he spent 1864 lifetimes reaching for the shadows beyond the cage just to realise what he wanted was the bars all along 🫶 crazy its craazzyyyyyy
found this ancient dokja drawing in the drafts
kim dokja is incredible because the whole time we see him we are experiencing him through several layers of interference, the first layer being a literal psychological wall that shuts off his emotional responses without his permission in order to protect him (and we see a very different dokja when it’s gone) on top of that is his own habit of portraying himself very poorly and his complete unwillingness to admit when he wants something even to himself. but even further than that, the reveal that none of these words were even written by him, but by someone desperately trying to understand him by imagining how he felt to create three layers of separation from a whole, authentic kim dokja. all this to say i can make him do whatever the hell i want and no one can say its out of character because what even is that. he’s designed to be interpreted in universe. the narrative openly invites you to shuffle through the information it provides to build your own version of kim dokja based on what you choose to believe and what you toss aside. the world is your oyster. and kim dokja is the world. and i am eating him whole and cannibalizing him. and also i am making him have a really embarrassing panic attack at the grocery store. because i can. it’s really beautiful

Biyoo’s name (analysis)
I’ve been thinking a lot about biyoo, or specifically the scene where she gets her name.
We all know how important names are in ORV and in Korean culture in general. Dokja was named “Dokja” because his mother wanted him to be a reader, and his father wanted him to grow up independent, someone who does not rely on others. And he becomes exactly that. A reader. Alone. A “dokja” in every sense of the word.
In Korean, “Biyoo” means “metaphor” or “analogy.” I have been thinking a lot about how Biyoo serves as a metaphor in the story. Honestly, it is hard to narrow her down to just one thing, because she embodies so many.
But the first thing that came to mind was “change”. She has been the 41st Shin Yoosung, a disaster, a wandering soul, a reincarnation, a dokkaebi. She takes on multiple forms throughout the novel. She is never just one fixed existence.
Dokja’s name put him in a box. It defined him before he had the chance to define himself. He was the reader, the observer, the one outside the story. But Biyoo, the “metaphor,” is not confined to one literal meaning. A metaphor shifts depending on context.
While Dokja’s name trapped him, Biyoo’s name allows her to become something fluid. Something that changes. Something that can mean more than one thing at once.
(I doubt this was the intended meaning, but honestly I don’t think it matters. Death of the author and all that)
i forgot if i already posted about this or if its too obvious to be even commented on but its crazy to me that orv is all about the walls we build around ourselves, and the novel ends with a door being opened in hopes of finding someone in the other room.
kim dokja should look like a guy i see at the gas starion at 9pm buying cup ramen and caffeinated water or like he could be my friends uncle or my weird neighbor who doesn’t do the polite neighbor wave when we see each other. kim dokja should be a natural inclusion in any environment. my eyes should catch on him just long enough to think “his shirt is inside out” and then smoothly pass over him with complete disaffection. he should look like a guy i maybe went to highschool with but im not sure so im not gonna say anything in case im wrong. kim dokja should illicit a feeling of warm familiarity by being comfortably indistinguishable from any other person i saw that day or any other day. like an actor in a toothpaste commercial. but not any of the celebrities. just the normal ass people they drag on camera to recite a script so you feel like you can actually trust what they’re saying because they look like your friends mom and not Kelly Clarkson. that’s kim dokja
We need to start talking more about Congo (DRC). I literally never see posts about it anymore.

The “green tech” industry is reproducing the same colonial and extractive patterns that got us to the climate crisis.

"Don't ever think that, just by discarding this turn, your next one will be better.
Because just maybe, the regression turn you wish to abandon could very well be the one single turn where you still get to see the end of this world as a 'human being'."
