seeing stuff like this is so upsetting because these terms were well known and widespread in the ace community but because of exclusionists many people stopped using terms like this because they felt uncomfortable and unsafe.

i loved these terms when i was in highschool, i loved the feeling of community, but i lost that because i didn’t feel comfortable openly and proudly calling myself asexual.

they’ve hurt so many people and damaged our community badly and i will never forgive them for that. we deserve to use our own terminology and feel safe within our community.

I remember ppl - even other ace ppl - saying the card suit thing was “cringey” and “straight ppl aren’t gonna take us seriously” (sounds familiar?) So i guess the community wound up abandoning it. We were also having severe issues at the time with aces being stereotyped as “childish/immature” for associating things like cake, dragons, and space with asexuality, plus in general as most aces just don’t “get” allosexual things in media and irl. We were starting to be viewed as ignorant, virginal, childish, losers, etc. I haven’t seen an ace-cake thing in a good while now.

This was the infancy of exclusionary influence on us. I didn’t realize it did more damage than just closeting us. Whole symbols and terms have been lost. Community has been lost.

I remember three-four years ago I got myself into the ace community on Insta, and I came across these terms. People in these circles would talk about cake, space, dragons, and the black ring on the middle finger. Then, a year or two later, ace content fizzled out (I thought it was Insta’s algorithm figuring out that I knew all this and didn’t bring me the old stuff) and young aces had no idea what any of these were - including the black ring. Finding out young aces had no idea what the black ring meant nearly snapped my heart in two - I proudly wore the black ring, I drew characters with it, and it was my quiet way of communicating to others what my sexuality was. I was baffled at the lack of knowledge - and it turns out that exclusionists got their hands into our community and snuffed us out. 

Anyways, we need to bring this back. I thought the card suite thing was cool, it taught people the different ways people can experience attraction, I loved making jokes about preferring cake, I loved wearing the black ring and talking about it with my fellow queer people at my highschool QSA club.

I’m sorry, people don’t know about the cake or ring anymore? I remember being welcomed with spams of cake gifs, photos, and MS Paint drawings. I also distinctly remember that the block solo ring in the midle was meant as reference to the Ace of Spades (black, solo, middle of card). Only thing I didn’t know was that other aces could represent a more refined nuance. Let’s see if we can get this all rolling again.

This is the exact reason I started my #ace positive and #aro positive tags. I remember learning about asexuality and thinking it was cool, but not for me (yet). I remember ace visibility day where people would post selfies with an ace card to signify their orientation like in the original post. I remember going through the tag and following every ace blog I could find, turning notifications on and scrolling through their blogs endlessly to learn more about it. I haven’t gotten a notification for any of those blogs in ages.

Going through all those blogs and seeing validation, learning more things about my newfound orientation was so incredibly as a questioning and unsure 15 year old. It’s devastating to me that this community has fallen quiet so much. So I started my tags, hoping to spread some more positivity and maybe inform people. This community is full of incredible people and the fact that so little of them remain, it heartbreaking.

I remember seeing the start of ace exclusionary rhetoric only a few years ago… I can’t believe so much of the ace culture got lost to it so quickly.

Please, if you want to start exploring an identity for yourself (especially one exclusionists will try to tell you doesn’t “belong”), consider finding and talking to older people who’ve been in the community for a while - preferably IRL if that’s safe, or on dedicated community forums. 

Diversify your research and look outside of socmed, which can be a hive of exclusionist rhetoric and flat out misinformation.  Ask around about old publications or websites (the ace community has been developed and discussed in queer spaces for pretty much as long as those spaces have existed)!  Check out the sources in wikis!  Do your best to learn the history - because there is history.  Share what you learn with your peers!  Every queer identity has an older and richer culture than the exclus want you to think, and you all deserve to be a part of it.

This is exactly why the whole "Queer characters can only be played by queer actors" argument, or the queerbaiting celebrities argument is not only unhelpful, it is actively harmful. You are not entitled to other peoples identity. You are forcing people to come out in order to protect their careers, when they may not have wanted to share that with the world. Real people can not queerbait. Real people can not be bad representations of themselves. Do not conflate how you treat fictional characters with how you are allowed to treat real people. We can not keep having the same conversation. Forcing people to come out or else face social consequences is Bad. Always. Everytime.

In this case, Kit is literally a teenager who has been facing overwhelming amounts of online abuse for not being open about his personal identity.

Im seeing it with other queer media too. With nicholas galitzin and taylor zakhar perez in the red white & royal blue movie, people demanding that they should have been recast with "actual queer actors" despite the fact that we do not know if they are or are not queer. We can never know until they tell us that they are, which they have not.

Im also seeing it with young royals. With the new season coming out later today, the speculation on omar and edvins sexuality and relationship is incredibly harmful and toxic. They are real people, please treat them like people instead of fictional characters you can write rambling, speculating paragraphs about.

One half of my family is Native Christians via forced conversion.

The other half is white Christians, including missionaries.

I can tell you that missionaries don’t just invalidate other religions (mainly indigenous religions) to try to convert people, they blatantly hold valuable resources hostage to convert people.

They’ll provide books to communities with low literacy rates… but all the books are bibles or otherwise Christian-centric.

They’ll host free meals for the whole community… but the people have to attend a church sermon before they’re allowed to have food.

They’ll host events and groups for kids… but all the education and activities are about Christianity.

Missionaries blatantly take advantage of scared and vulnerable communities, who are like that because of Christian colonialism, to forcefully convert them and kill off their religions and cultures.

Anyway, the curriculum of this “class” mostly involved how to get young Muslims, usually women, to doubt their faith and resent their own cultures and tradition. Like. The hard truth about autism acceptance that a lot of people don't want to hear is that autism acceptance also inherently requires acceptance of people who are just weird.

And yes, I mean Those TM people. Middle schoolers who growl and bark and naruto run in the halls. Thirtysomethings who live with their parents. Furries. Too often "the world is literally burning" rhetoric tips over into "humans are the virus and will always screw up the world," ignoring the fact that other cultures have consistently managed to find ways to live in the natural world without destroying it.

Like??? "Violence" is not inhuman, nor does it make people less than human.

What I mean is, perhaps these kids are violent. But if you think for a little bit, you will realize that there are probably circumstances in which you, also, would be violent. Such as if someone was trying to assault you, or someone was threatening to kill your loved one.

Violence is not a good response in most circumstances, but it is literally a normal human response that is on the table for practically everyone, however extreme the circumstances that might prompt it.

It seems pretty obvious to me that if you subject people to abuse and violation of their basic bodily integrity, a portion of even the most normal, peaceful, well adjusted people will respond violently. If violence is appropriate anywhere, it's appropriate then.

now I could go on and on and on about every bad thing she did but I’m just gonna look at how she treated her children since she is primarily a mother and it’s like her main personality trait.

Bill — tried to get him to cut his hair, hated his fiancée for literally no reason, smothered him so much that he moved to a different country, only ever brought up the fact that he was head boy and prefect

Charlie — succeeded in making him cut his hair, smothered him so much he moved to a different country, only ever brought up the fact that he was prefect (and not ONCE that he was quidditch captain)

Percy — pressured him to be perfect his whole life so that he felt the need to always get good grades, be prefect, be head boy to get her love and affection, lead to him becoming obsessed with making it to the top, neglecting his family just so he can prove his worth, and being outcasted for it

Fred and George — felt so overlooked that they turned to troublemaking for attention, didn’t care about their hopes and dreams, threw away six months’ worth of hard work and then was upset that they were sulky about it

Ron — well, I don’t even need to go into Ron do I

Ginny — she had it best of all since she was the girl Molly always wanted but even she was somewhat mistreated, felt the need to prove herself to the boys whilst simultaneously being the perfect girly daughter for Molly, and it’s not until her fifth year that she finally breaks out of that girly role and does what she truly wants for herself

and one more thing that really grinds my gears,

she was a housewife looking after children who had either moved away or were at school for TEN OUT OF TWELVE MONTHS OF THE YEAR

meaning that for 10/12 months of the year, all she did was knit, listen to Celestina Warbeck, cook food for her and Arthur, eat hot chip, and lie

not only did she have way more kids than she could handle but she wasn’t even willing to work to support them when it would’ve been very easy to do so once ginny had gone to hogwarts at the very LEAST

so yeah, in conclusion, Molly Weasley sucks and people only like her cos she treated Harry better than she did her own children was nice to Harry
