Love that Kalim is mocked as just lazing around in his privileges, when he has shown on multiple occasions to take initiatives to learn and do things. Sure he has to learn to do even basic things, and it may take a lot more time for him, but he is not this awful stupid rich boy who can never do anything right like how SOME people in this fandom talk about him. Somehow those people demonize him so much more, when the other boys - twisted from villains mind you - hardly ever treated him in such a way??
Also his privileges come with multiple attempts on his life from when he was young, and some if not majority of those attempts come from his own relatives. But then again people had actually wondered why would Kalim need therapy, heās rich! (Actual words btw) before, so.
There is so much more to vent but I donāt have time for a long eloquent post (and that could require calling out certain people outright). My main point is, Kalim deserves better than how 80% of the people in this fandom treat him.
Iām so annoyed about how people discuss Kalim. Antis ares one thing, but even neutral people seem to disregard his trauma in favor of talking about another character (most often Jamil) and only focus on the āhelpless spoiled rich kid who is so out of touch that he doesnāt understand a lick of peopleās emotions at allā characterization like theyāre permanently stuck in Jamilās brain in book 4. Literally just stop talking about Kalim in general.
š itās been just days and Iāve just seen someone talks so condescending about Kalim being a helpless privileged baby that Iām half convinced theyāre kinning Jamilās view on Kalim pre character development. Itās been a while Iāve been this mad about someoneās talking about Kalim. My god go fuck yourself
sometimes I forget that for a good chunk of deltarune fans, this is their first rodeo with a messy love triangle because I keep seeing takes like 'what's the point of shipping a one-sided ship' 'they should just all hold hands'
look, ships have not and will never be about canonicity. ship wars are extensions of ego, not the work
shipping at its core is about the dynamic and relationship between characters. it is a way to celebrate, dissect, and comprehend the ways in which characters affect each other, reveal things about themselves that wouldn't be possible alone, and ultimately, how that reflects the themes of the story. people ship non-canon ships because the canonicity isn't the point: the dynamic is
what does suselle's happiness mean for both susie and noelle? what does it reveal about kris and noelle? what does it imply about kris and susie?
i understand the desire to not engage in something painful, but the one-sided nature of kris' crush is a beautiful added layer to kris' character because it highlights their otheredness and repressed self so well while also showing how much they also want their friends to be happy. it illustrates their struggles as a character who is their own person with their own needs and wants, yet is so enigmatic to the general player base that nearly none of them clock how kris feels in chapter 5.
kris has spent their entire life being the second choice, the afterthought, the one left out if the azzy dess thing is anything to go by. and now they have to stand silently as their favorite person chooses someone else while contending with the player choosing to thirdwheel them (and also how they want susie to be happy with noelle because they're a backstabbing little enby). this unrequited crush is a reminder of that in the form of a knife that twists in our heart.
meanwhile weird route reveals to us that the 'only kris knows how weird i am' is this unsaid connection between kris and noelle who both desire to 'leave' and find something new and freeing in their constrained, powerless lives. the irony is that they are video game characters who use, well, video games to achieve this feeling through things like evil routes, glitches, and clipping out of bounds (which is then actuated when the veneer of noelle's reality is forcibly shattered by the player). just as kris had always been 'heading nowhere', so too was noelle similarly trapped and 'heading nowhere' until susie came along
the happiness susie brings to noelle is an echo of the happiness we've seen kris experience due to susie. because kris and noelle are similar, we can deduce that the ways in which noelle feels about susie is similar to how kris feels about susie (such as the locker scene in ch5) and vice versa. similarly, the joy that susie feels with noelle is a romantic mirror of the comfort she feels with kris. she doesn't understand love, but she also has so much love in her heart to give. it's implied that noelle is partly why susie is 'still here' and this moment of their two hearts beating as one is why their love is so pure. susie needs a presence like noelle just as noelle needs a presence like susie and suselle advances both their character arc wonderfully
all this to say that shipping is so much more fun once you think of it as character exploration. free yourself from 'my ship has to be canon' and use canon as fuel for you to explore what makes these characters tick and what about their dynamic you find fun
a ship being one-sided (and staying one-sided) is evocative precisely because it is tragic. explore that!! dive into the many layers that I didn't get to describe!
we shouldn't shy away from tough emotions; they're a reminder that this story is so important to us that it can evoke such feelings
im sure this might come across as odd and you dont have to piblically post. but i have been debating leaving twst because of the way people treat scarabia and the blatent bullshit kalim has to deal with that people in higher positions than him dont. i was so tired of watching people cry over the damaged white boy of the week while spitting on kalim for something that isnt fully in his hands and seeing your kalim post reminded me there are people who are out there that get it. so thank you for that. sorry if this is weird of me ^^; and sorry for rambling. you make great posts
Hi! Itās totally okay!! Omg Iām happy that you find some comfort in my small rant (literally the first post Iāve made in like years, I mostly just reblog things afsgshdg). Being a Kalim fan is genuinely like being a soldier in this fandom when people keep ignoring him in favor of others, even when they have their posts started WITH Kalim š literally so disrespectful. With Minajael I think we have to watch people pushing Kalim aside in favor of Mina š already Iāve seen people saying Kalim doesnāt understand Minaās burdens⦠even tho he is the one person so far to talk, compliment and express concerns about him. I honestly hate it here.
This dismissal of Kalimās character is something Iāve seen even big voices in the fandom do this too, so I get that itās very draining. I honestly just retreat to my own space with other Kalim/ Scarabia fans to avoid drama. I would say from my experience Iāve encountered more bad Kalim takes on Tumblr than on Twitter, shockingly enough (donāt even think of TikTok lol). So I would say there are dedicated Kalim fans out here defending him (fighting for their lives to do so). Weāre small but weāre mighty lol, some of their stuffs are very fascinating to read.
If you do leave I canāt blame you, but if I may, I would advice just donāt interact with the fandom as a whole except the people you trust with Kalim takes. Youāll get less of a headache when you decide to ignore/ block people who are just way too stuck in the unfair takes about Kalim. I did see myself slowly losing the enthusiasm for twst due to lack of Kalim contents and those fans, but I canāt really leave because of Kalim and people who does his character justice, or at least sees him more as this shallow (and mostly negative) character.
Damn, is it really that bad? Most of my interaction with twst is on tumblr, and I didn't realize the fandom can be like that.
Kalim is one of my favorites because of how complex he is. Does the Scarabia fandom not realize how hard it is to go through that shit and still keep believing in the world? To be betrayed by the person you trusted most, still defend him against an entire dorm, fight his bitch-ass in a dream, and THEN, try and build a relationship with that same person!
Not only that, but despite his own flaws, Kalim is one of the rare exceptions to the whole, "Night Raven College students don't work together". Man managed to rally an entire dorm (without knowing it) and keep them from devouring Jamil alive. He's genuine, resilient, and actually cares about the people around him.
Also, this is just my own personal headcanon, but I believe that Kalimāof everyone in Night Raven Collegeāis the one person nobody wants to see angry. He is the definition of, "Demons run when a good man goes to war", and if he is finally pushed to the point of overblot, I think he would be one of THE biggest threats.
Tbf there are Kalim fans and antis on both platforms Tumblr and Twitter but Iāve seen some strong defends for him on the latter. There are Kalim fans here too (Iāve met my Scarabia people on Tumblr in fact) but the defenders on Twitter are louder. At least from my experience.
Yes he has his fucking flaws but god some people act like heās one of the worst people in the case moral-wise?? Somehow??
Honestly atp Iām spiteful enough that I advocate for Kalim to just snap and use his UM to flood the whole place. Because there are people who STILL think his UM poses no threat at all?? Bro that is just because of HIS character not wanting to hurt anyone, not the magic itself.
im sure this might come across as odd and you dont have to piblically post. but i have been debating leaving twst because of the way people treat scarabia and the blatent bullshit kalim has to deal with that people in higher positions than him dont. i was so tired of watching people cry over the damaged white boy of the week while spitting on kalim for something that isnt fully in his hands and seeing your kalim post reminded me there are people who are out there that get it. so thank you for that. sorry if this is weird of me ^^; and sorry for rambling. you make great posts

May I humbly request Jamil Salt/ Jamil fandom salt. Everything has to be a pity party for Jamil, we must be extra critical of Kalim, Iām tired of it! May all of Kalimās angst be tripled and put onto Jamil š

Are the Jamil fans gone? GREAT
I FUCK HATE HATE HATE HATE JAMIL!! Oh words cannot explain the rage he stirs up in me.
āOh but he had a bad childhoodā I wish it were worse
āHe doesnāt get to express himself or be who he truly isā good I like him silent ALSO IF HE CANT TALK BAD ABOUT KALIM OR COMPLAINT WHY AM I ALWAYS FUCKING HEARINF ABOUT IT
āI hate Kalim hmph I hate hate himā alright gay boy why are you doing his hair and makeup and cooking for him everyday when we have so much proof in text you donāt have to be doing all that
I hate Jamil like AM from āI have no mouth and I must screamā hates humanity.
I canāt even read through his little lying bitch speech in book 4 in any form without getting so mad irl I start punching things and heavy breathing. THE AUDACITY FOR PEOPLE TO BELIEVE HIS STUPID LITTLE LYING ASS WHEN HES DOING THIS FACE š„ŗ
Jamil is also such a little bitch hypocrite. He doesnāt want to destroy the system that trapped him he just wants to be the one benefiting. His dream is to have servants and be rich and be greedy. He doesnāt care about the common man.
His ass isnāt even poor. I see you buying designer clothes in that one event you asshole.
Also he complains did I mention he complains??? Oh my god did I mention he fucking complains about every. FUCKING. THING??!!!
Like oh my god he acts like heās gods poorest little soldier.
Also heāll fucking do shit for Kalim that no one asked him to do just to be mad about it????
Heās like āI have to protect Kalimā AND THEN DOESNT?!! KALIM HAS ESCAPED YPUR WATCH SO OFTEN AND IF WE INCLUDE EVENTS HES GOTTEN KIDNAPPED WHILE YOU WERE THERE MULTIPLE TIMES?!!
āMy family will be thrown out onto the streets guys š„ŗš„ŗš„ŗā you overblotted and your family is fine. Holy shit the way that also if you were really worried about this you wouldnāt have done this plan to gain power for 2 years of highschool???????? āOh let me endanger my family to be student council presidentā ARE TOU FICKING DUMBBBBBBBBB
His plan is so stupid donāt even make me start
Also his ass acting like heās glued to Kalim when he didnāt even become a personal servant till he was 13 and also we know that he went to just normal middle school and had normal friends.
Bro your situation sucks but oh my god you had more freedom than like Riddle, Idia, and etc. like damn Iām sorry I truly think your childhood trauma is valid but so is everyone elseās.
Also Jamil is so cringe. Heās is not your alpha tough guy smooth smart boy. He is your cringe fail idiot who thinks heās better than everyone but isnāt. Oh my god Iām sick of Jamil power fantasy revenge scenarios because he already got that in canon. Also like itās cringe and gay. Itās so gay
āOh Quinn heās not in love with Kalimā
JAMILāS HEART WOULD SAY OFHERWISE OH MY GOD HES ALWAYS TRYING TO GET THAT COOKIE LEAVE KALIM ALONE
Kalim tries to bond with friends and Jamil is like āwhy didnāt you tell me where you were going? Itās dangerous to be here without meā JUST GET LIFE360 at this point I think Kalim ignores Jamilās texts on purpose because I would too.
Also fuck Jamil he deserves to suffer. I DONT WANT TO SEE HIM WIN EVER
HUMILIATE THAT MAN
DESTROY HIS LIFE
I HATE HIM I HATE HIM I HATE HIM INHATE HIM
I literally experienced a hate crime in highschool and I hate Jamil more than any of those boys.
I would be suicidal again for just a glimpse of a world where Jamil is suffering
I pray on his downfall everyday
I donāt hate ANY real person as much as I hate Jamil
He bothers me so often
And it sucks because I LOVE kalijami and Kalim both of which include Jamil because even if I was just a Kalim fan, Kalim loves Jamil so much and itās so important to his story I could never erase him.
Also I would not nearly hate Jamil as much if his fans werenāt constantly so mean to me and all the other kalijami/Kalim fans.
Also HES NOT A SLAVE
OH MY GOD
HES NOT A SLAVE
JESUS CHRIST HES NOT A SLAVE
IM SICK OF BEING ACCUSED OF SUPPORTING INDENTURED SERVITUDE AN SLAVERY BECAUSE I WANT TWO ANIME BOYS TO KISS??
WHY WOULD SHIPPING TWINK SERVANT JAFAR AND TWINK MASTER SULTAN EVER REFLECT MY MORALS AS A GROWN ASS ADULT?!! ARE YOU INSANE?!!!! IN WHAT UNIVERSE??????
Sorry for kicking twst fans while they are down right now ugh
ALSO
Jamil is so cringe and I only enjoy him when heās talking about how cringe he is or when heās getting beat up by Kalim
āGuys donāt cheer for Kalim beating up Jamil thatās wrongā HE TRIED TO KILL ME YOU KALIM FLOYD JADE GRIM AND AZUL?!!!!
God forbid he gets punishment for his actions. We let him off so fucking easy in book 4 they shouldnāt actually live-streamed that shit. They basically rewarded his ass by making hims a lead vocal
When Iāll be honest it made no sense. Jamil isnāt a singer heās a dancer and also he doesnāt practice singing as a skill and rewarding him for nothing is stupid. It just reinforces his dumb mindset of āIām only bad at this because I canāt show my true potentialā like dancing is something he actively practices and is good at but they probably didnāt choose this because Kalim is a better dancerā¦WHO SAID THATā¦I DID
Also god he pisses me off so bad
The way Kalimās lab vignette and the school uniform vignette AND HELL EVEN THE FUCKING ANIME EXTRA(even though it was a complete bastardized version of the lab vignette and made no sense) SHOW YOU DONT HAVE TO COOK FOR HIM AT SCHOOL?!! WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS? āKalim ignores his Noās sometimesā OKAY AND IN THE LAB VIGNETTE YOU SHOW YOU CAN OVERRIDE THIS?! NO ONE IS HOLDNG A GUN TO YOUR HEAD YOU BITCH JUSY DONT āKalim is making me do too much workā SOMETIMES YEAH BUT SOMETIMES YOU ARE BEING DUMB
āWhat if he makes mistakes and makes it worseā JUST LET HIM FUCK UP SOMETIMES JAMIL OH MY GOD THE WORLD WONT END IF HE BLOWS A COUPLE THINGS UP ALL THE STUDENTS DO YOU ARE AT MAGIC SCHOOL?!!!
The idea that you think you know Kalim soooooo well when you didnāt even realize how bad his childhood was until book5 is just astounding. You didnāt even understand how much he loved you and how much heās willing to cover for your bitch ass.
āKalim is ungrateful for meā WELL ITS ACTUALLY A TWO WAY STREET AND YOU ARE WAYY MORE UNGRATEFUL AND INCONSIDERATE??!!! YOU DONT EVEN RESPECT KALIM AS A PERSON?!!! KALIM IS TRYING TO BE BETTER TO YOU AND YOU ARE BAREY PUTTING IN THE WORK?
YOU DONT EVEN TELL HIM SORRY
āSorry for what-ā FOR TRYING TO KILL HIM AND HYPNOTIZING HIM?!! HEY GASLIGHTING A GUY WITH BAD MEMORY(CAUSEDD BY TRAUMA) IS FUCKING INSANE
WE NEVER TALK ABOUT HOW FUCKED UP THAT IS āoh Jamil says that Iām just tiredā HES ACTIVELY GASLIGHTING KALIM DO YOU UNDERSTAND HOW HORRIFYING IT IS FOR YOUR CLOSEST FRIEND TO TELL YOU THAT YOU ARE PASSING OUT AND FORGETFING WHEN THEY ARE ACTUALLY USING YOU AS A MEAT PUPPET TO ABUSE YOUR PEERS IS?!! HOLY FUCK THATS SO MESSED UP?!!
AND ITS PREMEDITATED
IT WAS PART OF JAMILS PLAN TO WEAR DOWN THE SCARABIA DORM AND OVERWORK THEM AND MAKE THEM SO TIRED THEY CANT THINK STRAIGHT WHICH IS IDK TORTURE

WHAT HE DID WAS TORTURE
WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU JAMIL YOU ARE THE SCUM OF THE EARTH AND SCARABIA DORM SHPULDBE BEEN ALLOWED TO KICK YOUR ASS
I HATE HIM
I hate HIM
I HATE HIM I HATE HIM I HATE HIM
Heās also such an ableist bitch to me āoh you canāt read social cues you must be an idiot. Stop fidgeting dumbassā I HAVE FUCKIJG AUTISM YOU INSUFFERABLE PRICK

He doesnāt deserve anything
ALSO HIS SCHEMING FACE IS UGLY HES NOT EVEN THAY PRETTY LIKE LEONA IS SO SEXY AND JAMIL IS JUST MID IN COMPARISON CHIRST HIS STUPID SMIRK AND SQUINT IS FUCKING DUMB!!! I HC MY FAVS AS AUTISTIC OR KOREAN OR AROASPEC OR TRANS SO THAT O RELATE TO THEM BUT I HATE JAMIL SO MUCH I HAVE THE REVERSE POLICY HE CANT BE ANYTHINF LIKE ME WE CANT SHARE ANYTHINF IN COMMON

HIS UGLY NESS SHINES THROUGH BEFAUZE HES SUC A SHIT PERSON OH HE RADIATES EVIL I HOPE HE GETS REINCARNATED AS A POOR OMEGA WITH AN EVIL ALPHA IN A YAOI MANWHA IN HIS NEXT LIFE I NEED HIM TO SUFFER I HOPE HE FEELS NAUSEOUS AFTER EVERY BITE I FOOD I HOPE HE CANT SLEEP DUE TO PARANOIA I HOPE THE LOVE OF HIS LIFE MARRIES SOMEONE ELSE AND CUTS HIM OFF FORWVER
I've loved Oogie Boogie for over 20 years, now I break down and love Swing as much as him
On November 9th of 2025, Twisted Wonderland revealed a new event- the first ever Christmas event! And per usual the holiday event revealed a new character based off a Disney movie, but this one was different-
It was part 2 of The Lost in the Book series, this one for The Nightmare Before Christmas. The first part introduced us to Skully J. Graves and planning Halloween. This year we are introduced to Swing, and have to save the holidays, especially Halloween and Christmas.
Now to get this out of the way- if you've played video games back in the mid 2000s this sounds familiar: Capcom had released The Nightmare Before Christmas Oogie's Revenge, a PS2 and original XBox game, which is a sequel to the movie. I was in high school, already deep in love with Oogie Boogie after seeing him in a multiple page advertisement for the first Kingdom Hearts game, and watching the VHS of the movie so many times it can make anyone's head spin, so obviously I hopped onto buying this game. We also got the release of The Nightmare Before Christmas The Pumpkin King, a GBA game, which is a prequel to the movie in the same short time span. What do these two games have in common besides the obvious? They both introduced the idea of Oogie Boogie wanting to be King of Halloween Town, though the sequel goes into him taking over all Seven holidays and being the Seven Holidays King.
I quickly bring this up because people these days are saying Oogie wanted to dethrone Jack in the movie, which he actually never did. He just wanted to gamble with Sandy Claws, then got mad when Sally tried to free Sandy and the two almost got cooked up, then Jack saves the two and kills Oogie. Only time he was happy about Jack's demise was when Sally was telling Oogie that if Jack heard about what he was doing to her and Sandy, that he'd be lucky if he (I assumed) lived or got away with it.
And then we got the prequel book decades later: Battle for the Pumpkin King, which throws in the idea of Jack and Oogie being childhood friends until Edgar, the former Pumpkin King (yeah, apparently Jack wasn't even a Pumpkin Prince or anything royalty in this), decides he wants Oogie to replace him, but screws that up and Jack wins. It... gets weird since essentially everyone somehow has known each other since childhood...
But I'm not here to talk about all the sequels and prequels and spin-offs this story now has.
I'm here.
For Swing.
To break down Twisted Wonderland- all the main characters and Event characters you meet in this mobile game are based off of various characters from various Disney movies from the last century. From the main villains and their henchmen, to heroes and even objects and miscellaneous characters that make you scratch your head. The focus is on the villain iterations. In the case of this post:
Swing is this world's version of Oogie Boogie.
A big note to characters in this game is that they have a lot of references and details about who they're based off of, but have enough of their own personality to stand on their own. Swing is no different.
For anyone who has followed me and my art and writing for literal decades will know- My love for Oogie Boogie is here to stay. I love him in wherever he shows up, because I feel he's highly unappreciated and underrated as a villain. When Ken Page, his voice actor, died back on September 30th, 2024, and the announcement of his death on October 1st, 2024 at the age of 70, I was horrifically devastated. It didn't help I had actually just gotten home from my own relative dying and putting things in place so they'd go the way they wanted to go (hospice), and then they passed the end of the same week Ken Page passed away. I was broken. Strongly broken. I sank down into my Oogie love for comfort. My real life basically got ate up with work and working 60 hours a week, so if I wanted to do something personal I'd really have to plan ahead or just. Deal with it. It sucks. Don't recommend.
This part I feel is important to me as a person to bring up, is because the first part of that TNBC event happened the same year all this happened, and I was hoping Oogie would show up. He got mentioned, but I was upset he didn't show up. Looking back- I realized it was very much good that Oogie didn't show up, or I would've been even more depressed than I already was. I still feel sadness when I see Ken Page in photos and videos, but time does heal wounds. Not all the way right away, but it does help. The scars will always be there. I will always be ready to cry for him, but my love for him is behind those tears.
So when the first video of Swing dropped, I was shocked- was this really Twisted Oogie??? I zoomed in to find all the details I could to confirm. The hoodie. The centipede tattoo. And finally the coin is what confirmed to me that this was very much him. I was ecstatic! I wanted to know his name so bad! I wanted more of him!
Then on the 15th, we got his name during the livestream event:
Swing. He's 6'7" tall and chapter 1 would be coming out the next upcoming Thursday.
Which brings me to here- I will be analyzing, pointing out, and just plain fangirling over Swing, because I got a lot to say, and if you also wanna see Swing in action, the Youtube channel Valkyrii has a translation of this Event and many others, which I will use for this, and various other screenshots and observations from the game thanks to other fans. There are also other channels that have played the event that are untranslated or are also translated, but I use Valkyrii as my main source. Twitter/X also helped with translations and breaking down parts of the event too.
Welcome to my channel!
I mainly cover Twisted Wonderland JP & EN - gameplay, story updates, event info, and the latest TWST news.
If you lov
Now, let's get started!
To start off, I wanna look at his name. Swing. In game Swing wants to be called that, so that tells you right away it's not his real name (Skully as a ghost confirms this and has to ask if he has a neck tattoo), since people know him best as The King of Desire, a fae that plunged Twisted Wonderland into pure chaos because of his own greed and chaos. Even he mentions how that's such a nostalgic name. The reason he wants to be called that:
"I mean, look! It's such a fine moonlit night. Doesn't it make you feel good enough to start dancing?"
and
"Ahh, yeah. Some people used to call me that. What a nostalgic title... But now I prefer Swing. It's cute, and I like it."
Hopefully the EN translators keep his name or the reasoning behind this is all gone.
So what about the word "swing" itself? The first thing people will think is swing dancing: a very energetic form of dance that people will typically associate to Jazz music. Oogie Boogie's Song is very jazzy, as Danny Elfman, the musician and lyricist (and Jack Skellington's singing voice in the movie) based the song off of Cab Calloway, specifically "Old Man of the Mountain". Swing's theme, battle, and boss music is also jazzy, and I find it pretty cool that while Swing's theme is very calm, his battle music is hectic, and the boss music turns into a serious mix of the two. I also feel like a little bit of Swing's theme references the scene where Oogie has Sally and Sandy Claws.
He even talks about dancing with the other characters he's fighting, like telling Lilia it's rude to keep him waiting when he has the shield up, complimenting Kalim when he's dodging attacks, and then uses Ruggie's UM when he has it (will talk about how later) and using it on Jack Howl to make him dance like him. Oogie himself also has quite the dance moves in his song, and dances with Santa too against his free will.
I also wanna point out the other meanings to the word "swing" because I got curious if it was also a gambling term, and it is!
Discover the art of Swing in poker, a dynamic approach that can tilt the game in your favor. Understand its impact on your bankroll and when
"What Does Swing Mean in Poker?
A āSwingā in poker refers to the fluctuations in a playerās bankroll due to the inherent variance in the game. It represents the ups and downs experienced during play, where a player may win or lose money over a series of hands or sessions. Understanding swings is crucial for managing emotions and bankroll effectively."
This term makes me think of what Swing is doing: He's not a fool. He's making sure he's the one always winning. There's a reason he's strong physically and magically. He's actively telling us the audience that things are going the way Swing wants them to go, even with the coin flips he gets. He stays pretty calm, but can also go super chaotic to show that he means business and you cannot knock him down that easily, but he can still be thrown off guard. I'll go more into his personality later.
Of course gotta bring up briefly the other meanings of the word: We got the action of swinging like on a swing set, shifting opinions, and engaging in group sex (yes I had to mention that one), since the word has multiple meanings. These are just examples.
Now, Let's talk about his appearance, because I've seen people say he's ugly and he doesn't give off the Oogie vibe, to which I say:
Bullshit. We literally got an apple and you can't tell he's an apple from first glance.
Anyway
Big thanks to TwstAssets on Tumblr for the model of Swing, in both Live2D and chibi!

I'm gonna break this one down into chunks.
Face and hair: Swing is a dark-skinned fae (darker than a vast majority of the cast), with black hair that's tied up in a ponytail with his own hair, as opposed to using a hair tie. This is very much an obvious reference to Oogie Boogie's own head as he has his own pony tail going on.
His eyes are a bright green, which is a nice contrast and reference, but his pupils are the most interesting part- a lot of people including myself, thought they were X's, but then revealed in game that they're more of an upside down Y, and honestly they remind me of those silhouettes of fly's that you see when you look at them from above.
He has scars on his face, which is no doubt a nod to Oogie's stitches. One on the left side of the forehead, two on the left side of his lips that go through top and bottom lips, and on his lower jaw to the right side. He has at least 6 piercings on his ears- 2 on the right and 4 on the left, with the left having a round one with a spiral at the end of the ear, and while people can think it's naruto (the fish cake for ramen), it's more likely that it's a reference to Oogie's wheel in his song number and then later in the movie that he tried to kill Jack with. (sample below). He also has a 5 o' clock shadow (haha like shadow Oogie) going on with his chin, which I think really puts together that he's an older gentleman and may actually have a standard to his appearance since he doesn't go full beard. And gotta mention the living centipede tattoo he has going on, because that is actually one of the coolest part of his character design. It can move, get long, and even hold his coin. (sample below)

Coat- His coat is the most obvious part of his reference to who he's based off of. Green like the song number. Stitches all over, torn at the bottom, no doubt wearing down because of age. Decent amount of pockets on him. The hood literally looks like Oogie, and I find it interesting that they gave it glowing little orbs in it when Swing wears it, and I think it really fits the theme. You only see him wearing the hood up in chapter 1 and then near the end of 5, which is a shame because I think I'd be neat if he kept spooking people with it on.
One piece: This outfit is very interesting because this one piece can tell a story when you really look into the finer details- The main base of it is white, with stitched up patches of stripes and swirls on it. No doubt he has gotten into fights or just getting old and worn out that he most likely fixed it himself. What catches people's attention the most and makes people theorize is that there's a lot of belts and straps on it. There's even clips on it. A fun detail a fan pointed out is that when the hood is up, his collar is tied up, but when the hood is down, the collar is undone. Like he's trying to hide his neck tattoo when the hood is up.
Now notice where all the straps are located at: Across his chest, waist, neck, and legs. No doubt there's some on his arms if the theme Yana was going for is correct. This is where people theorize that he could've been in prison or an asylum. Specifically, the one piece is a strait jacket.
The image above doesn't show the legs, but this does give a good idea of a certain style of strait jacket he's wearing. Now how long was he stuck in a prison or asylum is currently up in the air until his Vignette and SSR card comes out in JP servers next years. We don't even know how powerful he was at the time (which I will get into his power level later).
Quick note- he does have a loose belt that drags on the ground. It might be a stretch, but I think that's a reference to Oogie' loose string that Jack pulls at the end of the movie.
Boots and Shackle:
Not a lot to say on the boots. Big, leather boots. Sturdy for all the running away and kicking he has to do. Now, the shackle on his left wrist is the interesting detail. His sleeve is pulled up on it, which to me suggests he got the coat before his time locked up, and he doesn't hide it either.
And I saw one user notice an interesting detail on the chain- at the end of it, it looks like it wasn't cut- it was bent and ripped off. While the game sprite above shows a more clean cut, his official image shows it clearly ripped.
Either Swing is strong enough to rip his own chain off, or he managed to get someone's Unique Magic (which I will talk about) that made it able for him to do so.
Now let's compare to Oogie if we just focus on the movie, which is what this event is based off of: He never left his lair, but is he truly able to? We know Sally used a leg to distract him, but how was she able to do that???? Never answered. Gotta assume he's basically stuck down there for all eternity, like being in a prison.
The games? In The Pumpkin King, after beating Oogie, Jack basically has him imprisoned in his lair, but this Event isn't based on it, but I'm willing to bring it up as a possible source of inspiration for Swing's whole appearance.
... in fact I am pretty sure the 2000's games inspired quite a bit of things in this.
Now that we're done with appearance, I want to talk about his power and Unique Magic.
Strength:
While I am not well-verse in Twisted Wonderland and know that there are weak and strong mages- Swing has proven himself to be REALLY powerful. While it was easy for him to break out of Ruggie's Unique Magic (He can control people physically) ((Leona broke out of it too)), what shocked a friend of mine was that he broke Lilia's magic shield- a retired war general. Lilia ain't a joke, but Swing easily gives the fellow fae a run for his money. What makes him powerful is that he has no restraints or limits on his magic. A lot of mages have strict control of their magic or just don't use it as much, but Swing-
"... Magic has to be used more freely, more fun, more chaotically."
I feel like his view and use of magic is like luck- Luck is chaotic. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Can you create your own luck? Of course. Can you mess with other people's luck? Hell yeah. Swing is obviously doing both: Making his own and messing with others. Judging by how he's able to use his magic so freely without an issue, he has no doubt mastered how to use so much of it without the risk of overblot. You can also think that he's cheating as well- like Oogie Boogie.
He also talks about how magic cries and wants to be used more, and he thinks it's stupid mages have rules and standards when using magic. I feel like he either isn't aware of overblot or is just so powerful that he never had a chance to experience it himself, which is the opposite of Fellow Honest (the Honest John version. He is who actually sucked me into Twisted Wonderland in the first place. Unlike Swing, he's weak but he can cast his UM ((it makes people a little happy and willing)) multiple times without risk of overblot).
However, near the end of Chapter 5, he loses focus on his magic when his coin gets eaten by Oogie (will talk about this later), so clearly he still has to have some sort of control over his magic.
To briefly get into his physical strength- Yes, he's strong there too. He was able to do a flying kick to Deuce when Deuce tried to attack him. And it's not just the fighting either- judging by how he's still able to be on his two feet no matter how much magic (and being bitten by wolf Jack Howl and hyena Ruggie when he got Jack Howl's unique magic ((WILL GET TO THAT I KNOW I SAY THAT A LOT!)))) is thrown at him: he has no doubt trained himself to be able to withstand anything thrown at him. Deuce even used his Unique Magic (able to counter back with equal power of the other mage) and used Swing's power against him, but Swing got back up and was still pretty fine, however he can still be caught off guard as he was when Deuce kept his Unique Magic (thanks to Lilia and Silver shielding him) he was able to get a taste of his own power again before he retreated after getting Sandy Claws. He was also able to make Ortho drain his energy by making him blast it twice (this is more offensive though and no doubt done on purpose), but judging by dialogue the outfit: Ortho's wear in the event isn't very powerful.
This is a stretch, but I think his strength (mostly physical) is based off of Oogie' strength, because in his song number he was able to carry Santa around with ease, and Santa ain't skinny either!
Now to get into an important part of his magic:
Unique Magic "Switch the Doom":
To throw it out there- Swing is very much old, because
""Unique Magic" huh. That's quite an interesting name for it."
So he's been around longer than the term "Unique Magic", and earlier him hearing Lilia's voice and asking if he's from Briar Valley also clues us in on his age.
Now, what does his Unique Magic do?
"This magic swaps the most important magic you guys possess, including Swing-san's own. Even Swing-san doesn't know what the result will be. Truly a game of chance! How about it. Don't you think that's fair?"
What I find interesting in this is that Swing is willing to throw his own life on the line for fun, which is the opposite of Oogie Boogie, as to quote him from his own song:
"It's much more fun, I must confess. When lives are on the line. Not mine, of course, but yours, old boy? Now that'll be just fine."
Now, his Unique Magic- it's randomized on who gets what, like a deck of cards. Everyone throws their card in, deck gets shuffled, and everyone gets a new card. It's all luck on who gets what, but how powerful you are (and not being the original mages of the Unique Magic) says on how strong the spell is on the mages. Swing has no issue repeating using Floyd's own Unique Magic (makes people magic miss) on the students in rapid succession, and he was able to master Ruggie's Unique Magic quickly. How long does it last? By the looks of it whenever he recasts his Unique Magic, which tells me his Unique Magic doesn't fully leave him. He can also cast a decoy, as he was able to partially cast it and made it so Kalim, Rook, and Ace couldn't cast their own Unique Magic. I mentioned earlier that he lost control of his magic, and this includes his Unique Magic, which made everyone get their own Unique Magic back.
It's pretty similar to Azul (he makes contracts, where one person exchanges what they have for success, but if they fail they have to work for him) and Trey's Unique Magic (overright temporary sensory characteristic, but can also override people's magic but that's rare), but I've also seen a comparison to what happens in Tinkerbell and the Pirate Fairy, or an episode of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, as recent examples of Swing's Unique Magic. Honestly, any show or movie that has body or magic swapping is Swing's Unique Magic.
However, all this does come with a (self imposed) price: he says his coin is a talisman, and he flips it to make his choices, even when he's winning. He doesn't mind this, since he's already powerful. Until... we'll get to that part.
Now to move onto something I've been looking forward to: his personality, because the similarities and contrast between Oogie and Swing is something I really love.
Quotes:
To start off with, let's start with his battle quotes. Big thanks to MysteryShoptls on Tumblr for their translation. I will be going through it and saying which is from Swing, Oogie Boogie's song, and from Oogie's dialogue in the movie:
š¬ 2Ā Ā š 47Ā Ā ā¤ļø 408Ā Ā·Ā Swing Battle LinesĀ Ā·Ā Swing currently is only a foe.

Hah! (honestly Oogie laughs so much this can go into song or dialogue. RIP Ken Page I love your laugh as Oogie.)

ć¼ćI'm feeling weak... with hunger. (Dialogue)
Battle End
It's hopeless, you're finished, you haven't got a prayer. (Song)
This is very much me being obsessed, but reading this and being able to pinpoint the quotes was a delight for me. Swing goes quote Oogie directly or in his own way throughout the game, and some I realized is the Japanese version of the movie he's quoting, so I'm hoping the game translators can quote the original movie.
Now, for what I've been looking forward to...
Personality:
Oooohhh, there's something about his personality that makes me love him so much! So much to say!
To start off- Swing refers to himself in first and third person, even in the same sentence. A lot of people were thrown off with this, and I realized that Oogie does it too in the movie!
"And if you aren't shaking, then there's something very wrong. Cause this maybe the last time, you hear the Boogie' song."
"Seven! It's Oogie Boogie's turn to Boogie now!"
So this was a nice, little detail to think about! Jack only does this once fun fact.
Now there's something I noticed greatly- Oogie is playfully wicked (he seems playful, but he's actually wicked) but Swing leans more into being wickedly playful (he's pretty wicked, but there's a lot more playfulness in his actions). Swing wants a lot of fun and chaos, more entertainment, new experiences. He doesn't care about how he gets it as long as he gets it, even using other people to get what he wants. He's even pretty relaxed at various points of the story, especially when Oogie is furious at him for letting people go, or teasing the main cast.
Oogie doesn't speak to his henchmen, Lock, Shock, and Barrel, in the movie. The closest we get to any sort of interaction is when they feed him a fried bug in "Kidnap the Sandy Claws", and then sending down Santa down the chute later in the movie, and that's really it. Even in the deleted scene where they're trying to listen to what Oogie is doing before decided to get movie snacks and drinks and going down to see what's going on in the hole (which explains in the movie why and how Jack got down to the hole).
Now in the Event, Oogie obviously interacts with them, but I'm focusing on Swing here. I find it interesting that when the trio get Grim instead of Santa, Swing doesn't get mad, at least not like Jack did when they brought the Easter Bunny in the movie. Instead, he basically finds this as another way to get what he wants. Then later when Swing told the trio to go get Jack after shooting him down, one of the students tries to stop them with magic, and he defends the trio and scolds the students for attacking kids. It's pretty opposite of what I think Oogie would've done.
His interaction with Sally is interesting too. Oogie was all over Sally's leg until he realized her leg wasn't attached to her when she tried to free Sandy Claws, then he was ready to kill her in the movie. In the game, Swing is actually a little nice to her, and even calls her miss despite kidnapping her.
In fact, Swing is... kinda nice. In his weird, wickedly playful sort of way. Even to the NRC students he'll call them "cute little boys" and praise them for how hard they work and fight, right before going back to kicking their asses. He praises a lot. He's especially big on praising when Oogie and Ruggie show how greedy they are. Pretty sure he's either buttering them up or taunting them depending on situation. There's no good intention behind his sweet words.
Swing has a wide range of emotions.
Like whoever came up with his facial expressions did a fantastic job with it. In fact, the ones where he has both hands on his head is a nice nod to Oogie!
I started to think about what kind of gamblers Oogie and Swing would be, and I'm pretty sure I got it somewhat figured out. Oogie is the gambler who will keep gambling for that instant gratification, and doesn't hide the fact he's cheating to do so. Swing is more meticulous, willing to put all his savings into one big pool to win, but he's secretly card counting to win, and keeps a really calm face until something happens.
I bring up the card counting as a way to explain his thinking process. Remember: he says things are going his way. He's confident in this, but he's making sure it's a guarantee. I am 100 percent sure he made the NRC students reveal their powers to him and how strong they are so he can truly strike back hard. Not every mage is made equal- some UMs are physical, some are magical, some are support, some aren't even for fighting. Literally card counting people.
As for what card counting is- if you've seen Rain Man, you've seen the scene where the main character realizes his autistic brother is able to count and memorize things after a box of toothpicks fell over, so he sees if the same can be done with cards, and when confirmed, they go to Las Vegas and they win a lot of money before the casino owner kicks them out. There's also assuming what the opponents have in their hands, since there can be only so many cards and suits a hand can hold and what the deck has left. DO NOT DO THIS AT AN ACTUAL CASINO YOU ***WILL*** BE BANNED IF THEY FIND OUT YOU'RE CARD COUNTING!!!!
Okay so, remember his coin that I said I'd come back to- well, he loves taking people's things. He's the King of Desire, after all. He relies on that coin for his choices, but. But. He's a hypocrite. When Ruggie turned into a hyena and bit him? He took his precious coin, and he was horrified. At that moment his house of cards went crashing down. The coin isn't even anything special- just a toy, but it still belongs to Swing. Oogie's against him thanks to Deuce' convincing skills (and honestly it was obvious Swing was going to betray him). During the final fight, Swing is furious and wants his coin back. How dare they steal his things?! Once Ruggie throws and Oogie eats his coin- it was all over. He lost. Can't make any decisions now! Lost control of his magic thanks to his emotions going haywire. Meanwhile, Oogie really only used his dice to make his lift move so Sally and Santa would get cooked sooner, and he always had his dice close, despite being naked all the time. Oogie also tries to keep himself together (ha) near the end of the movie.
He has a much better fate than Oogie did in the movie- Oogie got his thread pulled by Jack Skellington and then his own machine pulled the rest off his bug body, where his bugs fell into his stew, then his main bug got squished by Santa. He just gets tied up, head being covered by his hood, and then taken to Christmas Town. And I kid you not-
Gets redeemed because of the miracle of Christmas. I. Kid. You. Not.
He now loves Christmas, but he's still gonna take Halloween away, mark his words. Also Oogie doesn't die in this! And he gets praised by Jack! Which he finds creepy!
You have no idea how much I love this. It's silly, stupid, and such a contrast to Oogie. I saw this coming but I still love it. It gives me a lot of ideas.
Now I bring this up because it turns out he had his own holiday- The Feast of the King of Desire day. When does it land? Christmas day. No one remembers it because Halloween overshadowed it, and now Christmas is gonna overshadow it thanks to our heroes.
... Hey wait isn't this like the Pumpkin King prequel game where Oogie had "Bug Day" in August and no one celebrated it, so it vanishes and he runs to Halloween Town to turn it into his own Bug Day-
... YANA TOBOSO WHEN I GET YOU I WANNA KISS YOU-!
And gonna give this event credit- they did keep Swing powerful in the end. Yeah they took his coin, but even after that he's still an asshole who just loves Christmas so much now. He might even still remember the events of the book judging by the end of the event (He says "Merry Christmas" when he sees Grim and Yuu. Gotta also love how they went the horror movie route where the villain survives). Meanwhile Oogie never got redeemed and saved by the Christmas spirit in his movie. Or. Anywhere actually. Oogie still stays a greedy bag of bugs, and I gotta admire a majority of the sequels, prequels, and spin-offs for keeping him that way (Battle for the Pumpkin King went the "good to bad" route to note).
This is a long stretch, but I have an idea: What if Swing is supposed to be the Krampus of Twisted Wonderland? Think about it: he loves greedy people and in the story of The Feast of the King of Desire- he takes the bad people away, like Krampus. Meanwhile Santa gives gifts to the good people. Could also explain why he's dressed up like a prisoner and has the Oogie Boogie hood. Again, this is a stretch.
This is what I have for Swing until next year when his SSR comes out. Will I cover it like I did with this year's event? Would love to! But it depends on where I am next year and if people wanna read my insane ramblings, thoughts, and fangirling of Swing.
Honestly this event has been really fun for me to watch as someone who loves Oogie as much as I do. To see all the similarities and differences between my favorites and break things down, then seeing the possible references and inspirations from the franchise. I really am looking forward to seeing his SSR in Japan and then seeing him translated into English (don't fuck up his name translators or I'm coming for you. You already gave Fellow the name Ernesto Foulworth).
And... I wanna thank you all for taking your time out of your day for reading this. I've enjoyed sharing my love for Oogie and Swing.

Centre of Halloween Town
Sebek: āHey, Bones! Iāve brought the things you asked for! Where should I put them?ā
Jack: āThanks, Sebek! Could you put them next to the well?ā
Sebek: āNext to the wellā¦? There are things scattered all over the place! Come on, move that basket out of the way now!ā
Jack: āAh, my bad! Let me justā¦ā
???āOh, itās better to remove that basket from there indeed. Consider it done!ā
Sebek: āAh! Bones! Quickly, donāt just stand there! Move that basket!ā
Azul: āNo need to rush! The task is already completed. Now, please put your things where you wanted.ā
Sebek: āGr⦠unbelievableā¦ā
Jack: āHm? Is there a problem with Azul-kun helping out?ā
Sebek: āA HUGE PROBLEM! Owning this man a favor is the biggest mistake of your life!ā
Azul: āNo need to think of it as a favor. Iāll be happy with simply an appropriate compensation.ā
Sebek: āIt was your initiative; I didnāt ask you to help! Who put that basket there in the first place? Hm? Jack, isnāt it Sallyās basket?ā
Jack: āAh, thatās right! It was a treat from her. Sally is smart, thoughtful⦠and extremely kind. I sometimes skip meals when Iām absorbed in something. The treat this time was especially delicious.ā
Sebek: āIt sounds like you get treats like this from her quite often. Without the basket, itāll be hard for her to bring the next treat, so you should go and return it to Sally. And while youāre there, why not tell her what you think about her meals?ā
Jack: āYeah, you might be rightā¦ā
??? āHey Jack! Weāve made some adjustments to the decorations according to your instructions yesterday. Can you come and check?ā
Jack: āYup, sure! Yeah, looks great! Keep it up, guys, and finish the rest of the decorations!ā
??? āOi Jack, come taste this sweet, would ya? We think they turned out pretty neat!ā
Jack: āLet me see⦠Ooh, very tasty! But Iād add more spices!ā
??? āJack, there you are! I need your advice on somethingā¦ā
Jack: āOkay, coming! Just a moment, alright?ā
Jack: āIād love to return the basket and express my gratitude, but, as you can see, Iām a bit tied up here⦠So, Sebek, could you please return the basket and leave a message from me to her?ā
Sebek: āI REFUSE!!! She always treats you so kindly. Wouldnāt it be only fair if you personally go and express your feelings of gratitude?ā
Jack: āWell, I guess youāre right...ā
Azul: āWell then! Please, if you need your basket delivered to Sally, Iām the person you can rely on!ā
Jack: āAzul-kun, will you really do it?ā
Azul: āOf course! I canāt just leave you in trouble, Jack-san. Letās handle this matter with a spirit of true compassion, shall we?ā
Sebek: āHold on! Jack asked ME for help. Why are you suddenly jumping into our conversation? What are you up to?ā
Azul: āMy, my⦠why would you say such things? I simply want to help a person in need. Especially a lady with love life issues⦠So, hereās a suggestion: Iād like to take over this basket delivery task as compensation for helping you clear up earlier.ā
Sebek: ā.........Very well. I do not wish to owe you a debt. However! I will accompany you to Sallyās place to make sure youāre not plotting anything underhanded.ā
Azul: āFine. I donāt mind. Because even if I say no, youāre still coming, arenāt you?ā
Jack: āHmm, is it really okay if you two go togetherā¦?ā
Azul/Sebek: āOf course! / SURE!ā
Jack: āThanks a lot! Please tell Sally Iām grateful!ā
Dr. Finkelstein's Lab
Azul: āWeāre here. I wonder if Sally-san is at home?ā
Sebek: āSince Sally is in charge of cooking, I think she might be in the kitchen. HEY! SALLY! ARE YOU HERE??ā
Azul: āDonāt shout all of a sudden!ā
Dr. Finkelstein: āSeriously now! Donāt shout like that; I can hear you.ā
Sebek: āFinkelstein, I donāt remember calling you. So, is Sally not at home?ā
Dr. Finkelstein: āGot business with Sally? Well, I wonāt let you see her anyway.ā
Sebek: āNot letting us⦠what do you mean by that?ā
Dr. Finkelstein: āShe keeps disobeying me, so I had to lock her in her room to reflect on her behavior.ā
Sebek: āLocked up⦠so thatās why she⦠HEY SALLY! WE WILL LEAVE THE BASKET IN THE KITCHEN! Apparently, that was loud enough for her to hear me too. Letās go back, Azul-senpai.ā
Azul: āThis wasnāt only about the basketāwe still have a message to deliver from Jack-san, remember?ā
Sebek: āThatās a matter he should have conveyed himself!ā
Azul: āAbandoning entrusted jobs will tarnish your reputation and shake peopleās trust in you. But I suppose we canāt just break in⦠Very well. Letās try again later.ā
Sebek: ā......ā
Town Hall
Sally: āGood evening, everyone!ā
Sebek: āSally, is that you? If youāre looking for Jack, heās not here.ā
Sally: āI see⦠Ah! N-no, thatās not why I came to see him⦠Um⦠Right, I just came to express my gratitude. Thanks for delivering the basket earlier, Sebek-kun.ā
Sebek: āHmph, what nonsense. You came here not because of me, did you? Speaking of which, Jack wouldnāt resort to such indirect tacticsā¦ā
Sally: āOh dear⦠what are you talking about?ā
Sebek: āLetās have this conversation somewhere else. Come with me, Sally.ā
Alleyway
Sebek: āThis should be a sufficient distanceā¦ā
Sally: āWhat is it, Sebek-kun? Is this some kind of private conversation? Some sort of discussion not meant for other ears?ā
Sebek: āYes, and thatās for your sake. Iāll be direct with you.
Ā With such a roundabout approach as youāre using now, your feelings will never reach Jack.ā
Sally: āHuh?! N-no, thatās not it⦠I donāt have any special feelings toward Jackā¦ā
Sebek: āENOUGH OF THIS! HOW STUBBORN YOU ARE! Have you forgotten that Trey-senpai and I were helping you with cooking? You jumped out of the window and said it was easier than using the stairs⦠So you were really locked up in that room. I heard it from Finkelstein himself.ā
Sally: āā¦ā¦ā
Sebek: āTrapped and unable to move around freely, yet you still managed to think and act in your own way. Hitting the ground and getting your body torn apart again and again, just to deliver your treats to Jack⦠Not long after coming to Halloween Town, it was clear to me how you feel about Jack.
But that man⦠of all things, he called you a ākind personā? Iām not saying you arenāt, but really, do you believe you treat everyone without bias?
Jack Skellington is far too thick-headed! You have to make it clear to him at least once; otherwise, he wonāt get it.ā
Sally: ā...Thank you, Sebek-kun, for saying such things for my sake.ā
Sebek: āItās simply infuriating to observe! The timid attitude, the dense man, and how devotion is just being wasted!ā
Sally: āYes⦠itās great when your efforts are acknowledged. But I canāt bring myself to share my feelings. Jack is admired by all. Heās the Pumpkin King who makes anyone tremble in fear. I could never stand next to him as his partner⦠Itās utterly unrealistic. Weāre not compatible at all.ā
Sebek: āUgh, just watching you now makes me angryā¦..I shall share a tale of worth then.
In my world, thereās a classical novel called āOmiro and Riettojyuā. A couple of lovers, whose families disapprove of their marriage plans to elope, but after going through many obstacles, the plan ultimately fails. After being brought back to their families, the lovers live their lives in tears thinking of each other, whom they can no longer meetā¦thatās the gist of it.ā
Sally: āThatās a very sad storyā¦ā
Sebek: āIndeed so. But itās not just a sad story; it teaches the reader an important lesson.ā
Sally: āWhat kind of⦠important lesson?ā
Sebek: āThe lovers in the story abandoned the hope of earning their families' acceptance. They opted to forsake everything and elope. Iāll omit the circumstances surrounding the failure of the elopement, but the cause of this story's tragic ending is that the protagonists failed to articulate their feelings and thoughts clearly.
Ā Had they made sure to share the details of their plot and verify the truth of the rumors they heard with those involved, I can picture them having a happy future.
I think that the author perhaps aimed to convey to readers both the despair of surrendering and the necessity of communicating through words.
Naturally, interpretations may vary from read to read, but thatās how I personally interpret it!Ā
A story cannot be born without thoughts and feelings that one wishes to share with others. Could it be that the author of this story also experienced regret after giving up on something and neglecting to express it in words?
Iāve read plenty of other books too. Numerous tales illustrate how the lack of verbal expression leads to misunderstandings and conflicts.ā
Sally: āHehe, Sebek-kun, I see youāre an avid reader. So if I donāt give up⦠and express my feelings properly⦠will I eventually be rewarded?ā
Sebek: āNo idea! But you must believe and take action.ā
Sally: āOh... such powerful words. You must have a reason to hold that belief, Sebek-kun.ā
Sebek: āMy parents faced opposition to their marriage from my maternal grandfather. However, my mother went against his wishes and married my father.Ā
Since then, my mother has been making every effort to get my grandfather to acknowledge their relationship. From time to time, she sends letters enclosed with photos of them as a couple or with the whole family.Ā
On days off, she takes us, her grandchildren, to visit our grandfather and invites him to family celebration dinners. And I am sure there are many other efforts she makes that I donāt see or donāt know about.Ā
Even though my grandfather still disapproves of my parentsā marriage, my mother continues to believe that if she keeps expressing with her words that she married the man she loves, built a family, and is living very happily⦠one day, my grandfather will understand. And he will genuinely bless her marriage to the man she truly loves.
In fact, there seems to be some progress. At the beginning of their marriage, my grandfather would turn my dad away at the door when he visited... There's been a slight increase in the times my grandfather and father meet lately, though it amounts to maybe once a year... and my grandfather never makes eye contact with my father and is constantly frowning.Ā
But I think this progress is the result of my mother having been telling my grandfather for so long how happy she is.ā
Sally: āI see⦠You and your mother are both able to express your feelings through words properly, Sebek-kun. But Iām not like yoāā
Sebek: āDo you intend to dwell on it still?! However, I suppose⦠I can empathize with the worries and frustrations youāre experiencing.ā
Sally: āReally?ā
Sebek: āThe esteemed Malleus-sama, whom I deeply admire, is the future king of my home country. He is not just of noble birth but also a powerful magician renowned across the world. He is truly a wonderful person whom I respect deeply from the bottom of my heart!
As I continue to understand the greatness of Malleus-sama, I am reminded of my own inexperience. Regardless of how much I study or how hard I train, I can't reach the level of even my older fellow disciple*, let alone come close to Malleus-samaās level. There have even been times when Iāve worried that Iām unworthy to serve such an incredible person.ā
Sally: āYes, I know this feeling⦠and it makes my heart ache.ā
Sebek: āHowever, even if I am inexperienced or not skilled enough, itās not a valid reason to distance myself from the one I admire.ā
Sally: ā ! ā
Sebek: āI made it clear that I wanted to serve the distinguished Malleus-sama. And he granted me the privilege of being by his side as his guard.
Ā Naturally, I hold the status of a trainee. I still need more knowledge, strength, and experience to become a formal guard. However, if I keep holding back and feeling hesitant, I will only be stuck! As I work diligently alongside the person I hold dear, I will eventually become suitable to serve them.
Ā Above all, I despise cowardliness and a lack of effort! Therefore, Sally, you must strive harder! If you wish to stand beside the Pumpkin King, you must give it your all, both in action and in speech!ā
Sally: āIf you never give up and continue to put in the effort, and express your feelings clearly, those feelings may be rewarded⦠Alright, it might be difficult to express everything right away, but I will try to tell Jack how I feel!ā
???: āOho, if it isnāt Sally and Sebek-kun over here?ā
Sally: āJack!ā
Jack: āWhat were you talking about, just the two of you in a place like this?ā
Sebek: āHumph, nothing that concerns you!ā
Jack: āWhat was that?!ā
Sally: āJack, calm down. I was just thanking him for delivering the basket, that is all.ā
Jack: āAh, so thatās what it was about. Well, I also wanted to thank you once again for the treat.ā
Sebek: āHumph, it seems like the moment when Sallyās devotion will be recognized is approaching.ā
Centre of Halloween Town
Epel: āThere goes Sebek, shouting again⦠He just canāt shut up, as usual!ā
Sally: āHe just wants to express everything he feels and thinks clearly, making sure the other person gets the message. Isnāt that why heās using such a loud voice?ā
Epel: āSally-san, arenāt you being too kind?! Donāt you think he lacks some sensitivity or something?ā
Sally: āNot at all. His words gave me the courage to take a step forward. Iām truly happy that Sebek came to Halloween Town and crossed paths with me and Jack.ā
*It was unclear whether Sebek referred to Silver or all his older peers in general, so I decided to leave it as if he's mentioning Silver.
this isnāt exactly a question, but has twisted wonderland ever expanded on gender norms before? I know in sunset savanna women seem to be highly respected, but it seems like that is a behavior unique to sunset savanna. It seems like gender discrimination might be uncommon in briar valley because Mallenoa was so respected by her subjects, but Sebek, silver, and grim were surprised to find out she was so self sufficient and powerful when they met her in Liliaās dream (this is more my interpretation tho) . in the endless night event, silver tells a story about a warrior who taught for her country, which is a reference to mulan i think, and the person he is telling the story to is very surprised that the strong warrior is a girl. I think silver told that story to Leona but I donāt remember. Iāve heard that royal sword academy is a school boys and girls can both attend, but night raven college is one of the most prestigious magic schools out there, so it being boys only makes me wonder if gender is a part of magic politics, although we have been shown female characters who have high educations and magical abilities such as Mrs . Rosehearts
No, not really? Itās explicitly mentioned and touched upon in extended conversations maybe a total of⦠3ish times. Of those instances, most are referring to the Sunset Savanna.
Gender norms and politics are some of those elements of world-building that can come off as really ham-fisted and preachy if the characters stop everything altogether and just start expositing about it. Thankfully, TWST largely doesnāt take that ātellingā route and instead āshowsā us what they mean through subtle implications.
Now, for the most part I think the gender norms of Twisted Wonderland are similar to the real world, but may be more progressive overall.
For one, Twisted Wonderland has many male characters (both in NRC and beyond it) who openly wear cosmetics. No one ever comments on men wearing makeup or dressing up in a negative light. Sometimes they complain about putting makeup on (ie the effort) or certain fashions they donāt vibe with but never do they say itās ānot manlyā for them to put on makeup/perfume/jewelry, care about their clothing, etc. Even the characters we traditionally think of as masculine (Jack, Leona, etc.) wear eyeliner and eyeshadow, jewelry, or try new styles of clothing. Floyd and Ace express interest in fashion. Jamil cares about the quality of textiles and Kalim is willing to buy tons of jewelry for himself (and his classmates!!) if the mood strikes him. Rook regularly compliments peopleās looks and Cater has an eye for aesthetics too. Lilia brags that he is ācuteā and likes to show off his cuteness to others. And, of course, we cannot forget our queen Vil, who champions the idea of challenging and redefining gender norms. He also shares these ideals with Epel, who has been called out by Vil for having āoutdatedā gender norms. Given that Vil is such a popular celebrity (5 million followers on Magicam), I get the impression that the sentiments he extols is a popular way of thinking and is the direction that TWST society wants to move toward. (This is assuming that his fans are mainly younger people.) The boys often ādress upā and wear different makeup when visiting new places such as Silk City and and Clock Town, so it appears that a lot of Twisted Wonderland society that weāve explored leans more liberal when to comes to gender expression.
Another detail I think is important is that many of the Great Sevenāin fact, over half of themāare women. This is notable because oftentimes history glosses over the achievements and accomplishments of women in favor of their male peers. The fact that NRC and all of Twisted Wonderland seems to honor them in addition to their male counterparts says something. The G7 women arenāt even the only instance of female figures who shaped history. Azul and Floyd, for example, have brought up the Mermaid Princess on multiple occasions, talking about how her union with a human prince and personal efforts have strengthened the bond between land and sea.
Gendered terms to refer to mages exist, but according to Lilia, āwitchesā and āwizardsā are outdated (they were used during the human/fae war era of ~400 years ago). Currently, most prefer to use the gender neutral terms āmageā or sometimes āsorcererā.
There does not appear to be gender restrictions in terms of the modern day workforce either. We know of the boysā family members who are great mages or hold significant power or status. Mrs. Rosehearts is an accomplished medical mage, Mrs. Ashengrotto runs the most popular restaurant in the Coral Sea and his grandmother is a benefactor to those in the neighborhood, Mrs. Shroud is STYXās Chief Engineer, Meleanor is an integral leader of Briarlandās military forces, Maleficia is queen, etc. Even the women in more mundane roles play vital parts in their communities: Mrs. Clover is a baker alongside her husband, Mrs. Zigvolt assists her husband in his dental clinic, Granny Bucchi supports him as his only relative, Marja travels and helps sell her familyās produce, etc. There are many economic opportunities for women in this world.
Some may point out that NRC is a prestigious all-boys school, so there arenāt opportunities for women in education. The same goes for RSA, which is another prestigious all/ boys school. To that, I say⦠thatās because NRC is a very limited scope of magic education as a whole. We donāt know how many other schools are out there or if all magic schools are boys only. Itās not impossible to think that there may be girls only or mixed schools out thereābut the NRC cast are the ones this game focuses on, so we view things from that perspective. Iād also like to add that we only see male students from other schools because of meta reasons: 1) there are limited game assets, so some details are accurately conveyed by the live 2D models, and 2) this is a joseimuke, a game with a predominantly male cast aimed at a target audience of women. It makes sense that there wouldnāt be many live 2D assets for random female mobs.
There isnāt any lore in-game or in other official materials which would imply that women are discriminated against in education or in the workforce. However, Twisted Wonderland at large seems to still perpetuate gender expectations and gendered traits as we understand them irl. There are some instances when the idea of women having traditionally feminine interests are mentioned: (Suitor Suit) Ace complains that his ex only liked romance and animal movies, disliked thrill rides, and preferred cute things and taking Magicam pics; (Birthday Boy) Cater also mentions his mother and older sisters having interests in making sweets and cute things. Additionally, as Anon mentions, in Endless Halloween Night, Silver shares the story of Mulan, who pretended to be a man to save her father from enlisting in the army. He told this tale to Jamil (not Leona!), who reacts with surprise when he learns that this capable warrior is a woman. At the same time, there are āmasculineā expectations vaguely alluded to: Deuce states he is the āmanā of his household, Epel of course worries about his manliness and sees Savanaclaw, the athletic dorm, as ācoolā, etc.
Of course, these gender norms are not pervasive nor are they the same everywhere in Twisted Wonderland. One extreme is demonstrated through Epel, who holds the most regressive beliefs prior to Vilās influence. This leads me to believe that Harveston is one of these areas that perpetuates these beliefsāand when you think about its population, it makes sense. Epel tells us that his hometown is largely elderly people, who are more likely to hold conservative worldviews compared to young people. The community, being small and located pretty far from nearby urban centers, is also exposed to fewer ideas that differ from what they perceive as their ānormā. These factors will naturally shape its residents and inform how they interact with and perceive others.
I actually think that Briar Valley would also be one of those areas with regressive gender norms for similar in-universe reasons as Harveston. Briar Valley is described to us as a region mainly populated by long-lived fae⦠meaning they are pretty old and more likely to be conservative. Not only that, but the area is very isolated and fae in general prefer to keep to their own kind. Briar Valley is also said to be opposed to change and new ideas and technology being introduced to their land. All of these factors suggest they would have more old-fashioned ideas about gender, not progressive ones. Meleanor and Maleficia may be widely respected and viewed as capable women, but I do not think it is fair to extrapolate how magically gifted monarchs of the Draconia bloodline are viewed to the governed population. It is more likely that they are the exception, not the rule. This better explains why Sebek and Silver, who are technically subjects of Briar Valley, are surprised to learn of a powerful princess. Their shock, as well as how Lilia describes human princesses as being meek and needing protection, also implies the usual gender norms. Given that humans seem to be the majority race in Twisted Wonderland, it means those gender expectations were predominant at the time.
The Sunset Savanna is the only country we know of at the moment where women are noted to be viewed differently. According to Leona, he ārespects womenā since the women back in his home country are physically stronger and stronger-willed than men. (This may be a reference to how irl lionesses do most of the hunting.) Itās not uncommon to see women in high-ranking warrior or guard positions because of this. This implies that the gender roles are somewhat reversed here; women are the ones expected to be strong, not men.
Slight tangent here: I donāt particularly subscribe to the idea that āstrongā women are somehow better or more deserving of praise than āweakā women. Itās a fallacy that I see perpetuated way too often in media. True feminism does not mean demonizing what is seen as traditionally āfeminineā, nor does it mean women can only be independent or strong by acting in traditionally āmasculineā ways. Feminism means not judging or holding back women from pursuing whatever it is they want to do, be it a career of their own, homemaking, or anything in between. Women can be strong and admirable no matter what they choose to do with their lives.
Okay, so Twisted Wonderland does operate on gender normsābut that does NOT inherently mean that Twisted Wonderland is a sexist hellscape. Gender discrimination is on a spectrum, and weāve yet to see any blatantly regressive demands be taken as anything of real merit in TWST. If anything, they get clowned on and told off as much as Sebek is for his anti-human sentiments. And, as Iāve pointed out earlier, Twisted Wonderland on the whole appears to accept and normalizes things that may not be widely accepted irlā namely, men in makeup or in traditionally feminine fashion. Thereās also many examples we can look to of regular women in power or jobs across the world of Twisted Wonderland.
We also need to remember that TWST was penned by people who also live in a society of gender norms, so itās expected for their lived experiences to also bleed into the worlds they create. It doesnāt make them bad people, it just makes them human. They write what they know and also play around with the ideas of different societiesāthose that skew in both directions (as we see with Harveston vs Sunset Savanna).
that comment about how you should not borrow grief from the future has saved me multiple times from spiraling into an inescapable state of anxiety. like every time i find myself thinking about how something in the future could go wrong i remember that comment and i think to myself: well i never know, it might get better. it might not even happen the way i think it will and if it does happen and it is sad and bad ill be sad about it then, when it happens. and itās somehow soo freeing
Also, I would like to add that Malleusās blatant disregard for the autonomy of others and fits of rage is DELIBERATE on his end. Being one of the top five mages in the entire world, I am sure that he KNOWS there is a large disparity between his power/social and the rest of the peers/subordinates etc. His sheer and utter confidence in his abilities to get what he wants and general disregard for others isnāt only an indicator of his awareness about this disparity, but is also a reflection of the abuses of his power AND social status as a whole.
In light of his age, imagine the amount of times he has repeated these mistakes despite others advice and criticisms against his choices. Only Ace has been able to overcome others general reverence and fear towards Malleus when it came to calling him out. He is not an innocent person who is ignorant about the ways of humanity verses faes, and is certainly not the innocent character the fandom (especially those who are infatuated by him) think he is.

***Standard disclaimer: In sharing my thoughts, I do not mean to disparage Malleus fans. Furthermore, me disliking him should not detract from your own enjoyment of the character. If you do not feel comfortable reading about this topic (ie critique of Malleusās character), then I encourage you to scroll on and to not engage with this post.***
My thoughts below the cut!
I do feel that, to some degree, the disregard for others and inappropriate fits of rage come from blatant ignorance (since Malleus did have a very isolated and sheltered upbringing). However, it's also hard for me to believe that in his 178 years of living that he was NOT told countless times by those around him (mostly Lilia and his grandmother, Maleficia) to wield his power and social status more tactfully than how he has. Did he take none of those lessons to heart??? What about the 2-3 years he spent living among the non-fae at NRC? Nothing from then too??
Regarding self-awareness of his strength and social status, Malleus has made it clear on more than one occasion that he stands above others. Right from his first appearance in the main story (in book 2), it's implied he's well aware of his position--so much so that he deliberately hides his identity from Yuu. He also cannot propose to Eliza in Ghost Marriage because he is the crown prince of a nation. Time and time again, Malleus's status is mentioned and it plays into his importance as the sole heir to Briar Valley. He must also know he is powerful, given that he is one of the top 5 strongest mages in the world and can perform incredible feats (like reassembling a stage and walking through Vil's poisonous miasma in book 5) like they're nothing. His grandmother and Lilia tell him the Draconias are powerful and shouldnāt use their magic to harm, but to help those they rule over. Yet he seems to have surprisingly few qualms when turning these powers against people who are only at a fraction of his power (Rook, his dorm mates, everyone in the Scalding Sands trip group, Ortho, etc.) or have no magic at all (remember when he attacked those civilians in Terror is Trending and the other Diasomnia students had to restrain him?). Malleus may be emotional in these moments, but the fact remains that he's making the deliberate, intentional choice to wield his magic in this way. He has the ability to hold himself back (as we see him refrain from fighting Rook in Malleus's PE Uniform vignette, only because he knows Rook is baiting him), but the vast majority of the time he fails to do this. For someone who is acutely aware of his power, you'd think he would... I don't know, keep a better leash on it? And what about his identity? So Malleus is concerned about Sebek insulting Leona (the prince of another country) but he ISN'T concerned about how his own fits of anger poorly reflect on himself, who is the CROWN PRINCE of a country??? Please make that make sense... Why is Malleus so selective š
I'm actually quite shocked at how little Malleus's pride and arrogance is pointed out; it's usually Leona who gets those labels even though Malleus is also just as arrogant, prideful, and confident in his own powers. Most of the time, I feel like I see Malleus being called "innocent". Maybe his negative traits on display get overlooked because TWST tries so hard to present Malleus to us as someone we are supposed to like (especially with how often they use his overpoweredness or loneliness is used as a punchline for jokes). Our interactions with Malleus are also so few and so short, particularly early in the main story, that fan project their own ideas about what he's like onto him and that forms a certain āimageā of him that may not be the same as how he actually is. Him being lonely makes it easy for fans to perceive him as desperate for company and even easier for fans insert themselves as his āspecialā friend or S/O to fill the void.
It's... quite ironic, really? Malleus says in Riddle's Suitor Suit vignettes that he is familiar with the concept of "noblesse oblige", which is the implied duty of the privileged and nobility to act gracefully towards those less privileged. Yet... he is sometimes overstepping "fae playfulness" or "teenage childishness/immaturity" and continuously creating situations which put people around him in danger (all of Endless Halloween Night, not holding back his attacks against the Magicam Monsters, all the times he let his temper get out of control, book 7 OB, etc.) When defending the extremes he took in book 7 by citing his status and his UM, Malleus has this to say, which is very telling of his lucidity: "Monitoring? Meddling? Heh, how silly. It's a king's duty to govern, is it not? I'm watching over you. To ensure no nightmares befall you in the fairy tales you now reside in... To ensure you have happy dreams that last forever!" It's implied that Malleus's grandma has told him since childhood that their line has powerful magic to protect their people's smiles--and here he is, overextending those words to people that aren't even his subjects, and twisting the meaning to justify his own brutal rule.
What I noticed is... Malleus is often so oriented on seeing the situation from his POV that he fails to consider those from any entity aside from himself. In Endless Halloween Night, he feels sorry for the ghosts who showed up late and were left out of the festivities because he can relate to them, so therefore he wants to make sure they are included. In book 7, Malleus fears his loved ones leaving and projects this fear onto everyone else so he feels right in being the one coming in to be their "hero" and grant them happy endings they never asked for. In his own Dorm Uniform vignettes, Malleus frames the circumstances as, "I wouldn't be mad if you did the same thing to me" instead of listening to his peers' complaints. He centers problems around himself (which admittedly is very frustrating to me), and this is how Malleus tries to understand and navigate the world. This gives me the impression that he has a very particular way of thinking and it's perhaps difficult for him to understand others, even with extensive pointers.
I truly believe Malleus is ignorant about humans and fae. That much matches up with what we know of his history. What I do NOT get is why he continues to remain ignorant when 1) he has spent a few years exposed to non-fae and their ways; even if this pales in comparison to the 175ish other years of his life, he should have some new basis for appropriate social interactions with other races, and 2) most of the major adult figures in his life are exposing to him he should consider others' perspectives and try to learn more about that which he is unfamiliar with. Malleus has so many opportunities to expand his horizons and get to know new people, but he seems to sit around and keep waiting for others take the initiative for him. But he could initiate too, so why doesn't he???? (He has shown he is capable of it, as he approaches Deuce to fix his virtual pet and chatting with Idia about the same pet in the main story; if not by himself, then Lilia can easily assist or invite him into activities such as the Silk City trip.) Even if Malleus fails to socialize in a way that's considered appropriate, at least that's something he can learn from and correct for next time... But why doesnāt he????????? If he did, it would sure help out with his inability to empathize with his peers and could even curb his temper (which would be seen as socially inappropriate). So why exactly does he seem to know so little and make so little effort to try and rectify this???? Why does he keep postulating that his word is above everyone elseās and then get upset when people donāt like him for this very alienating attitude? Aaaaah, it's a sad cycle to witness him devolve into again and again... š
P. S. Bless Ace for being the one character who still held it against Malleus for the fucked up āprankā he pulled in Endless Halloween Night (and then convincing everyone the misunderstanding was their faults for āattacking the ghosts firstā).
I was today years old when I learned that when you type āotp: trueā in AO3 search results it filters out fics with additional ships, leaving only the fics where your otp is the main ship
These aren't following any prompt in particular, these are just thoughts I had when I saw the guy hammin' it up and then turning on us.
Some of these headcanons are informed by fan art I've seen and discussions I've had with friends, while others are purely me.
Curiouser and Curiouser...
He calls people ālittle ladsā and ālittle ladiesā.
Fellow has a very noticeable laugh. Like, he grunts and snorts and has tears rolling down his cheeks. (He tends to laugh at othersā misery, thinking of it as āretributionā or āpaybackā for the injustices he has suffered himself.)
Bro shaves using a knife (yes, he shaves because he is a grown ass man) because razors are hella expensive.
He uses that cheap cologne and cakes it on THICK. This, in his mind, gives off the impression that heās a well-off and put-together individual you should tooootally trust.
Also the type of person that lays it on thick with his words. If heās trying to impress a date or something, heāll shower them with so many compliments it almost seems fake. But no, heās just the type to simp hard when he happens to be genuine š most of the time heās faking it thoughā
Heās very street smart, but in a way where he confuses hostile people by talking over them and acting overly friendly. They usually stuns them long enough for him and Gidel to skedaddle.
If he gets dumped, he'd be the pathetic whimpering boyfriend that begs for his ex to take him back. When they inevitably don't, he mopes all day about it.
He chain smokes and aggressively drinks as a coping mechanism on his bad days š and sometimes he gambles (like, on those scratch-off cards) hoping that he'll strike it rich and buy him and Gidel a better life...
Basically, he generally does not have his shit together but tries his best to pass like someone who does (and usually succeeds at it).
Fellow appears in public wearing his full suit, but at home (ie whatever ratty temporary housing their boss found for them before they move on to the next place) he just wears a T-shirt and lounges around in boxers (and sometimes socks with holes in them).
He uses those disposable eyeshadow wands that snap in half at the slightest bit of too much pressure. Fellow acts like the Claireās kid makeup he uses is the luxury stuff, but Vil can tell the pigmentation isnāt all there and thereās MAD fallout.
He may be broke AF and have his moments of emotional spiraling, but he has pretty decent budgeting skills. Fellow lives for sales and does extreme couponing to stretch their money as far as it will go.
He invests in other cost-saving methods like wearing shoes until the sole is literally flopping off and just adding water to residual soap in a pump bottle to make the soap "last longer".
Fellow is really good at cutting food (bread, beans) thin to conserve it. Yes, this is a reference to an old Mickey Mouse cartoonā
When he was younger, he had dreams of being an actor (and, more specifically, starring in musicals). That's why he's often humming, swinging around his cane, and/or whistling as he's on the prowl for idiots to suckerāthey're remainders of his thespian days before his dreams were crushed into itty bitty pieces.
Man looks like he'd be great at tap dancing.
Before his current gig, he tried a bunch of other scams including a MLM at one point to get by. His signature spell came in pretty clutch in those days too.
Fellowās not that good at reading or spellingāin fact, he was never a particularly strong student. (āI didnāt fail school!! The schools failed ME!!ā) Heās easily frustrated by academics and thinks there should be more hands-on and practical skills taught in learning institutions.
I think it's a given that he and Ruggie would be besties since they both want to eat the rich but I also think Fellow would kiss ass to Azul and then rage about how shitty + entitled Azul is (Azul reminds Fellow of his boss)š Scammers hate other scammers because they're both competing to scam the same people--
Even though Fellow is an asshole to most others (well, when heās not flattering them to lure them into a trap), heās always nice to Gidel and puts him first. If thereās ever a situation where theyāre short on something (clothes, food, etc), Gidel gets priority. This is why Gidel has a full outfit (even if parts are patches or mismatched) whereas Fellow himself has a glove that is so worn out thereās a hole in one of the pinkie fingers.
Fellow may not be blessed with a bounty of magic, but heās quick on his feet and good with words. Because of these skills, heās talented at spinning bedtime stories, which he often tells to Gidel to help him fall asleep on nights that are particularly cold and nasty.
Gidel still believes in Santy Claws and wishing upon stars, and Fellow doesnāt have the heart to tell him the truth. Heāll figure it out on his own one day, Fellow thinks. He just doesnāt want to be the one to ruin those childhood joys for him.
Playing pretend is another shared past time of theirs. It helps Fellow get into character before he goes off to swindle people, and it gives Gidel a way to express himself in spite of being mute. They have a routine they do together where Fellow pretends to be a doctor diagnosing a patient and Gidel takes down notes for him as his medical scribe. Yes, this is a Pinocchio referenceā
They actually have many more games they play (mainly because they cannot afford other forms of entertainment). Some of the games are clever ruses conjured by Fellow to teach Gidel survival tips and tricks: the who-can-make-their-piece-of-bread-last-longer game, hide-and-seek (from the authorities), etc.
For special occasions, Fellow saves up some money on the side to grant Gidel little luxuries, like a box of crayons to doodle with.
Gidel hugs Fellowās leg or waist to cheer him up when heās upset. He also hides behind Fellow when heās scared or feeling shy.
Heās just really attached to Gidel cuz they have no one else in this cruel world, just them against the world š He sees a lot of his younger self in the little boy⦠the opportunities lost because of their circumstances⦠āItās alright, Gidel. Leave it to Fellow-sama.ā
HELLO 𤔠I have come to you today with an analysis of Fellow Honest's motives and what they imply about the mages and non-mages in the world of Twisted Wonderland, as well as the state of magic education as it relates to one's social status.
It's a doozy, so let's get right into it!
***WARNING: Spoilers for Stage in Playful Land!!***
Fellow's resentment of the elite harkens back to something I've always suspected but also something that Twisted Wonderland has seldom gone out of its way to shine a harsh spotlight on. That "something" is the discrepancy between the "haves" and the "have-nots" in terms of magic. With the main setting of TWST being a private magic school, of course the perspective through which we view many events will be from this perspective as well... and that limits what we see and hear. Most of the NPCs we encounter (even the annoying ones, such as the Magicam Monsters from the first Halloween event) endlessly praise the NRC students just for attending a famous magic school. If we look closely though, weāll start to see cracks in the shiny rose-colored lenses (which, coincidentally, is how Fellowās UM name is written).
To begin with, we are told that only 10% of the human population (for the sake of argument, let's assume that most other races also have low magic rates) is even capable of magic to begin with. Of this 10%, the majority of people with the aptitude for magic only have enough to barely be able to lift a cup. In order to qualify for a prestigious magic school like Night Raven College or Royal Sword Academy, you'd literally have to be the cream of the crop and get lucky in terms of genetics. Magic cannot be learned by someone that was not born with the innate ability for it, and not everyone who is the child of a mage will be capable of magic themselves. This itself is already one HUGE barrier for entry. We now have more to consider.
Night Raven College is notably a private boarding school. This potentially means that students may need to pay a tuition fee for classes, room, and board. Perhaps this tuition doesn't exist, since NRC doesn't take applications but rather hand-selects its students. Additionally, NRC is based on a British school, and most European schools cost little to nothing to attend. However, it's hard to believe a school as fancy as NRC is a private institution that runs solely on the charity and goodwill of donors (though we do see Crowley happily accepting donations as well, specifically from the local town and from Kalimās family). Realistically speaking, Stuff Costs Money, and if you Want Stuff, you also Need Money. NRC is not raising these mages of the future out of the goodness of their hearts, NRC is raising these mages because there is profit and prestige to be gained from the endeavor. What if there are students who are picked to go but end up having to leave because they canāt afford it?? This point is just speculative though; I wonāt count it as actual evidence since there is no in-game lore which confirms tuition. We do know, however, that students do at least have to pay for their dorm uniforms, as Ruggie has mentioned he could not afford oneāhence why he wears a hand/me-down from Leona. We also know students are on their own when it comes to paying for their food, as both Ruggie and Deuce mention being low on cash in reference to buying meals/snacks. Buuuuut even if we discount that money is a factor that gatekeeps some selected students from attending or having the cash to just get by on a daily basis, what we cannot ignore is that money inherently puts some people ahead of others before magic schools even recruit them.
Because the majority of those in Twisted Wonderland are incapable of using magic, magic is not typically included in general education. This means that if you want your kid manifests magic and you want them to be "ahead of the curve", you'd need to seek out resources for magic training and education. Now, this could mean reading materials, private tutoring, or reaching out to mages you know of. The problem with all of these things is that they tend to require money and/or connections, which are things not everyone has access to. (Note: research has shown that money opens up and expands one's connections, which still puts the rich in an advantageous position compared to the less fortunate. There are also studies that show impoverished people who happen to have rich friends have a better chance of raising their own social standing just because of the doors and connections that rich friend can open for them.) Look at who in the main cast remarks on having formal magic training: literal royalty like Leona and the upper middle class like Riddle. Again, one could say that because schools like NRC appear to hand-pick students regardless of how much formal magic training they had prior to enrollment. However, the fact remains that it simply looks better to potential recruiters (using this blanket term because we don't know how magic schools besides NRC gets its students) and better prepares the child for magic school curriculum to get an early start on it.
Looking back at the 22 boys that make up the main cast, close to three-quarters or 75% of them come from at least upper middle-class backgrounds and quite a few could classify as wealthy:
Riddle's parents are both doctors, with Riddle's mom in particular being well-known and well-regarded in their home community.
Cater's dad is a banker; his position is high enough up that he constantly needs to relocate every so often (presumably to service their largest or most important firms).
Leona is a literal prince. Even if he isn't destined to be king, he still has access to the resources and wealth avaliable to a royal.
Azul's mom owns the most popular restaurant in the entire Coral Sea (have you seen how large the Coral Sea is on the world map???), and his stepdad is a lawyer.
The twins' family is said to be well-off; they are able to afford luxuries like fancy clothes and Mr. Leech stresses the importance of manner and presentation. He is implied to have business associates who are also well-off and would like to get in his good graces. (Popular fan speculation is that the Leeches are a crime family.)
Kalim is the heir to a massive family fortune and trading business.
Jamil, as Kalim's attendant, is also from a reasonably well-off family; they are compensated handsomely for handling the Asims.
Vil's father is an A-list celebrity, and Vil is also one himself.
We don't know the specifics of what Rook's family does, but it must be well-paying, as we learn in book 5 that the Hunts have villas all over Twisted Wonderland, as well as permissions for international travel via warp pads.
Idia and Ortho's family run a secret organization that researches blot. S.T.Y.X. is so secretive that basically only those in super high positions like Crowley and Leona would know about them. Let's also not forget that the Shrouds have ties to the Juniper Conglomerate and the Olympus Corp, which is a tech giant in the world of TWST.
Malleus is also a prince AND the crown heir to his kingdom. He is also one of the top 5 most powerful mages in the entire WORLD.
Lilia is a renown war general and a close friend of royalty.
Silver is Lilia's adopted son and is actually a prince himself.
Sebek's parents are dentists. They make mad money. His grandfather is also a respected knight that served alongside Lilia.
Notice how all the dorm leaders are upper middle class or higher; the vice dorm leaders have ONE middle class person (Trey); in Playful Land, Trey confesses to living a comfortable life.
We can try to argue all we like that NRC doesn't discriminate based on social status for their selections, but if that's the case then why are so few of the main cast from impoverished or low-income families? Only Ace, Trey, and Trey count as squarely middle class. Ruggie is the only example we have of someone from a very low socioeconomic status rising up to be among "elites". The other example is Deuce, who comes from a single parent household and has implied they don't have a lot of money (for example: how the VDC/SDC earnings will help out his family). (Epel is kind of a ??? case because depending on where in the story you are, his family could be in financial trouble or not; in book 5, they imply his entire village is having difficulties selling product until Vil promotes Harveston apples on his Magicam.) Maybe it's unfair to say that 22 students out of 800ish is representative of the makeup of the entire NRC student population (or represents the composition of all magic schools), but the single digit representation of low-income students is also true of real-life elite schools. They are private schools for a reason; it naturally gatekeeps who is and isn't "allowed" to attend, leading to the majority of its students being members of the elite.
Another thing to consider is legacy students. This term refers to the increased likelihood of people being accepted into a school if they had a relative that also attended that school. We know of two instances of this happening: Ace's brother and Sebek's brother also went to and graduated from Night Raven College. Ace even makes a remark during his sorting ceremony that he ended up in the same dorm as his older brother "as expected". If magic aptitude is genetic, then perhaps it makes sense to recruit from the same families--but again, this is inherently restrictive, as you would continuously be culling from the same pools generation after generation.
Back on the topic of bloodlines and family, what about Kalim, who has many other siblings? There will be no shortage of Asim mages going to NRC just because of legacy. And speaking of Kalim, consider instances where rich families are able to bribe faculty (lookin' at YOU, Crowley) or donate a large sum to get their kid ahead or to be given priority over others that may be more qualified than them (RIP Jamil). To continue off that point, NRC itself is structured as a "dog eat dog" world. Those with inherently more magical ability have the right to trump over others. You can duel and lose your dorm seat to a more powerful mage, even if you trump them in terms of merit or leadership qualities. Students feel a sense of duty to obey those who have bested them in battle (ie Epel's servitude to Vil). Everyone fears Malleus. Your magical power is respected above all else.
Attitudes surrounding magic have notably shifted from fear of it several hundreds of years ago (around the human-fae war, back when āwitchā and āwizardā were used in a derogatory sense) to recognizing it for its strengths and actively seeking it or granting some favoritism to those who have it. There is, in fact, now class discrimination in based on whether or not you can use magic. We got an early instance of this as early as book 1 of the main story, when Riddle insults Yuu for their upbringing and their inability to use magic. Itās something that clearly rubs Ace, who had a magicless father the wrong way, and he stands up for Yuu. There are other subtle hints about this divide sprinkled throughout the lore. For example, Ruggie has a voice line which he indicates that the slums where he comes from doesnāt produce many magic users. Again, recall that magic runs in bloodlines. This could potentially allude to a past where those without magic were forced into lower income neighborhoods, which results in pockets like Ruggieās hometown with a high population of magicless individuals living in poverty. This doesnāt appear to be a large scale issue (perhaps its only an isolated case?), but this is worth paying attention to.
This could all translate into the professional world too. Some jobs are entirely locked behind magic (ie you just cannot do them or pursue them if you don't have the magical ability for it). Some jobs DO require magic (ie medical mages like Riddle's parents, magic police force officers, technomantic inventors, etc) and probably additional training that goes with it. As a result, I'd imagine that these magic-intensive jobs pay quite a bit more. There may also be overall more job opportunities for those capable of magic, since magic is so much more efficient than doing things by hand. It means more retention of wealth and/or more upward mobility for the few impoverished that are able to enter magic schools. (This is, of course, not including the few and far between cases of regular people who get rich in select industries, such as Kalimās father.) Recall too that NRC requires its students to take internships during their 4th years, many placements being with very prestigious groups and organizations such as pro-sports teams, labs, tech giants, etc. Being able to attend a prestigious school with connections grants those elite students even more opportunities than the average person.
Then think about what this means for people who fall short of these standards that these magic schools set. We actually have examples of them in book 5 of the main story: when Deuce and Epel are reconciling on the beach, a bunch of delinquents from another school come along and start checking out Deuceās borrowed magical wheel. Through the NPCsā exchange, we learn that one of them has enough magic to power a magical wheel, but not enough to so much else. This NPC also couldnāt keep up in class and dropped out of a magic school. He then becomes insulted when Deuce implies he is āa beginnerā, so this is obviously a very sore spot for him. Additionally, consider how magic can be used to oppress and lord power over others. Deuce himself is guilty for summoning cauldrons to crush rival delinquents in fights back in Clock Townāeven if those delinquents lacked magic themselves. Similarly, Epel is implied to use magic to gain an upper hand against those that bullied him back home. This all implies a social divide between those with magic and those without, and begs bigger questions.
What happens to the ones that donāt make it? The ones that get left behind? The ones without the magic to make it ābigā? This is the root of Fellowās anger; heās mad at a system that cast people like him (someone with very little magic) and Gidel (a non-mage) aside. They donāt get the opportunity to make better futures for themselves. Theyāre looked down on by high-up institutions that basically tell them theyāre not good enough.
Knowing all of this, the deck appears to be stacked against the poor and non-mages. Itās no wonder why Fellow is so mad.
THIS ACTUALLY HARKENS BACK TO WHAT ROLLO SAID IN 5-2 OF GLORIOUS MASQUERADE⦠"When you have too little [magic], you're resentful. And when you have plenty [of magic], you're arrogant. You can never content yourselves." The NRC boys are arrogant (this is the side of the story weāve always known due to seeing the world mainly from their perspective). They are the āhavesā. But everyone else??? Theyāre scrounging for the scraps. Fellow falls into thar former category; he IS the guy thatās resentful because of his lack of magic and how something he cannot control has already determined where he and Gidel will stand in life no matter how hard they work. They can never hope to rise out of poverty, and thereās nothing they can do about it. That must be soul-crushing.
When Fellow praises the NRC boys in that overly exaggerated way, heās obviously being shady and facetiousāhowever, there is also a kernel of truth behind this behavior. Most other NPCs weāve met have spoken about the NRC boys favorably just because of their affiliation with a prestigious school. Itās the same way people might be impressed if you walked around in an Ivy League branded hoodie or something. People automatically associate you with the schoolās shiny and exclusive reputation, and thus assume you are also intelligent, talented, etc. Then, in the same way being constantly put on a pedestal like this might result in the students getting swelled heads, this only further feeds into the NRC kidsā egos. They so privileged they donāt even recognize it. And that makes Fellow fucking FUME.
Look back at Fellow's dialogue. He is constantly mentioning the prestige of the school the boys go to, or adding on extra compliments about their status and skills. He's ass-kissing to his boss, who is also wealthy or part of the upper class, then insults the boss once he hangs up. Fellow is always in a position where he HAS to be subservient to the upper class in order to make his money and get by, and he finds that entirely unfair. Imagine having to simper and placate people you absolutely despise and blame for your problems every day, people who are gorging themselves on luxuries, coasting by in life, taking everything they have for granted while you get by on penniesāthat has to get frustrating.
I want to briefly mention here that, in addition to praising the NRC students to high heaven, Fellow also talks down his own skills. He cheerfully calls himself a loser and says that no matter how much he trains, he could never reach their caliber of magic. Yes, Fellow is exaggerating to get the kids to think theyāve won, but I also have to wonder if heās parroting the same phrases he was told long ago, from people who doubted him and never thought heād make it. If thatās the case, then I get the sense that Fellow is in a way āreclaimingā his autonomy and power by adopting those same cruel words and using them as a strength. He admits to being āweakā but is also proud of the fact that he can utilize his magic along with his natural charisma to get a leg up over others. It further fuels his new belief that going to an elite school doesnāt matter, itās practical skills that will serve you well.
Okay, back to talking about his shitty work situation! Fellowās employer clearly doesnāt treat him with decency. They berate him, make unreasonable demands, act impatient, etc. They are a typical depiction of a toxic workplace and boss. This can also be read as shorthand for the relation between the rich and the poor, and how that may have shaped (or worsened) Fellowās views on others of the privileged class. He makes many assumptions about the NRC students without really getting to know them, calling them entitled brats. Why? Because these descriptors likely apply to the higher-ups Fellow has always slaved away for. This, in combination with his own experiences in being rejected from magic academia, has created a person who feels trodden on by society and by the upper echelons who run it and benefit off the system.
Fellow himself is the perfect example of someone who was failed by said system. He has dialogue stating that he was never given the chance to learn because his magic was not considered strong enough. Still, he tried to make an effort to earn that chance among to elites and to study among them. Fellow was rejected, ridiculed, and told he had āforgotten his placeā, what he had been born into. There were expectations he couldnāt meet, and so Fellow was thrown away like a broken toy. He has failed not because he didnāt try, but because he was denied the opportunity to begin with. This is where is rage stems from. Fellow despises the students of those same kinds of institutions who kicked him down, students who donāt realize how fortunate they are for their educations and will likely continue to perpetuate the system.
What, then, does that means for his signature spell, which is closely tied to oneās identity? Letās take a magnifying glass to it. As previously mentioned, the name for Fellowās spell is written as āRose-Tinted Dreamā, but it is said out loud as āLife is Funā. The chant for it is, āCome on to the theaterā (notably said in English rather than in Japanese). And⦠well, the whole UM in of itself is one big cruel joke given his circumstances now.
I think this spell is representative of a young Fellow still full of hopes and dreams, looking forward to studying at a magic school. But then those dreams are shattered and he has to commit terrible crimes to survive day-to-day, and he seems to have given up on his dreams. He even goes so far as to protect Gidel from having the same hopes he once did, telling Yuu to not put silly ideas in his head when Gidel expressed curiosity about school. At the same time, he delights in crushing the hopes of those he deems his enemies (stating that he wanted to betray Kalim to āteach him a lessonā about how cruel the world is). Fellow knows the truth: that life isnāt fun, that it will disappoint you and will put you down. His actions are very cowardly as wellāhe uses tricks and deception, he runs away from his problems instead of properly addressing them, the NRC students remark on his lack of pride. Fellow has had to throw away so much to scrape by. Yet his UM symbolizes someone brimming with hopeāso perhaps itās a UM he manifested when Fellow still thought he had a chance?? And then people made fun of him for it being so weak?? Alternatively, maybe he didnāt get his UM until after his dreams were crushed so heās looking back on those nostalgic days of blissful ignorance with rose-colored lenses (which is, again, maybe why his UM magic name is written as āRose Tinted Dreamā). A UM that is a reflection of oneās true self, yet that same identity is one that has been forced to be discarded. Thatās the reason why, despite all the swindling and scamming, I donāt think Fellowās enthusiasm for fun is a lie. Thatās the one ārealā part of him, but even thatās been repurposed to help him live on scraps, something innocent twisted š and thatās really sad to think aboutā¦
But also??? You could argue that Fellow still has a little bit of that lost inner child and hope left in him. He tries to defend Gidelās understanding of the world and has goals of starting his own school despite how poorly he originally spoke about these institutions. (So Fellow does appear to care about children and their futures.) He also has a childish streak despite being an adult, demonstrated by his use of cowardly tactics, taunting kids, and abruptly quitting his job to then destroy his workplace. Fellow himself states that he ājust tries to live a free and fun lifeā, this his pursuit of money and pleasure. This could all play into being what defines Fellow and thus his UM. It embodies a spirit of playfulness event when he has been crushed under the weight of an unglamorous life.
Iāve heard people saying that while Rollo is Idiaās dark mirror and Fellow is Ruggieās. They have similar backstories but ultimately their fates are different and left the former two down far more sinister paths. Just as Rollo is an Idia that turned his anger outward instead of inward, Fellow is Ruggie had he not been given a chance to receive an education to elevate his social status and job prospects. Fellow and Ruggie both cling to rich, powerful benefactors/bosses and do their dirty work to get on byāa big difference is that Leona, while he does also work Ruggie to the bone, also has some conscience. Something else to consider is that while Ruggie prioritizes making a life for himself by studying and securing a stable, well-paying job, Fellow is focused moreso on the accumulation of wealth itself (as he suggests to Kalim heāll take a bribe to let him go free and quits when there is no longer money to be gained from his boss). Both donāt really care how they get their money (even if it is by dirty means), but ultimately Ruggieās way of making cash is more sustainable in the long run. Yet Fellow ultimately realizes the importance of school deep down despite constantly denying it when the NRC students tell him of it. Fellow is in denial because thatās the only way he can cope and justify his lifestyle. Heās confused when finally confronted with students who are his ideal of āhappy and freeā, even when theyāre in an educational system that he views as shackling people into strict roles. The way he laments about not being able to go to school is also very reminiscent of an adult mourning a lost or unfulfilling childhood, which is quite a depressing scenarioā¦
Fellow is the one that got the short end of the stick in life. Ruggie met Leona, and Leona technically uplifted him in his endeavors, tutored him into getting decent grades and giving him hand-me-downs and money in exchange for his services. Fellow never had that kind of support system, he was just insulted and bullied into giving up and had to find an alternative way to keep himself going š
Personally, I think Fellow could also be a dark mirror to Kalim, no?? They exist on opposite ends of a social spectrum. Kalim has everything and Fellow had nothing. Whatās more, Kalim is still wide-eyed and trusting. He is the only one willing to try words instead of fighting him and instantly labeling him as the enemy. Meanwhile, Fellow has become bitter because of how the world has betrayed him. He wants to take that trust Kalim has and show him how cruel everything truly is. Why is he fixated on that? Why even offer in the first place if he never intended on going through with it? Why does he want to rub it in Kalimās face in particular? Maybe itās because Kalim seems rich and dumb, as Fellow claims, but maybe itās because there is envy there. Sure, Fellow is upset about Kalim being a sheltered brat that faces no challenges in life, but I also feel like heās jealous that Kalim can still afford to think this way. That he can still afford to be cheerful, that he can still be a dreamer. Fellow was alluded to be like that onceābut he canāt be like that anymore, not when he has to look out for himself and Gidel.
Side note, another comparison! Recall that Kalimās Oasis Maker is also a UM that uses a little bit of magic. However, Kalim does not know of many creative ways to use his spell, as there is no real reason to since his home country has lots of canals and irrigation. He therefore deems his UM as pretty useless. Fellow meanwhile has what most consider a weak UM but he fully utilizes it to his advantage and pairs it well with his natural charm to maximize its effects. He had to develop these skills because he was in pressing circumstances in which they would benefit him. This contributes to the āmirrorā theme between the two.
Thinking about it, itās ultimately Kalimās words that convince Fellow to turn on his employer. (The other bots certainly wore Fellow down and planted the seeds of doubt, but itās Kalim that I believe fully resonates with Fellow.) He can so happily talk about why he loves school, even though he doesnāt do well at it (something I presume is also true of Fellow, since he is lacking in tons of magic). Itās not said in a particularly articulate manner, but itās so candid in its presentation. Kalim is relating to him based on similar skillset (or lack thereof) and sharing fond memories of his time at school, reviving the hopeful ālost childā in Fellow. Kalim is probably the first wealthy person in a long time that was friendly, kind, and supportive to him. And here he is, reassuring Fellow his dreams are still possible, to not give up. Thatās the final nail that allows Fellow to be āhonestā with himself and his inner child. Itās what leads to that slew of irresponsible actions at the end of the event (letting people free, blasting the amusement park, driving a sinking ship, etc.).
At the end of Stage in Playful Land, we see that Fellow never really let that childlike side of him fully die. (It seems to have been concealed under a desire for money and appeasing his boss.) He shares his dream of creating his own great school to give educational opportunities to non-mages and mages with low magical reserves like Gidel and himself, a school that teaches practical life lessons. He wants to promote his own ideals and to change the system he hates from the inside out. This was never communicated to us before most likely because Fellow had renounced those ideas in favor of blind hatred and a lack of faith in the world and those that dominate it.
Fellow also acknowledges that life may be even more difficult for him and Gidel going forward, as now they lack the money for even food and no longer have jobs. Furthermore, they need to worry about their ex-employers coming after them for what theyāve done. Even so, Fellow faces it all with a smile and reassures everyone that they can transfer or visit to play⦠āon this shining stage called lifeā. He and Gidel are able to walk away with their whimsy preserved, and can still be that which theyāve always wanted to be: dreamers.
All of this is to say that Rollo was right all along about magic, he never missesā
