We all do, buddy. We all do
I fuckinâ love Maomao. At first you see her nearly work herself to death to save the emperorâs concubine and youâre like âAh. Sheâs scared of getting her head chopped off for failing the Emperorâs direct command.â And then you see her do it again for the blue roses challenge, just out of love for the game and a desperation to one-up her shitty bio dad, and youâre like âAh. Itâs a character trait.â
Apothecary Diaries: Maomaoâs Story
âApothecary Diaries is a detective storyâ, âApothecary Diaries is a romantic storyââŠno, itâs Maomaoâs story. She is the Apothecary and it is her diary. Hence why we call her the unreliable narrator because she is the one narrating. Does the story switch POV at times? Sure, but the overall arc of the narrative is Maomao. How this world and its challenges, experiences and triumphs shape her as a growing adult.
The mystery solving is only a vehicle to showing us Maomaoâs growth in maturity as she learns to develop her medicinal craft, sharpen her deductive skill and stops relying on presumption alone but on that which she can prove without a doubt as well. The romance, on the other hand, shows us her growing emotional maturity. Her willingness to open up her heart over time, to let someone in who she doesnât always understand, who frustrates her but also pushes her in a good way and is one of the only people she lets into her private world.
Both of these elements are what come together to make Maomao a whole character but theyâre not separate from one another. Theyâre part of a blending narrative that shows the progression of one young womanâs life from isolated, almost purely rational Apothecary to a young adult with more compassionate understanding and an ever-expanding medical knowledge. This is a story of well-rounded growth. You canât take one and divorce it from the other because then you miss the entirety of the picture in Apothecary Diaries. That it is Maomaoâs tale of her life, lived in steps over time as any life would be.
Something else I'll add to the conversation around Jinshi's behavior when he's immediately post-burn is how intense your emotions can get after a major injury.
Acting irrational during a serious healing process is extremely normal. It's around 4 continuous weeks you'd be expected to seek serious mental healthcare. Spikes of guilt, anxiety, emotional neediness, those would be expected even for a well-supported athlede who suffered an expected sports injury.
Jinshi, however, felt emotionally driven to self-inflict a third degree burn.
I think the utter desperation of the act gets overlooked. This is a character who felt SO strongly that no one would listen to him, that he TRULY believed there was no better option than to brand himself like a cow.
Of course he's going to act kind of weird and bratty afterwards...? Yes hello ancient chinese 911 the social ape yearns for social assurance.
BREAKING NEWS! "20-year-old does something wreckless in desperate cry for help. Clings to only source of emotional stability afterwards." Should we update the DSM? Should I oujia Freud? Is this really so hard to understand
"gender is a social construct": fairly easy for leftists to understand
"race is a social construct": a bit harder to swallow for some but still reasonable
"mental illness is a social construct": this one gets you hate mail in your inbox
