your account never actually gets frozen. they never even actually report your account, and even if they did, one “accident” isn’t going to get your account locked down.

if you get contacted by someone on your friends list with that story, let them know on whatever other means you have to contact them that their account’s been compromised.
