Kyoshi and Rangi from new official comics "Masters of the Elements"!
They are so cute together!
*Bolin talking nonsense*
Lin: Bolin, I’m going to need you to do me a favor.
Bolin: Anything.
Lin: Imma need you to shut the fuck up.
Bolin: ok.
warm up before starting work! Toph, the greatest earth bender of all time
[ID: a drawing of toph from a:tla, drawn in a semi-lineless style on a white background. She’s with her back to the viewer in the middle of an earthbending pose, standing down and her hands in fists. To the right, a large boulder is being lifted in the air by toph’s earthbending, casting a small shadow on the ground. End ID.]
Fire prince since it was recently 17th anniversary
more rangshi, because i’m terminally obsessed with this book
a small drawing of one of my favorite scenes from the kyoshi duology. happy mother’s day <3
lin & tenzin | exile
You're not my homeland anymore. So what am I defending now?
Fire Lord Izumi ❤🔥
6/6. No worries, this is not the end. I still planned to draw the other characters from TLOK, so stay tuned :) Also, the bonus MILF will be decided by my patrons. You can join my P4treon here, in case you want to have the power to vote on which character I should draw next and other benefits, including spicy ones :)
I will forever fight people who say Lin was rude for not talking to Toph all those years, here’s why:
This scene was really sad because when Lin finally confronts Toph about not treating her the way parents should she instead gets a scowl and the response ‘I forgave you for all your nonsense years ago’ and that’s my problem Toph has NOTHING to forgive Lin for, Lin did absolutely nothing she was protecting herself and that’s human nature. She cut them off because she was being invalidated and so many people look over it and say it was solely because of her scars, it’s deeper than that if you properly listen to this line: ‘But now that we’re together again I remember why we stopped taking, you make me furious and when I tell you, you don’t even care.’
The worst part is I LOVE toph ,this whole situation was so out of character from the Toph in ATLA, she wouldn’t have acted like this and I stand by that,
Feel free to leave your opinions, I’m bored and it’s a safe space
Do you know of any fanfics that deal with Tenzin's feeling about harmonic convergence and the new Airbenders? Specifically how it relates to his relationship with Lin? I mean, obviously he'd be happy about more airbenders in the world but if he hadn't felt the pressure to have kids to continue the Air Nomad culture, he and Lin may not have needed to break up. I just thought it would be interesting to explore if he had any regrets.
I can't believe nothing is springing immediately to mind for this, but I know it's out there and I'm prob forgetting something obvious.
Can any followers reblog this w recs please??
OK @thescatteredscribbler thank you for asking this cause i have literally had this in my drafts for over a year. It would’ve been chapter 3 of my fic where lin and tenzin write letters to each other that they never send. I never finished writing lin’s thoughts but here’s what I wrote for tenzin !!!!
Lin,
I could see it in your eyes when you and Mako came to the island. I could see you and I had the same thoughts. If only we knew 20 years ago that there was another way for the air nation to be reborn. So many fights and arguments we wouldn’t have had. The pressure and weight that we had carried for years- decades- would’ve been non-existent.
This should be the happiest day of my life. I'm no longer one of the last airbenders, my family is less of a target, and the dreams and efforts of my father have come to fruition. Yet my joy is halted by the cruel, cruel injustice that I can't ignore. I know you feel it too. Those unspoken words shouted between us after you arrived on the island today. As we both realized that the very thing that tore us apart is now...It's nothing. That fear and burden is gone. And for some sadistic or comical reason this has happened now. After all these years. New airbenders. We could've... We could've been together- been happy all this time.
I have truly never been this angry in all my years. All of my sacrifices for my father- for his culture. Spirits- think of Bumi and Kya! Think about how much relief they would've had as children- they wouldn't have spent a second in self-loathing over their lack of airbending abilities. I could've just been their younger brother. Not the only hope for the air nation.
God, I wish my father could see this. I wish you and I could see this- together. And I know I have no right to be sad. I made my decisions.
And though I believe that I'm being completely illogical with these feelings of anger and disappointment. I made my choices and I love my family- I do. And yet I still spend so much time loathing myself for settling for this life instead of holding on to the one I made with you. I feel responsible for your unhappiness. I deserve every glare, every snide remark, every snub you give me. I deserve to be buried and suffocated under your broken stones- one for every day that we've spent apart.
I cannot ignore the sharp ache in my chest that I've spent the last 16 years trying to dull. That raw truth that i had so hoped to never face. and now I still have to live with the consequences of my own cowardice.
May the universe be more kind to us in the next life. I will find you there, Lin. Not a single obstacle will stand in my way- big or small. I will hold on to this hope. For now, it is all I have.
-Tenzin
My second piece created for the AtLA fanzine, Everything in Balance- Zuko and Iroh at the Jasmine Dragon. 🫖🍵🥟
Can you imagine how hard it is to be a geologist/paleontologist/archeologist in the ATLA universe? Really any job involving rocks and dating things via rock layers must just be exhaustively difficult. But I bet there’s also a whole branch of science devoted to dissecting old earthbender battles based on rock formations, which sounds like delightful fun.
Okay I was going to leave this in the tags at first but then I wanted to add photos
Map Being Used
This one from the Avatar Wiki
Determining the Structure/Function of the World
1) Round World
According to Avatar Wiki the map “is also heavily distorted, much like a Mercator projection, a type of cylindrical map that makes a round surface appear flat while still preserving loxodromes.”
2) Magma
There are numerous volcanoes, meaning there is magma beneath the surface
3) Geomagentism
There are compasses that are used for navigation, meaning that the world is generating a magnetic field.
4) Plate Tectonics
We can assume that various mountain ranges we see form as a result of plate tectonics. For instance, there should be a hot spot approximately under the Fire Nation, creating the arpeggio the way island chains like Hawaii and Polynesia form. This means the plate is moving to the East, subducting beneath the Earth Kingdom.
So we’re going to assume the non-bending related geologic processes in atla function the same as ours
5) Pangea
Again from the Avatar Wiki “the above map excludes an entire hemisphere of Earth, most of which is oceanic.”
So the world is in a state similar to Pangea, with the land masses collected together.
In fact, given the mountain ranges surrounding the edges of the Earth Kingdom, it is probable that the plates are converging, on the cusp of reforming one large land mass.
Impact of Bending
Even if it’s been hundreds of thousands of years, bending has not existed for a large scale of geologic time. However, there are cases of very powerful bending that permanently alter the course of geologic history. So while there are cases where the impact of bending is negligible, it cannot be ignored.
1) Lava Bending
Sometimes benders do stupid shit like fight volcanoes. In Roku’s case, it involved plugging up the vent and stopping the eruption. Aang redirected the lava around the town. Roku has made it so the pressure will continue to build, and that some of the magma will be redirected to make sweet phaneritic textures. Aang has given any geologist who wants to study that eruption in the future a headache as they try to figure out where the trench came from and how the region that should have been devastated by the eruption was impacted.
2) Seismic Sense
No thoughts, only how much easier it could be to study small earthquakes if you could train yourself to sense them instead of hoping for the best with the seismographs you have available. Although there would be a degree of subjectivity to the research.
3) Sedimentary Rock Record
When the formation of the rock is largely dependent upon factors in the environment you know bending is going to change things. Sedimentary rocks form mainly as a result of alluvial (water) or aeolian (wind) related processes. This means that bending could have some sort of impact on their formation. However, unless the change is something more long term, such as the rerouting of a river, it is unlikely to have a significant impact.
4) Weathering and Erosion
The same is true for weathering and erosion. Bending could either speed up or slow down the processes that are already occurring. It would have to be considered as a possible contributing factor to any unexpected changes in the natural process, but should not have a large impact on the rock record.
5) Stratigraphy
Earthbenders like to destroy millions of years worth of stratigraphy to launch a rock at an enemy or make a point. They can absolutely mess with the layered sequence of rock.
It’s important to note that these are already issues that need to be addressed when studying paleology, archaeology, etc.. There are natural processes that can destroy or invert stratigraphy, like landslides. While the loss destroys primary context and can make interpretations more difficult, particularly in fields like archaeology, it is still possible.
There are two main methods of dating. Relative and absolute. Relative dating is using surrounding clues to determine age, such as using the layers of a sediment and different objects found within them. You get an age, relative to other items, i.e., Pot A is older than Pot B but younger than Pot C. Absolute dating is using methods like dendrochronology or radioactive decay to determine a number age for an object, i.e., Pot A is 25000 years old. Even if bending can impact relative dating, absolute dating is still an option. There is also a possibility for Sequence Dating, using a known sequence of evolution for something such as pottery to date a new find.
So while the destruction of stratigraphy does mean a loss in valuable context, there are much more interesting things, in my opinion at least, to be considered.
6) Radiometric Dating Techniques
Radiometric dating involves measuring the decay of radioactive isotopes to determine an age of crystallization or cooling for a rock. It tells you how long it’s been since a rock was at a certain temperature. A mineral with a cooling temperature of 300 degrees and age of 60 million years means the rock cooled past 300 degrees approximately 60 million years ago and has not gotten that hot since.
Zircon is a common mineral used for radiometric dating because it has a high cooling temperature, around 900 degrees Celsius. Enter firebenders. Specifically Azula and her blue flames, which reach a temperature of approximately 1500 degrees Celsius. This means that under sustained heat from a fire like Azula’s, the age of the sample would be ‘reset’ and appear to be brand new, even if it’s been millions or billions of years.
7) Plate Tectonics
This is it. The big, permanent, physics-defying crazy stuff. The bending that would absolutely fascinate and horrify the geologists.
Remember that time Kysoshi used her bending to split Kyoshi Island off from the mainland. That means she used her bending to CREATE A MID-OCEAN RIFT
Which, when compared to the proposed original trajectory of the plate, means she either…
Changed the direction of the plate
Or completely changed the plate’s trajectory
8) Bonus - Modelling
With bending, it could be possible to make non-computer generated models to test various hypotheses. It would take a high level of control, but you could use bending to make a model of the world for observation and testing.
In Conclusion
The methods of analysis and study would be fundamentally different because there would be new methods (e.g., seismic sense) and new challenges. While a lot of the effects of bending would be similar to those caused by natural processes, such as landslides destroying stratigraphy,
Trying to study geology in atla would be brutal. Millions of years of stratigraphy can be destroyed in an instant. The reformation of the supercontinent could be prevented because Kyoshi decided to form an island.
Seriously you could argue any hypothesis. I could write my doctorate on how I think the mountains in the Northern Earth Kingdom and Northern Water Tribe are the same formation, and the reason they’ve weathered at different rates is because waterbending speeds up processes like freeze-thaw while earthbenders use their bending to prevent any weathering from happening. And no one would be able to stop me. No wonder that professor who was after the secret library was like that.
Oh this DELIGHTS me. I love when experts hope into my posts. Always a great time.
it’s always “the moon looks so beautiful tonight.” it’s never “the moon is so loyal and diligent for never straying from orbit and always regulating our tides,” or “the moon is such a gentle soul,” or “the moon really has a great sense of humor.” ppl are so fucking shallow these days smh
