Legendary fantasy artist John Blanche has died. He is known mostly for his long association with Games Workshop, where he served as art director and created many of the iconic images that shaped the Warhammer and 40K worlds. He was capable of working in diverse styles, but much of his art and his own creative miniature conversions made his name synonymous with the "grimdark" aesthetic, mixing elements of moody gothic architecture and body horror with a limited color palette.

He also contributed to GW's UK edition of Dungeons & Dragons, Fighting Fantasy and Sorcery! books, and other books and album covers. Wombat Games recently published an authorised biography, Blanche: The Rise of Grimdark. A skirmish game, John Blanche's En Garde, is in development with a setting and visual style based on his art.

For those familiar with the classic shounen-ai manga “Kaze to Ki No Uta” by master Keiko Takemiya…. What if Serge and Gilbert escaped to Switzerland instead of Paris? After a few years pass, Auguste Beau finally tracks the pair down. But instead of a bishi-boy Gilbert, Auguste finds Bara Gilbert (who finally hit puberty and worked hard on the farm). Auguste would be horrified of the hair and muscles–just do a complete 180 without saying a word. I go onto the political side of Tumblr, and find someone claiming that moderate business unions and Buttigieg Liberals in power will be more effective than any revolutionary action. I lose patience and scroll away. Then I hit a post under that of someone claiming the Khmer Rouge were legitimate revolutionaries, and have the same reaction. The more times I go to it, the more times it happens, meaning that all I see on my feed are tankies, liberals, tankies, liberals, tankies, liberals, the occasional MAGAt reprobate, and more tankies and liberals. Can't we hit some kind of middle ground?

Is TLT anything like Book of the New Sun?

I don't think I can give you a definative answer because I have not read Book of the New Sun, but I'd probably err on the side of "probably not."

Catholicism and faith in general is a big theme, so they have that in common from the brisk wikipedia article I've read. There is an Emperor God-king that rules the solar system and a lot of the sensibilities and some character arcs are derived from that.

The one thing that is probably different and is also something that puts a lot of people off is the tone. The series has a lot of meme-speak and while some of it's put there to be funny, there is a hidden horror in it that has a pay off in a later book.

Some books can be confusing simply because none of the POV characters are reliable narrators. None of them. Two of them don't give a FUCK about the plot until it comes crashing down on them and one of them simply doesn't have the ability to tell the difference between what's real and what isn't.

Theres literally a scene in the first book where a conversation about important world building is happening and the protagonist actively tunes it out because she does not care about it and thinks it's boring. Not a lot of telling you what's going on, here.

Ahhh... I see. I couldn't find much information on the book in the time I had, so I couldn't garner all that.

A polearm for a pistol is massively confusing lakdglakjg seems like a bit of a learning curve lol.

There's some linguistic irregularities in TLT apart from the memespeak. (though the memespeak is a thing. Miette is referenced by an unknowing populace 10,000 years in the future). There's some instances of them just using a word for a thing and you basically have to just guess as to what they are talking about given context clues. I.e. "the sonic." What the fuck is a "sonic" as a noun?

Sometimes, characters simply don't have a name for a thing? They're describing something familiar to us, the audience, but they've never seen something like that before. So you sometimes have to deduce things like the description of a monster skull with horns is probably just a cow.

That is all very doable, but I think the memespeak is the biggest thing people trying to get into it complain about. I can see how it can kind of take you out of it. Much of the writing style for this series is just Tamsyn Muir saying: "Trust me, I'm going somewhere with this I SWEAR" and the reader just kind of rolling with it.

She uses memes, switches perspective voice, she replaces the Dramatis Personae at the beginning of the books with "List of Dogs to Invite to Birthday Party" in one book--don't worry about it. She commits atrocious writing sins but it works and it shouldn't but it does and I can't stand her.

So there's a scene in Book of the New Sun where Severian sees what is clearly a painting of the Moon Landing, and not knowing what it is, describes Neil Armstrong as 'a knight wearing white armor and a gold visor' . The stranger part is that he can tell it is a moon landing of a *type* , but is jarred by the fact that the moon is grey and not green.
