It’s not like RR can go back and re-write the books and make them about the racism Shane faced or the trauma of Ilya’s mother’s suicide (or any serious issue.) The books would’ve never been published if they focused on those things. And Rachel Reid is not the kind of writer I think anyone really wants to be writing thoughtful in-depth tomes about the subtleties of adult diagnosed autism, the status of LGBTQ rights in Putin’s Russia, anti-Asian racism in Canada in the 90s-2000s or the lifelong effects of childhood trauma and its impact on adult relationships. She’s a romance author and a hockey fan. Don’t expect more from her. You’ll just be disappointed.

People keep acting like everyone is expecting some sociopolitical or psychological thesis. You know what, everything you talked about WAS done well in the show with very little change.

We’re not expecting much here. Just a little respect would be nice. Or, maybe don’t write the discrimination, stereotype and negative experiences queer people experience and call it a happy ending. If she can’t pay even an ounce of respect to these topics, maybe she shouldn’t touch them.

Also, for a romance writer, it’s crazy how many readers end up hating one or both of her romantic protagonists. Just look at any book review site and see the amount of hate aim at Shane. Just look at how much of an asshole she made Ilya look like in TLG, and how many people think it’s a toxic relationship where he doesn’t even care about Shane.

I'm starting to think it would have been better if RR just completely ignored Shane's race and wrote him the exact same way she wrote her white protagonists because she viewed him as basically white with a different complexion. Like that is a horrible way to write a minority, just literally treat them as a non-minority then change the gender/ethnicity/gender identity/sexuality. But by doing so she probably would have actually done better by Shane and respected more of his struggles (and nothing would have changed on how she thinks his race impacts him)

You know what, a lot of people are starting to wonder the same. Maybe shitty representation is even worse than no representation.

Every POC has seen work place discrimination happen to ourselves or our friends and family. Getting passed over for deserved promotions, not getting paid what we’re worth and being negatively stereotyped are super commonplace still. Whenever something bad happens, like mass layoffs, POCs are always at higher risk. These are things we live with every day.

Even if we look past all the crap like how Shane has experienced no trauma, everyone talking about how he had it so easy in Montreal while Ilya was the one making big sacrifices in Ottawa. It’s crazy to see a POC queer athlete like Shane work that hard to arrive at the top of their game, only to get traumatically outed and bear the worst consequences of homophobia out of anyone. He’s the only queer character to get that big of a hit to his reputation, lose his leadership position and have to take a huge pay cut. Then all of his concerns are totally minimized and dismissed by his own partner. And we’re told that it’s a happy ending because he gets a husband now.

Is this the fairytale romance ending POCs are supposed to be happy about?

—people don’t care if you have fidget toys on your desk they just want to play with them

—try to go to bed BEFORE the existential ennui kicks in

This is all GREAT. I turned 40 last week, so permit me to add what I learned in my 30s:

keep on not working for startups

sometimes there comes a point where the thing (fandom, hobby, friendship, romantic relationship) you loved no longer brings you joy. And that's okay. Try to mourn the loss, take joy in the memories, and don't burn any bridges in case ten years go by and you find yourself back in that fandom/hobby/relationship again

it turns out that (ugh) moderate regular exercise is (spit) good for you. The sooner you make it part of your life, the easier it'll be

related: if you throw yourself into a new exercise regime too hard and too fast, without stopping to rest or consider whether a particular move is good for you ... well, shoulder injuries are painful and consults with orthopedic surgeons are expensive

there may come a time when your digestive system is too fragile for ibuprofin. I'm sorry

one day you're gonna wake up and realise you no longer give any fucks about some things that used to bother you

"loving yourself" is less of a feeling and more of an action. you can start doing it any time and it will make your life better and better as you go on

this will happen incrementally - be patient

along those lines, if you haven't started making an active effort to quit shit-talking yourself, suck it up and do it

no, shut up. do it. "but it's haaaaard!" don't care. do it.

whether you like it or not, you are mortal and you need to go to the doctor for an annual checkup

stretch regularly - your future self will thank you

at some point you will encounter people much younger than you arguing passionately and incorrectly about history you personally remember and experienced

this will be infuriating and annoying

otoh, most other things just... will not matter to you as much

at some point you will shift from wanting to go out to being like "eh" and deciding to stay in. this is okay.

you will have absolutely no idea what The Youth are talking about and you will not care

but if you keep your mind open to new ideas you'll never be irrelevant

your company still doesn't love you - don't give them more than they pay you for

get a fucking hobby, especially a hobby that involves physically creating/handling something and/or moving your body in physical space. it will do you more good than you can imagine

with all seriousness and sincerity, i think hudson williams is one of the few people that i could say an intelligent and brilliant person since i saw him rose to fame. he's articulate in the way he express his thoughts and interests and doesn't fail to appreciate and admire everyone who has influenced him in his life. he touches people with his words and eventually by his genuine charm as a person who's full of whimsy and passion. he's unapologetically witty, wholesome, and nerdy. connor and the other hr cast have talked about how hudson is literally the most wonderful and confident and eloquent person in the room they've shared moments with and that alone speaks volume. and i couldn't give a fuck or two to whatever his white "friends" say, inside jokes or outside jokes or whatever the hell you-wanna-call-it-joke, because nothing in this world could ever reduce him to something they'd throw at him. i mean yeah, he's weird and chaotic and annoying but he's also classy and amazing and admirable at the same fucking time. that's just hudson williams for you and me. and he fucking loves shane hollander!!! y'all he loves that little boy so much that he was able to give him life while playing him that made the show even more meaningful and beautiful. he's passionate and committed to his craft and i hope he never changes.
