Weird thing about having my first office job in my second language— knowing words ONLY in Japanese.

I’m trying to tell my parents about my work and it’s like “oh yeah I file the seikyuushos” and “we signed a dairiten contract” and “we don’t own the machines; they’re itaku”.

there is no amount of language learning that is useless. I think it obviously scales up in wonderfulness as you learn more, but even just being at the point where you can recognize what language is being spoken or written is still a more useful thing than not knowing that. it is lovely to say hi to people in their language! any attempt to learn is important. you don't get fluent overnight. and you don't have to get fluent overnight. more knowledge is better than none. it isn't just all or nothing.

For me, बायल्या (bāylyā) is one of the ugliest words in Marathi. It translates to womanly and means effeminate. It is supposed to insult men and boys who aren’t seen as “masculine,” but it’s more of an insult to women and a reflection of our patriarchal society that being compared to women is considered demeaning to men.

Was just talking to my friend the other day, the one who started studying Japanese for her trip to japan in November

Despite never studying before, she found she already knew a LOT from anime. she knew how to say “happy birthday” and “it’s hot” and “it’s cold” and “that’s amazing” and “ahh, I see”

On the other hand, her partner…didn’t. Even though he also watched a lot of anime, he didn’t remember as many of the words or phrases

I asked why she thought that might be. She said she wasn’t sure, since she didn’t actively study.

She said “I mean, I like to repeat what the characters say sometimes” and I said “oh, we call that shadowing.” She said “I like to look up the song lyrics and then check what the words mean in English, just for fun.” I said “nice. sounds like vocabulary study.” She said yeah and then me and my friend used to joke around by quoting the shows, like バカ！and ごめん and かわいい and…like, 元気ですか？and, uh, あついですね！and i was like “so…conversation practice”

Don’t get me wrong, maybe some people really do just watch a few TV shows on repeat and the language somehow sticks. But a lot of people who “don’t study” just don’t realize they’re studying, or they naturally did some language acquisition things that you had to actively learn how to do

the best thing about being an intermediate language speaker is that studying can be whatever you want.

watching tv in your target language? studying.

playing your favorite video game in your target language? studying.

listening to music in your target language? studying.

you have finally broken out of the beginner stage, and you are equipped with enough grammar, vocab, etc. of the language to be able to derive meaning from almost anything (to a point).

you can immerse yourself however you like, and it can be a lot less boring than something like "susie likes to play piano". you can force yourself to understand anything with enough effort (and a dictionary)... or if you want something more lowkey you can just play stardew valley and call it an academic endeavor. that works, too.

The Question Word का-

का = “why” (when it comes at the beginning)

का = question particle (when it comes at the end)

तू खात आहेस का? → Are you eating?

Omg! You're right! I probably read it wrong and typed it wrong. With letters like ण and झ with the extra line, I always read झो as झे or vice versa lol. Even in hindi. Thanks for pointing it out, will edit asap :)

The thing about Lovecraft's work is that he did write about some genuinely fucked up critters, but he doesn't seem to have had a clear picture of which ones those are. "Dog that inhabits right angles" and "sapient colour" are treated as exactly as mind-bending as, like, "guy who looks like a fish" and "big penguin".
