Ilya is a yearner but Shane is NOT a yearner. Shane is a doer and a problem solver. At first he solves the problem of his feelings for Ilya by compartmentalizing and not feeling them. When this strategy stops working he hard pivots to going after his man. This man is not sitting around pining and suffering he is getting things done!

I have only two emotions (careful fear and dead devotion) | Hollanov | E | WIP - 24 Ch
Shane disappears from the hockey world between the prospect cup and the draft.
Years later, Ilya ends up playing for Ottawa anyway.
A fic about being lonely at the top and finding your home anyway.
I bet once Yuna gets to know Ilya as Shane's boyfriend, all the things that used to infuriate her about him as a player become endearing to her instead. Like before she would call him an asshole for the way he chirps everyone endlessly but now it's a good strategy and isn't it impressive how he's twice as clever in his second language as most other players in the league are in their first?
Shane calls her out on this change of heart and Yuna pretends she doesn't know what he's talking about.
always think of this meme when this scene comes up
I think the day Shane sits down and actually unravels the extent to which Ilya's family was, essentially, extorting him for money since he was out of juniors, he is going to be gripped by a wave of pitch black fury so intense it manifests as a physical feeling, a clenching in his throat his chest his stomach. He is going to remember Ilya at twenty nineteen seventeen, smooth faced and still so heart stoppingly handsome, and he is going to feel so deeply enraged on behalf of that kid. That kid who didn't have a mother to sit him down at the dinner table at fourteen and meticulously explain financial jargon to him until it all stopped flying over his head and the gibberish actually started to mean something. He didn't have that same mother set an alarm for three in the morning so she could make a call with Reebok and negotiate a deal on his behalf, and then do it again for Tim Hortons, Gatorade, Calvin Klein, CCM. He didn't have a father who always sneakily paid the bill at every restaurant they went to as a family no matter what because he didn't want Shane spending his money on them. A father who carefully set aside a college fund for Shane, just in case he decided hockey wasn't what he wanted. Shane thinks of that kid, navigating the jabbering of some accountant in a second language he barely understood, giving him advice on spending habits and credit scores and barely masking their condescension about the stumbling accented responses they'd receive, and Shane literally has to bend over and grip his office desk, white-knuckled and trembling because it's not fair it's not fair it's not fucking fair someone should have been there someone should have noticed someone should have stepped up and said something why why did nobody fucking do anything!!
I think Shane's going to straighten up after the wave passes over and through him and he's going to think Okay. Enough. And then he's going to drag Ilya from where he's been lounging on their couch, resplendent in his sweats and baggy tee, and he's going to make him sit down and read through his mom's probing emails about possible brand deals that would suit Ilya's image and he's going to ignore Ilya's performative whining and he's going to make him talk through every one and the whole time he's thinking Never again, I'll never let it happen to you ever again.

And that was that. Ilya’s feet are his feet. They do as they like. And what they like, currently, is traipsing through the cold, charred remains of the forest he once so lovingly cradled in his care. Technically, it’s still his. He can still come back any time, command it at any time, lay on the ground and feel the bugs chittering below the soil any time he wants. He can wait patiently for the trees and bushes to regrow, for the animals to return, for the rains to refill the rivers and streams. But he designated a proxy for a reason, and so here they are for the final severance.
the end!!! we did it! thank you so much for coming along on this ride with me, and i can't wait to see you for the next one.
God as truly awful and terrible it is that Shane was right to be afraid that coming out meant losing everything there’s a delicious horror that him doing so is the exact thing that would break Ilya. I don’t know if it would hit another partner the way it impacts Ilya. Bc everyone is right, that it’s Shane choosing Ilya that people can’t get over. (I mean the real reason is homophobia but it being Ilya who Shane chose is the plausible deniability they all hide behind.)
But for Ilya? The man who watched his father’s love kill his mother? The man who watched his brother’s love beat down his sister-in-law? The man who has only seen love destroy the object of their affection and who was told since he was a small child that it’s his greed and want that destroys and brings shame to the family? The man who loves so desperately and deeply that he moves countries and gives up everything he’s built for the chance at a real, stable love? It’s his actual nightmares come true. Other people think that Shane is worse for loving him. They consider his love a humiliation that Shane endures. (I mean, they don’t see it as love, they see it from a toxic masculinity framework where sexual relationships indicate only submission/subjugation.) they use his love for Shane as a way to take away everything Shane cares about; as a way to make him small and isolated and alone.
Jfc it’s likely that he was drawn to Shane bc Shane was so strong and less likely to be able to be cowed like the women in his family. That trophy scene isn’t just for Shane to remember who he is; it’s also Ilya desperately proving to himself that everyone else is wrong and that he didn’t destroy his partner by loving him.
Okay so the inverse of this is that maybe also being queer Saved Ilya’s life. Do you guys know that quote from Ocean Vuong?
In the world where Ilya faces the messaging that it’s love that destroys people when he’s a kid (bc he sees his parents’ relationship called love, and he sees the relationships his brother had with women called love and he knows that his love for his mother didn’t save her and hers for him wasn’t enough to make her stick around) it’s equally possible that he gets to see queer love as totally opposite from that. Maybe he builds a strong foundation trusting in alternative systems of love? Maybe the horror he experienced was survivable bc he knew the secret that his parents and brother and Russia didn’t- that the is another form of love that’s good and wholesome and true. And so he’s capable of loving Svetlana in a queer platonic way and he’s able to throw off the shackles and choose joy and freedom by showing love to Sasha. He can choose another way to love his brothers with how he shows his love to his teammates (the I love yous after the games).
Maybe that’s why we never see him doubt his queerness or see shame in it the same way Shane does. Maybe queerness was his salvation long ago and by being with Shane truly the only problems are logistical ones. And the logistical ones are there, we can’t deny that. But maybe we get to see that for him loving Shane was always salvation. It was never anything other than life-affirming, joy-inducing, safety-in-another-person’s-arms, love.
So then he gets to be the stalwart one and guide Shane to the warm sunshine of finding pride. He gets to be the queer elder guiding a baby to safety. He gets to protect those he loves this time. They finally let him and they’re finally safe. And he ends the cycle of violence his father perpetuated every time he guides a baby gay home. He gets to save them where he wasn’t allowed to save his mother or his brother or his sister in law or his niece. But he saves Shane. And Troy. And he helps save Ryan. So he does get tangible proof that he can be good. That his love heals and doesn’t hurt. So he saves himself too.
I do think that Ilya’s favourite movie is Cars but he will lie if someone asks and he’ll say something like fight club or rocky or whatever. but it’s Cars.
