my name is yuey’stel, second born of five. once, i was just another child of the Omaticaya, but my birth was marked by prophecy. the elders say Eywa placed two forces within me so that i may one day lead my people. Nawm’atan is the side of myself that leans towards connection. harmony. growth. she is considered the "great light" of our world, working in accordance with Eywa's want to heal. but there is another side. Kä’pxaw. she is the side of myself our elders fear. the side i cannot always control. she means to be a "sudden storm". i move forward each day, learning how to walk the line between creation and destruction, freedom and responsibility, duty and desire. i am just yuey’stel, but i am also of light and storm, and still, i am learning what it truly means to be whole.
my parents are the heart and the spine of our clan. my mother, the tsahìk, and my father, the olo’eyktan, the chief and protector of our people. they are equal parts love and expectation. even before i was born, they knew my arrival would be unlike any other. my birth was not a celebration of perfection, but a recognition that balance would be required. so, they taught me everything they could . . . the discipline of craftwork, the rhythms of ritual, the patience needed to hear Eywa’s voice. they guided me in the ways of our people, showing me how to create, to heal, to honor tradition. their teachings came calmly as i was not the first born. the eyes of expectation—that belonged to ralu. i was able to learn without carrying the burden.
but then he died. and everything shifted. where i was once second in line, i became first. because when my brother died, the mantle of future protector fell to me. i had to step into a role i wasn’t ready for, carrying the weight of my family and the expectations of our people. rai’uk and teylan, the twins, are wild and restless. ri’nela, the youngest, is sharp and gentle. i guide them as ralu did me. anchor them, try to keep the currents from pulling us apart. we argue, we laugh, we stumble, and we fall but we always help each other back up.
i first saw him moving through the forest under night’s glow. he was clumsy but determined to live. he collided with me, or perhaps i with him. either way, our paths crossed exactly as they were meant to. from the start, there was a push-and-pull. he is raw, unformed, and yet a spark flickers in him. one that i grow fond of.
our bond grows in measured steps. he learns to respect my authority, and in return, i begin to see his potential. i wondered what it was about him that Eywa told me to save but now i know that he is a mirror, a trial, a possibility. and slowly, carefully, he becomes someone I can imagine belonging—not only among our people, but at my side.
