I forgot to post this yesterday but I swear I was productive. I finally found a great CEFR level test for French so I took it and I didn’t really get the result I was hoping for, but that’s only motivation to work harder! I also got some more vocab and grammar notes done.

I thought I would join this productivity challenge to keep me on track with my language learning as well as helping me create good study routines while preparing for my first year in college. Today, I worked on some french, copying down some vocab and creating a key that I’ll use when making my language journal and flashcards.

In general, feminization of each animal in Spanish and French is pretty simple (see the end of the post for further explanation). *Note that “good boy/girl!” is not really used in Spanish and French to address dogs the way it is in English. They usually just say “good dog”.
**In Spanish, most animals can be feminized by replacing “el” with “la” (or “un” with “una”) and adding an “-a” at the end of the word, or by replacing the last vowel with “-a”. So, if you have a female cat, you can call her “una gata” instead of “un gato”. A female dog would be “una perra”.
**In French, most animals can be feminized by replacing “le” with “la” (or “un” with “une”) and adding an “-e” at the end of the word. Usually, the last consonant will have to be doubled as well. ***Don’t refer to someone’s pet fish as “el pescado”. That’s the word for fish that you eat. It would be like calling someone’s pet pig “pork” or someone’s pet cow “beef”.
****Like “el agua”, “el ala” is actually a feminine word that uses the article “el” simply because it sounds better. For example, if you wanted to talk about a bird’s red wing, you would refer to it as “el ala roja”.
what tips would you give to someone who wants to learn a new language, or continue learning a language over the summer break?? any apps or websites, or ways to stay motivated?
Learning a new language or continuing learning is honestly something I struggle with simply because of my experience with bad teachers, BUT I can still give you some tips on what I’ve done to stay motivated so far.
Find a language you are passionate about!! If you’re burnt out on what you’re learning, find a new language to learn. It’s not ideal to start back in square one, but it’s okay to do so!
Make flash cards! Everyone recommends this, but you can make a game out of what you’re learning. If you’re on the go, I recommend downloading Tinycards. Since it’s owned by Duolingo, they have sets premade for your target language.
Watch videos. This has helped a lot with learning a new language for me. You can either watch educational videos where you’re being taught grammar or vocab or you can watch videos of people speaking in your target language.
Interact with the language! Watch movies, listen to music, etc. Find different genres you might not enjoy in your native language and try them your target language! You never know what new content you come across that you enjoy.
Google Translate is not your enemy. It’s okay to use it. It’s not what people want to hear, but it’s ok to use if you’re struggling with how to pronounce a word or if there’s a word you simply just don’t know.
Pace yourself. Work on your target language at least 15 minutes a day especially for new learners. It sounds daunting, but practice makes for motivation.

YouTube (Use this to learn the alphabet and numbers. Duolingo seems to not understand “beginner” means you’re a beginner.)

hello! as you probably have guessed, i am hosting a 100dop challenge! here’s the general info about this challenge:
what is the 100dop challenge?
100dop = 100 days of productivity. basically, this challenge is about being productive for 100 days. typically, being “productive” means studying, but you can be productively decluttering/blogging/etc for 100 days as well!
why should i take up this challenge?
for me, i’m taking on this challenge because firstly, i have a whole lot of upcoming tests so i’ll be studying anyway, and secondly, i want to stop slacking and mindlessly browsing tumblr. this challenge can definitely help me be more consistent in keeping up with my academics.
some other reasons why you should definitely join:
- studying wouldn’t be such a chore in the future - you will be utilising your time wisely - you can make new friends!

University Tips:
Keep a planner
Keep a calendar
Look at them often
Check emails often
Look over the syllabus for each class before and after the class, or just on the weekend and mark assignments and tests in your planner/calendar
Sit in the front row of class. You’ll pay more attention and your profs will remember your face
Never miss class
Visit your professors’ office hours. Monthly [if not weekly]. No matter how scary they might seem, they are on your side and want you to succeed.
Do readings and such before class. Review your notes before and after each class.
Have a dedicated study time and place. Use it only for studying and have everything you need with you. Turn off your phone and your wifi if possible when studying.
Keep lists. Write down your priorities, shopping lists, deadlines, things you want to be involved in.
GPA doesn’t matter as much as you think it does. But, it matters a lot when it’s low, because GPA is an indicator of hard work, not intelligence. Employers want to see that you work hard.
Students who claimed not to study and still got an A lied or cheated. Period.
Not everyone parties like in the movies. Seriously.
You don’t have classes 8 hours a day, but you should still be putting in that much work every day. For every hour of class, spend .5-3 hours outside of class studying. It varies widely, find what works for you.
Take handwritten notes in class.
Make use of your resources. Office hours? Go to them. Supplemental Instruction? Go to it. Tutoring? Take advantage of it. Study groups? Yes. Learning communities? Join them.
Keep your stuff organized [computer files, folders, notebooks, desk, etc.]
If you’re the type to procrastinate a lot, it might help to be more involved so that you’re forced to work during your down time.
Your desk is only for studying. Keep clutter and decorations to a minimum.
Sleep. 7-9 hours each night. You’ll be more productive and actually remember the stuff you’re paying thousands of dollars to learn.
Keep a list of goals, priorities, motivations, accomplishments, etc.
Go to counselling services. Anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem are the top three things that will KILL your grades.
Take care of yourself. Wash your hands, take vitamins, sleep, and drink water. Being sick or overworked will kill your productivity.
The university will pressure you to find a career, internship, etc. Explore your options. Relax. You don’t have to have your whole life figured out RIGHT NOW. Instead, use the resources they give you to help you explore and develop yourself.
Have friends and a support network. Live on or near campus. The more you feel a sense of belonging, the more likely you are to succeed academically and graduate.

Être fleur bleue
Literally “to be blue flower.”
Means “to be romantic and sentimental,” maybe even overly so, and also a little naive. Could be translated as being mushy, but has a gentler connotation. When talking about a person, refers to their personality.
“Elle rêve au grand amour, elle est un peu fleur bleue.” (She dreams of finding the one, she’s a little too sentimental.)

This fall I’ll be a freshman in college double majoring in American Sign Language and Theatre Stage Management.
