it's crazy how once you notice how literally everything centres men all the time you will never be able to enjoy anything properly ever again

i am excited for man of tomorrow, like, i think it will be good, and i have high hopes that it will treat kara well, and there's some vindication in that, in the fact that the character at least will continue on despite the movie's failure and likely be successful and beloved. but it won't be lost on me that she'll be successful only because she appeared in a movie focused on a man later on

like as a fan of the character, the DCU's Kara Zor-El, I'm gonna be glad to see her not vanish because of one bad movie. that's the benefit of a cinematic universe, i guess. maybe she'll even get another movie in the future despite the first one flopping, like thor in the MCU, since that seems to be everyone's go-to comparison (even tho thor 1 & 2 are both centuries worse than supergirl). i have some doubts they will, both since the movie's sheer failure at the box office will likely disincentivize warner bros higher-ups from wanting to invest in a sequel, and more pressingly because it's now obvious that the severity of misogyny in comic book spaces is way worse than anyone expected, and attempting to launch another female-led and centered story is gonna be a tough sell

so it's bittersweet. when man of tomorrow comes out and it's unsurprisingly great, people will praise kara, they'll praise milly's performance, they'll be invested in the character. but what i dread coming from this are 1. the people saying "THIS is how she should've been in her solo movie" about her post-development, dogging on the movie's interpretation of her character, insisting still that the movie was garbage and only THIS take salvaged her and "did her right" and 2. the inevitable sexualization disguises as praise. we've seen it in the MCU with characters like yelena, for whom sexualization and attraction are used as shorthand for caring about a female character. discussion of their arc and their development MIGHT come with it but more often than not it'll be people posting gifs of her and drooling over them and calling that investment in her character, while actually giving a shit about the men and dissecting their arcs

i can just tell a lot of you haven't cared or thought about the transfems in your life and how they were affected by you and things you affiliate yourself with.

like, i guarantee transmisogyny has been apparent and effective in most friend groups, support groups, clubs, queer spaces, work spaces, and whatnot you've ever been a part of. people you know or knew are transmisogynists. places you've felt safe in have made transfems feel unsafe. does that transfem actually enjoy your "trans inclusive misogyny" jokes or does she feel like she can't speak up? is that transfem really quiet and inactive in your group or has everyone spoken over her, convincing her that her voice doesn't matter? is that transfem just stay home when you go out because she's introverted or because she has legitimate reasons to feel uncomfortable in the same places you feel perfectly fine?

if you have a transfem friend, it's very likely either you or someone you know have perpetuated transmisogyny against her and you've mistaken her pacifism for contentment. this happens all the time, entirely uncared about, because it's easy and convenient and socially permissable to ignore her powerlessness. don't pretend it hasn't happened because thinking about it makes you uncomfortable.

i think about rape a lot because i'm an abolitionist and i was raped in the classic Violently Raped By A Stranger way. when i talk about prison abolition with people i often get that push back of like "yeah sure but we still need prisons for rapists and for murders."

putting that guy in prison wouldn't have done anything for me or even for anyone else. rape doesn't stop because we put every rapist in a cage, because a rapist isn't a kind of person. and because everybody can rape and everyone might rape. rape also doesn't happen because of opportunity (not necessarily). it's like, rape happens because it is part of the processes that reconstruct the world we find ourselves in. rape is a force (one of many) that drives gender and racial subordination, which are needed for capitalism to work. rape happens because it has to.

black men and women are raped to reinforce racial hierarchies, women are raped to reinforce their subordination to men and to reconstruct the nuclear family, trans women are raped to dehumanize us. rape is a deterrent and rape is productive. we're raped because we are a threat.

when people say like "what about rapists?" i say there aren't any. i wasn't raped by a person, i was raped because it was necessary.

and honestly i think about rape a lot because it gets me off. and i don't think it's necessary to construe that as like a healing process or a taking back of power or anything like this. i think that all comes after cumming.

rape is very plain and common and i think its elevation to this grave unforgivable absolutely tarnishing of both victim and perpetrator unspeakable act really serves to like, extend its usefulness to the status quo. i think that has to be rejected. i think everyone should talk about being raped. even if they are afraid the word doesn't fit. even if they don't believe what happened to them rises to that level.
