Last week I had the pleasure to visit Athens one more time after 3 years. As a pure Stambouliotte (native of the city of love & hate: Istanbul) my eyes searched for ‘some changes’. And look what I found: none. The only changes I found were some little ones which were all about technology and some renovations.
Honestly this is the main reason I love Athens; Its historic identity is so strong and powerful that the kitch of the modern days can not overcome! It’s a vibrant but slow spirited city with all the facilities and attractions that you may expect to survive and to enjoy your urban life. Its marvelous historic monuments are still the main actors of the city and it is something which I really admire.
This time I wanted to spend more time in the historic center of Athens and walk around so we decided to stay at the very heart of Athens, at Plaka neighborhood. We chose to stay at Divani Acropolis to be as close as possible to Acropolis. Beside its great location another plus of this hotel is that you may have a room with one of the most beautiful view of the world: Acropolis of Athens at night! But of course, if you prefer to take a more affordable room, you may enjoy the same magical view on the rooftop bar-restaurant of the hotel. As we could reach everywhere we wanted with ease, we were satisfied with the location of our hotel. Just for your information: the minimum taxi fee in Athens is 5 euro.

At Plaka, if you avoid some ‘obviously touristic restaurants’ you may enjoy a nice meal with a moderate budget. In this trip, for dinner I’ve been to a classic; Athens Hilton Hotel’s rooftop restaurant ‘Galaxy Restaurant-Bar” where you may enjoy grills or a sushi menu while gazing at the Athenian city scape. Another night I wanted to try a restaurant at Port of Pireaus, which I was hearing from friends; ‘Papaioannou’.

Dinning so close to the sea reminded me of the Bosphorus. Fresh fish, mezzes and the dessert were all luscious.
As we the Turks and Italians can not live without our homeland coffees, Greece was being too generous to us by offering us in its every corner, Turkish coffee (single, without sugar) and Espresso (double with cold milk beside). In central Athens, on the slopes of Acropolis a bakery I stoped by to buy some delicious κουραμπιέδες (greek cookies - kurabiye in turkish) years ago, now has a coffee corner too. If you are addicted to Turkish/Greek coffee like me, you can have the best one while having the freshly baked greek bakeries. They also have tasty easy sandwiches. takisbakery.com
I did not miss the chance to visit my main intereset by my ph.d thesis, Byzantine and Christian Museum. It is so incredible that even thought I visited it many times through years, it can still surprise me by the richness of its collection and the beauty of its objects. At each visit I have a new favorite one...
Acropolis Museum for me is always a dream come true. I saw some new nice museographic and scenografic progress. As a museologiste, every time I visit this museum, I feel that Greeks did all with great respect and love for their patrimonio. The only thing which is sad that Greece is still fighting to get back its history and is perfectly equiped to receive and exhibit them in the place where they belong. I hope we can have the beautiful news soon.

Another thing I love about Athens is its weather. In the middle of September, the weather was still warm and welcoming. (Sometimes even too hot specially if you climb Acropolis in the middle of the day) So if you are planning to visit Athens in late September to avoid the crowd and extreme heat, know that you can also splash down onto the turquoise blue of the Athenian Riviera. The southern suburbs, Glyfada, Vougliagmeni, Vari etc. have the best beaches to give you the last sun kisses of the perishing summer season. So if you have time, save few days more to stay there!
They are only 30 minutes away from the center. So after spending 3 days at central Athens finally we moved to the south. We wanted to have an easy access to the beach and spend the last days of the summer in peace, swimming and relaxing. For its easy access to its private beach we decided to stay at Divani Apollon Palace & Thalasso at Kavouri, Vougliagmeni.

In the south for dinner I did not miss the chance to stop by my favorite restaurant by the sea; Ithaki. Salt crusted dorade, ekmek and its classy ambiance were all awesome. The big surprise was our hotel’s restaurant Mythos. Food was delicious and specially the fact that you have only 1 meter of sandy beach between you and the sea was beyond beautiful and it made our evening dreamy. At our last night we went to another classic, Moorings. The service and the food were top. As it is a cheerful place with high music and young crowd, you may also enjoy your night on place after your dinner.

On the way back I realized that Athens Airport was expanded. I don’t know if it was really necessary but it is sure that staff and the facilities are not ready for this bigger airport. On the new part, at duty free there were only 2 cashiers operating, with huge ques in front of them and it was not really possible to buy something without missing your flight.
Finally, Athens is always Athens and it has the magic of those cities which are touching directly to the soul and once you have it in the heart, it is not possible anymore to not come back one more time. Already looking forward to be back! ♥️
