— hello, i'm jade but call me jules if you want! i’m a freshman in high school and i write for fun as a hobby to pass time so don’t take anything seriously lol

— i am a MINOR cisgender female and i use she/her pronouns but i'm okay with they/them as well! i also like to go by unlabeled but you could also call me straight and i wouldn’t be mad (i have a LOT of male crushes and there’s honestly too many fandoms and people for me to list 🤦🏾‍♀️😭)

— i’m african-american and a christian so please respect both of these things. i study health science to hopefully pursue a career in the healthcare field (either a doctor or nurse) and i have NO CLUE about colleges yet so don’t ask lol

—i love love LOVE english and social studies! even though i’m not taking social studies this year, it’s still a requirement to graduate!

(there are many more but these are pretty much my mains and all i could think of)

— i’m an ex-athlete but i still love sports! my favorite teams are the dallas cowboys, san antonio spurs, and memphis grizzlies! i played volleyball for three years, soccer for one year, cheered for six years, and did choir for six years as well! plus i went to my state’s honor choir and have been in six plays! (seriously is my lucky number six????)

SUMMARY- when malcolm and his childhood best friend both confess their love for each other.

WARNINGS- minor cursing, use of y/n, fluff

the venue was almost empty when malcolm finally found you. you were sitting on the edge of a road case backstage, swinging your legs like you had all the time in the world, like he hadn’t just played the one of the biggest shows of his life.

he slowed down when he saw you, like he always did, like you were the only thing in the room that actually made sense.

“there you are,” he said quietly.

you looked up and smiled. “hey rockstar.”

“don’t start.”

“i’m just saying. you looked insane out there.”

malcolm scratched the back of his neck, still flushed from the stage lights and adrenaline. “you stayed.”

“yeah.” a pause.

“you always stay,” he said softer.

that really hit different. it always did when he said things like that, like he didn’t realize how much weight his words carried. you shrugged like it was nothing just to stop yourself from screaming.

“someone has to make sure you don’t get kidnapped by your own ego.”

he let out a small laugh, but it didn’t fully land. he sat down next to you, close enough that your shoulders almost touched, close enough that your brain immediately started acting stupid. for a minute neither of you spoke, just the noise of crew packing up and the hum of the crowd still leaving. then malcolm said,

“we need to talk.”

your stomach dropped a little. you tried to joke it off.

“that sounds like i’m about to get fired from being your best friend.”

he didn’t laugh this time.

“no, it’s just…”

he exhaled, looking down at his hands. you’d known him your whole life. you knew that look, that was his i’m-about-to-fuck-something-up-face. your voice softened.

“malcolm…what’s wrong?”

he shook his head immediately.

“nothing’s wrong. that’s the problem.”

you blinked.

“that makes absolutely no sense.”

“i know.”

he finally looked at you and something in his expression made your chest go tight, because it wasn’t stage malcolm, it wasn’t confident malcolm. it was just him.

your malcolm.

“i’ve been trying to figure out how to say this without ruining everything,” he admitted.

your heart started beating harder.

“ruining what everything?”

he gave a short laugh.

“us.”

that word sat in the air too long.

you swallowed. “we’re fine.”

“yeah,” he said quickly, like he didn’t believe it. “we’re always fine, that’s the problem.”

you frowned a little. “malcolm, just say it.”

he shook his head. “no.”

you squinted. “no?”

he pointed at you, suddenly defensive. “you say it.”

you actually laughed a little. “..what?”

“you go first.”

“why would i go first? i don’t even know what’s going on!”

“because i can’t.”

you stared at him. “that is not how conversations work.”

“it is right now.”

you groaned and leaned back. “you’re being so annoying.”

“y/n, you’ve been annoying since we were kids.”

that made you pause. something in your chest twisted at the memory. six years old. him with a busted knee on his driveway. you laughing until you helped him up anyway. you looked back at him slowly.

“you’re doing that thing again.”

“what thing?”

“when you act like something’s a joke when it’s not.”

silence. malcolm stopped smiling.

your smile softened. “just say it.”

he inhaled like it hurt. then finally,

“i think i’ve been in love with you for a really long time.”

everything stopped. like even the air forgot to move.

you blinked once, twice.

“you go first,” you said quietly.

malcolm let out a breathy laugh like he couldn’t believe you.

“no way.”

your eyes widened.

“no way what.”

“you’re telling me…to go first…after that?”

you sat up a little. “you think you’re the only one, mac?”

that wiped the smile off his face instantly.

“wait.”

you shook your head, suddenly nervous now that it was real.

“malcolm, i’ve been in love with you since we were kids. i just didn’t think you’d ever actually say anything.”

he stared at you like his brain had short-circuited.

“since we were kids?”

you nodded slowly. “yeah.”

he laughed once, completely stunned. “that’s actually insane.”

“you’re insane.”

“guess we’re both insane.”

you both went quiet again, but this time it felt different, lighter, like something heavy finally broke open. malcolm shifted closer without thinking.

“so what now,” he asked quietly.

you shrugged, smiling a little. “i don’t know. you’re the one with stage experience.”

he huffed a laugh. “yeah, that was way harder than a concert.”

you looked at him, and it was like fifteen years of everything finally lined up at once. “can i kiss you? or are you gonna overthink that too.”

he froze for half a second, then shook his head. “no overthinking.”

“good.”

and this time when he leaned in, it didn’t feel rushed or dramatic. it just felt inevitable, like every version of both of you had been heading here the whole time. when you pulled back, you were both smiling a little like you couldn’t help it. malcolm rested his forehead against yours.

“this is kind of crazy,” he whispered.

“more than crazy.”

“i really do love you, y/n.”

“i know.”

he laughed softly. “you’re unbearable.”

“you still love me though.”

malcolm paused and it felt like he finally let go of a breath he’d been holding for years.

“yeah,” he said quietly, “i really do.”
