[The Untamed] Headcanon/Musings #1 

(aka thoughts while showering) 

I’m honestly curious what Lan Zhan’s explanation to his clan was after he brought A-Yuan back to Gusu. 

He just watched Wei Ying fall to his death, and after the fact, he alone stood against the other cultivators when they came to raid the Burial Mount, which, thank god he did, because had he not been there, the others would’ve found A-Yuan and killed him. 

Then Lan Zhan went back to Gusu to receive his punishment, presumably after he settled A-Yuan with someone in Gusu to be cared for. It would have to be Lan Xichen, wouldn’t it? Who else would Lan Zhan trust? And you can clearly see later that Sizhui is recognized as a direct member of the Lan Clan, as in Lan by blood. This is shown by the style of ribbon he is allowed to wear. His ribbon has a cloud pattern sewn in the center whereas non-blood related disciples wear plain white forehead ribbons. 

Imagine Xichen’s face - confusion, shock, sympathy, worry - upon seeing his brother, right arm still bloody from the battle, carrying a small child back into Cloud Recesses.  

Because I 100% could see Lan Zhan being an unrelenting rebel when it suits him, and just straight up tells his brother that the child is his. Like not even ‘oh i’ve adopted him’ - no, just ‘he’s mine deal with it’.

On the steps of the front gate, deep in the mountains of Cloud Recesses, Lan Xichen, who must’ve paced there for some time waiting for him, could barely form words. “Wangji, the child - he - ”

Lan Zhan responded without pause. “He’s mine.” Echoing the words that had once been spoken in jest to shock him, he added, “This is my son.” 

Uttering those words aloud, remembering a time before ‘too-late’, remembering A-Yuan’s laughter, Wei Ying’s smile - his heart could break right then, were it not already in shards and pieces. 

And that pain, it must’ve bled through the hollowness of his gaze, because Xichen took a step towards him, arms open and ready with acceptance. “Give him to me.” 

Lan Zhan blinked, a little caught off guard. His grip on A-Yuan tightened, and he could not stop himself from pulling away. The ‘no’ was on the tip of his tongue before his brother’s beseeching face gave him pause. 

“As he is your son, then I am his uncle. Brother, surely you would not think me so low as being capable of allowing any harm to come to my own nephew.” 

Xichen was calm, determined. Thank heavens, because Lan Zhan needed that now more than anything. Slowly, he relented, passing the feverish child into Xichen’s hold. “He’s ill. Needs medicine urgently.”  “I will see to it. Wangji,” Xichen seemed regretful then. “Uncle is waiting for you. You must know -”  “I will accept punishment. What has passed, whatever may come, I will accept punishment for it all. Thank you, brother, for taking care of A-Yuan.”  

Xichen was probably the one who kept A-Yuan safe while Lan Zhan went to receive his punishment and proceed to be incapacitated for months and punished for 3 years. He probably took care of the paperwork i.e. properly inducting little Lan Yuan into the clan. A-Yuan gave absolutely zero clue as to where he came from. After he recovered from his illness, he seemed to have forgotten everything. But Lan Zhan had said A-Yuan was his, and whether or not that was true was irrelevant, so Xichen quietly took A-Yuan to see Lan Zhan periodically during those 3 years. The first time A-Yuan called Lan Zhan “ba-ba”  during such visits, Lan Zhan didn’t correct him, and so Xichen’s only caution to little A-Yuan was that he should only call Lan Zhan ba-ba in private, and Hanguang-Jun in front of others. To the rest of the clan, Lan Yuan is an orphan from a distant Lan relation. At times, there were whispers of suspicion - an illegitimate son, of Hanguang-Jun no less - amongst Gusu Lan’s inner most circles. Thankfully, Lan Qiren had adamantly refused to entertain such a “scandalous falsehood”, and seeing that gossip was also against the Lan Clan’s principles, the rumours never spread. 

Of course Lan Zhan never told a soul - not even Xichen, because there was always a chance that his brother, as kind and trusting as he was, would tell their uncle Qiren and then it’d be a disaster - that A-Yuan was a Wen. Of course he didn’t. Because the cultivator world already caused the death of Wei Ying, who no matter what he’d done didn’t deserve the hatred and lies slandered at him. Now that he’s gone, died young before his time, reputation ruined and without even a proper grave by which to remember him, Lan Zhan was not about to lose the last bit of evidence of Wei Ying’s goodness left in this world.

Danmei is a very unique genre of queer literature which both centers and de-centers queerness. None of the Danmei I’ve read have been essentially “about” being gay. They’re just stories of life, of magic, of fantasy, of love, in which the main characters happen to be gay. Which is a kind of representation I have often seeked from western media and related intermediaries because why is every gay story, a coming out story? Is there not more to queer people than that?

However, while capturing the personhood of queer people; Danmei also captures the queerness of people because none of these stories would work if the characters weren’t gay/queer

Wei Wuxian’s absolute buffoonery of misunderstanding Lan Zhan’s feelings in a decade long telephone game in which neither of them open their damn mouth would never work in a non-queer story because between a man and a woman romance would be the natural assumption of everyone around them and therefore wouldn’t leave space for confusion. The misunderstanding of their romance is so closely tied to the plot succession that the plot would be… non existent without it

In TGCF Xie Lian and Hua Cheng’s absolute aspirational love is literally in the backseat and front seat of the story. Not too different from a classic hero’s journey but instead of the hero being one person, it’s two people. They are so intertwined with eo that they become one character and witness a lot of the story together. Witness being a very interesting word choice. Their queerness doesn’t drive the story but replacing one of them with a woman would dampen the effect— it’d remove the uncertainty, the confusion from everyone around them, the genuine slow burn of the romance. There’s also this idea of Hua Cheng falling in love with Xie Lian so far separated from concepts such as gender or whatever which wouldn’t have been hammered home in a straight romance where those conversations aren’t always had between the audience and the story

And Erha.. well obviously. Half of Chu Wanning’s “this is so inappropriate” spiral wouldn’t exist if he was a woman. And, the idea of Mo Ran being a “cut sleeve” builds up the under current of his character being so far dismissed by society because he’s seen as immoral. Which just wouldn’t serve to the same effect if he was into exclusively women because so was every other character.

Not in a single one of these stories is queerness and homosexuality the central theme of the story yet without them, the romance wouldn’t be the same. Liking the same gender as you comes with baggage in our society which is so heteronormative and that effect has to exist in the person characters become for them to be authentic but at the same time, limiting that effect only to produce coming out stories/falling in love stories is unfair. Danmei mends this through a middle ground where the plot is the focus but it doesn’t exist in a vaccum, it exists in queerness itself

An entire flashback episode! I mean, it starting with Lucifer in heaven, being an outcast and watching the other angels create earth. Him being a curious little angel as he explores Eden and bumps into Lilith where they fall in love! Then them giving Eve the apple and being casted into hell. Followed by them ruling hell and eventually having Charlie. Heck, maybe even showing us up to where Lilith left and ending the episode with Charlie's decision to start the hotel.

How the f do I explain what lacking a hyperfixation feels like to a neurotypical?? Like, I get legit depressed and aimless and even more unproductive than usual. They’d probably think it’d be the other way around (on the second point)

When I have a hyperfixation-even if I’m not actively doing anything related to it-I just move through life slightly better because at least it’s there. When I don’t have one, I just do random shit (like an unusual amount of scrolling) looking for one

Not even being productive (well I don’t have a book to read so I’ll clean the bathroom-nope), just making myself feel worse with the downward spiral of I don’t have a thing currently bringing me joy and I’m also not even doing anything else to feel good about myself because I’m too busy looking for a dopamine hit from somewhere but even though I know intellectually that working out will make me feel better my brain just goes NOOOO like Lilo at Nani.

What if Draco was born premature and was originally due in late July and was almost the subject of the prophecy? What if despite that the prophecy still applies to him in a way because it is his wand that ultimately kills Voldemort? and if you feel like putting on Drarry glasses, what if Draco’s wand working so well for Harry in the transfer of the Elder Wand’s ownership means that Draco’s love for Harry is in fact the “power to vanquish the Dark Lord” referenced in the prophecy?

Okay, yes, this, but I really need to go through the prophecy to explain exactly why I think this is true, should you accept the headcanon that Draco was a premee and due in late July.

So the prophecy goes as follows:

The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches... born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies... and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not... and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives... the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies....

And such, into order to be a potential-but-missed Chosen One, Draco would have to meet certain requirements to match what Trelawney predicts alongside Harry and Neville. But at the same time, we also have to acknowledge that (a) half of the requirements only kick in once Voldemort chose Harry and (b) there’s a lot of room for interpretation both Watsonianly and Doylistically as to what the requirements actually are. And that second point is very important regarding the ‘born to those that have thrice defied him’ thing because while Narcissa and Lucius absolutely do defy Voldemort, they only do it after his first ‘death’ in 1980.

Lucius, for example, doesn’t look for Voldemort after his first fall, going as far as to denounce him entirely as a master in order to avoid an Azkaban sentence. He also gives away one of Voldemort’s horcruxes, which leads to Dumbledore figuring out that he had them in the first place and putting Harry on the hunt that eventually destroys him. Narcissa goes behind Voldemort’s back to set up an alliance with Snape to protect her son and then lies to his face about Harry being dead. That’s two each right there, with the third defiance being something they undertake together when Lucius and Narcissa refuse to fight for Voldemort in the final battle and instead look for Draco amidst the chaos.

It’s only after his parents commit their third defiance that Draco’s ‘power the Dark Lord knows not’ is revealed: he was the secret master of the Elder Wand and his ownership of it is what kept Voldemort from using it to its fullest potential before ownership was transferred to Harry after the Skirmish at Malfoy Manor. At the same time, you can also look at ‘the power the Dark Lord knows not’ to be love, the same as Harry’s power, especially if you’re going down the Drarry angle because it certainly says something about how Draco’s wand works better for Harry than any other wand ever does despite how the wand lore that surrounds Hawthorne and unicorn hair wands telling us that it shouldn’t. Also, given that it was Narcissa’s love for Draco that eventually ends up protecting Harry when she does the utterly miraculous task of lying to known mindreader Lord Voldemort, it’s also possible that some of her ability to out-Occlumence Voldemort had to do with a sort of extension of Harry’s love shield through Draco onto Narcissa— a sort of “I care about you and therefore the people you love are protected by-proxy of you” thing. Love ultimately is what protects Draco, as well as how he protects others in turn as both his parents and Harry would not be alive if it weren’t for his love and loyalty for them (though what type of love he feels for Harry is up to reader interpretation).

That last one might be a stretch, but I do think that it’s an important angle to examine not just because the requirements of the prophecy are wish-washy in canon, but because the whole idea of ‘Draco as the Missed Child of Prophecy’ revolves around the idea that he misses the marks for requirement by a few inches to the left. Take, for example, the line about how ‘the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal.’ Well, Draco isn’t marked as an equal, but he is certainly Marked. Yes, Draco carrying the Dark Mark was not officially confirmed in Book!Canon but given that Harry does believe that he has been Marked and that he’s generally correct about everything Draco does throughout HBP, I’d say that there is a very high likelihood that he is and that JKR just never got around to confirming it for real. So I’d argue that he does meet that requirement, but in the same way that he was born too prematurely and thus misses the exact requirements by a hair.

And as for the whole ‘neither can live while the other survives, one must die at the hands of the other’ thing, yes, Draco doesn’t match up with that either. But that being said, he is still heavily involved in the final battle between Harry and Voldemort. Both of the wands in that duel formerly belonged to Draco Malfoy. Voldemort’s penultimate words on this earth are literally threatening to murder him in order to take his power, while Harry’s penultimate words in that battle are to talk about the technicalities involving the ownership of both of Draco’s former wands. Harry literally would not have been able to win on so many levels had it not been for Draco, whether we’re talking about the wands or lying for him at the Manor or Narcissa protecting Harry or even how Sectumsempra and Draco’s time in the Room of Hidden Things allowed for Harry to know where the diadem was. So, yes, Draco might not have physically fought in the final battle between Harry and Voldemort, but his presence was undoubtedly there and is the deciding force on who died at whose hands— and Harry absolutely would not have been able to defeat a Voldemort without the help of the little boy with the pale face who threw Neville Longbottom’s remembrall and set up the opportunity for Harry to gain “the unerring skill of a Seeker” that allowed him to finally take physical possession of the Elder Wand.

So, yeah. I think that Harry was the Chosen Child of Prophecy, Neville was the Rejected Child of Prophecy, and Draco was the Missed Child of Prophecy. And it took the three of them working together in their own ways to take down Voldemort as the three who thrice defied him.

Been wanting to try and redraw this guy again for a while, and thought it'd be fun to experiment with the lineart style. I definitely had a much easier and more fun time drawing him this time compared to before lol
