That reading is a great habit/hobby is something I have believed as long as I can remember. A well written book is a savior in every sense. Some of the most joyous moments of my life have been around books.

Lately I became somewhat critical about reading as a medium of escaping one's reality. I call it idle reading as it does not give a scope of cultivating skills.

But then, not everything in life can be tagged as so called 'useful'....as something I need to exel. I think back to all those instances when such idle reading was all I craved for. I now realise that I may not have the patience of going through an entire 500 page novel at one go, I'm more inclined towards short stories. Has my ability to hold concentration over one particular objective suffered such a blow!

An attention span of 30 seconds is perfect for enjoying reels and clips, it is not sufficient for appreciating the beauty of words, the structure of a sentence or the layered emotions that they hold. Maybe, while navigating the intense world of digital media I have afterall lost an incredible skill.

Kantha (Bengali: কাঁথা) is a form of embroidery originating in Bengal region, i.e. Bangladesh and the Indian states of West Bengal, Tripura and parts of Assam. It has its roots in nakshi kantha, an ancient practice among bengali women of making quilts from old saris and rags by sewing them together. In modern usage, kantha generally refers to the specific type of stitch used. The kantha needlework is distinct and recognised for its delicacy. The stitching on the cloth gives it a slightly wrinkled, wavy effect. Today, kantha embroidery can be found on all types of garments as well as household items like pillowcases, bags and cushions.

While it is an increasingly diversifying art form, traditional kantha embroidery motifs are still sought after. Traditional kantha embroidery is two-dimensional and are usually of two distinct types: geometric forms with a central focal point, carried over from the nakshi kantha tradition and influenced by islamic art forms; and more fluid plant, floral, animal and rural motifs with stick-figure humans depicting folklores and rural life in Bengal.

Nakshi kantha (Bengali: নকশি কাঁথা) is a type of embroidery tradition from Bengal region, i.e Bangladesh and Indian states of West Bengal, Tripura and part of Assam. The basic material used is thread and old cloth. Traditionally, kantha was produced by women strictly for the use of the family. However, these days after the revival of the nakshi kantha art form, they are produced commercially.

The name nakshi kantha is derived from the Bengali word naksha, which means artistic patterns, and kantha which originated from the Sanskrit word kontha, meaning rags, as kantha is made of rags. Traditionally kanthas had a white background accented with red, blue and black embroidery; later yellow, green, pink and other colours were also included. The running stitch called 'kantha stitch' is the main stitch used. Even though no specific strict symmetry is followed, a finely embroidered kantha will always have a focal point. Most kanthas will have a lotus as focal point, and around the lotus there are often undulating vines or floral motifs. Other motifs may include solar, lunar, wheel, swastika or other circular images as well as flowers, leaves, birds, fish, and animals. Although most kanthas have some repeated traditional motif, no two nakshi kanthas are same and the individual style of the artist is retained.

The time ticks towards the stroke of midnight, the old year ushers in a new one and fills me with hope. 2023 was a hectic year, time flew past almost without a notice. It's been a year of many many changes, experiments, victories and losses. Sleepless nights became a norm at one point. But yes, the most awaited family trip has finally happened (it almost didn't) and I'm so glad. Here's to starting 2024 on a positive note!(cheers)
