You clutch your sweater, it’s soft yarn being a barrier of warmth. But also one of protection, as with the mass of layers you put on today they were the only thing that gave your body volume. The late night air kept outside cold, as just a few minutes ago you and Chance were out. You’d tried to tell him how you felt today, you knew that it wouldn’t have gone anywhere. As the words of his rejection rang through your head, “I’m sorry but you’re more of a friend to me. I can’t date you, I’d only hurt your feelings.”
Using one of your long sleeves you brushed a stray tear from your eye, you’d been sniffling about it a little by the pier. At least the waves crashing against the pier seemed to clear your thoughts, the sounds were familiar. You’d sit out here a lot when you’d have bad days like this, not as if you had anything better to do right now. You had a few hours till the pier closed, so you would make the most of it while you sat against the bench that gave you the usual view of the ocean you’d stare at.
Too bad your phone was dead or you’d probably listen to your playlist. Or take pictures of the view, but for now you’d settle just for soaking in nature. With the same sea birds you’d see by the pier were wandering around, at times earlier in the morning people would feed them bread. You included, they were smart, maybe too smart as one time one of them had recognized you and snagged a piece of bread out of your usual bag of bread leftovers you fed them.
If on cue one of them glanced at you for a split second before flying away, the sun was setting. After all the sun was setting and you would have taken this as a sign to go home, but you didn’t feel like going home. Nor did you really want to go home, knowing that all you’d see were pictures of you and Chance. Sitting here you were trying to let it go, your brain stubbornly wouldn’t let you forget what happened.
Footsteps made their way against the creaky boards of the pier, you were far too tired to bring energy to look over to see who it was. Yet you could smell something, silk, incense, and soft lilac flowers. “I was texting you but I should have guessed that your phone was dead. You always respond.” His voice softly cut through the quietness of the air and the faint caw of birds, before he sat next to you on the bench. Not too close, not too far. Around the right amount of space for you to reach out to him or come closer if you felt like it.
“I had a feeling that something was wrong. Earlier today you texted me before you went out with Chance.” Itrapped’s words were more like a statement than anything else, he didn’t ask any questions on how it went. Taking note as to how you were slouched against the bench and practically sinking into your sweater. It’s sleeves that were slightly damp from you sniffing earlier and with how he was on the bench, it wouldn’t have been that hard to smell the salt from the tears.
“You know that you can tell me anything right?” He’d slightly adjust the cuffs of his sleeves, a habit of his. One that you had seen him do countless of times. Nodding you took a little bit of effort into looking over at him, you had never seen him concerned like this. Disregarding the fact that you couldn’t see his eyes at all, you knew that he had a sharp grudge in his eyes against Chance. This maybe being for more than one reason, although mostly because of you.
Slowly you shifted over closer to him and almost instantly he opened his arms, allowing you to bury your face into his shoulder. His hands brushed through your hair, carefully looping through each piece as he let you cry it out. Ignoring how much this shirt cost, that being the least of his concern right now. Your feelings being way more important to him than any price tag. “When you’re ready I’ll walk you home.”
Burn every picture of Chance while I’m at it.. Itrapped would add under his breath.
