J.R.R Tolkienâs love for languages was fueled by his mom who taught him Latin, French and German at home. He then went on to be a professional philologist of ancient Germanic languages, specializing in Old English. During his career, he also picked up many other languages including Welsh, Finnish and Old Norse. His vast understanding of languages helped him create many conlangs of his own, such as Finnish morphology in Quenya or Welsh phonology in Sindarin. For Tolkien, a language canât exist without its own culture, history. Thus, he worked tirelessly to give a distinct identity to each and every of his conlangs.
