March Meet The Maker Day 17 Catch-up: Creative space⁠ ⁠ This is the steaming area of my dye studio. I do my best to creatively maximize the functionality of my small space. You can see my bain-marie which I use for immersion dyeing and one of the turkey roasters I use for steaming hand painted items. My beloved spin dryer can be seen poking out from under the table. The metal rack holds all my dye stocks, chemicals, PPE and smallwares I use in dyeing. I have a smaller rack by my big dye table across the room that holds all my dye powders. The door that the steam table blocks leads to the unfinished basement. #MarchMeetTheMaker Day 15 catch-up: From idea to product⁠ ⁠ One of the unsung heroes of my studio. Definitely not a glamorous piece of equipment. She's old, held together with duct tape and unceremoniously hung on my dye stock rack with S hooks but I wouldn't be without my studio dry erase board. #MarchMeetTheMaker Day 14 catch-up: Big or small⁠ ⁠ We offer our fingering weight yarn bases in several put-ups. Here is a, example of the whole family of sizes (shown in the Lleap base).⁠ ⁠ Wee Skeins are 20g, usually semisolid or speckle dyed and great for heel/toe/cuff contrasts, knitted gnomes, all kinds of stuff.⁠ ⁠ Shorty Sock Twins are the little sibling to our classic Sock Twins. They are a set of two 30g center pull balls instead of the two 50g that come in the original Sock Twin sets. We added this line specifically for folks knitting for smaller feet who still wanted to use the entire color transition but they also work great paired with two of our Wee skeins for contrasting heel/toe/cuffs. Also great for mittens/cuffs. Offered in semisolid gradients and speckle gradients.⁠ ⁠ Sock Twins are our original sock sets that we've been offering since 2014. Just like their little siblings they are dyed side by side with their twin. Great for socks of course but there are so many creative ways to use these sets. One of my favorite is to hold both strands together for a super squishy cowl. Offered in semisolid gradients and speckle gradients.⁠ ⁠ Our Full Skeins are where my gradient dyeing started. A classic 100g skein. Fabulous for shawls. Can be combined in several clever ways for larger projects. #MarchMeetTheMaker Day 13: Planning⁠ ⁠ This is generally what Leila thinks of my planning process.⁠😼⁠ While I do utilize a digital note application for information I need long term I always rely on analog note taking for day to day tasks, process notes and often brainstorming.⁠📝⁠ ⁠ I use a three-ring binder that takes 8.5"x5.5" paper for my analog planner. The binder is key for me because:⁠ A) I prefer being able to take out individual sheets and write on them without obstruction. (Usually just the right hand pages since I'm a lefty)⁠ B) Being able to reorganize individual sheets of paper is key for my brain organization.⁠ C) I can archive old notes and keep using my binder. I've had this one for years now.⁠ ⁠ I have sections for things that I write on the fly like dye notes that are later digitized but the main section is my rolling task list. For any of you who bullet journal I use a variation on the Alastair Method. I find it simple and effective. I print, cut and hole punch my own dot grid paper and I prefer to use a mechanical pencil for my rolling task list because crossed out mistakes in ink annoy me and I like the feeling that my notes are more fluid and editable. #MarchMeetTheMaker Day 10 Catchup: Recharge⁠ ⁠ One of the major things I do on days where I need to recharge is take a social media break, but since this is a social media challenge I guess that doesn't really work for this prompt lol. Managing my energy levels as a neurodivergent person is something I always need to be particularly cognizant of and I have a plethora of recharge strategies. ⁠ ⁠ One that I always come back to is knitting vanilla socks. These are my current pair. This is the colorway "Betwixt" on Llark Sock Twins and they're living in my Zelda-inspired Llexical Sock Pouch. #MarchMeetTheMaker Day 9 Catchup: Trial & Error I often liken our one of a kind combed top batches AKA Elli AUs (for alternate universes) to sketches. They are a low stress way for me to not only use extra dye but also to play with new ideas, colors and techniques. Some of these ideas are refined into new, repeatable core colorways and some are just moments in time that a select few will get to enjoy transforming into handspun. Continuing to engage play and take chances in a low risk format is critical for my artistic mental health. #MarchMeetTheMaker Day 7: Learn I've always been an ardent autodidact. If I am struck curious about something I pursue the answers until my curiosity is sated. If I am taken with a skill I wish to gain I will research it deeply and then engage in informed trial and error. This is how I have taught myself the majority of the skills I use in my business and hobbies. But I had the benefit of being raised in a family that gave me a solid foundation of "common sense skills" and the encouragement to find the answers to my own questions. Being a rather precocious and inquisitive child my Parents were inundated with random questions in a time where there was no Google and I was promptly directed to "look it up" in our set of encyclopedias. While I do also use video and audio sources for research these days the written word still holds a special place in my heart. I've been a voracious reader my whole life. Some of what I read is for entertainment alone but I also enjoy and believe strongly in always pushing one's self to keep learning and my reading selections reflect that desire. Real talk time. One of the worst and most psychologically distressing long C*VID effects I had early on was the inability to read more than a sentence or two at a time. I would have zero comprehension no matter how many times I reread a paragraph of text. I also suffered bizarre lapses in memory, vocabulary and spelling. This still strikes on occasion when I have pushed myself too hard. It is distressing every time. I made and continue to make slow improvements (I think doing crossword puzzles every day is some help). About 4 months after my infection I tackled my first book since being sick (it was highly emotional for me) and I'm now back to my normal reading fervor. I also have been researching and teaching myself a new set of dye techniques the last couple of months. I'm not quite ready to reveal more about that yet but it feels amazing to be able to pursue the passion of curiosity and joy of learning again. #MarchMeetTheMaker Day 3: Snippet⁠ All the yarn blanks I dye are wound in-house (well technically these days they are wound at my Parents' house...AKA the satellite Llady Llama headquarters). Skeins are wound, weighed and split by myself and my Mom. My Dad runs the knitting machines he has motorized expressly for this purpose.⁠ ⁠ After I've dyed, rinsed and dried them the blanks are rewound into center pull balls by myself and my Mom (my Sister has been called into service at times as well). Each blank has a knotted loop to keep them from raveling during the dye process. And each little loop is snipped off before the blanks are rewound into the form our customers will receive them in. I'm oddly fond of these little piles of colorful snippets that accumulate as we rewind the yarn. It's that time of year again!⁠ #MarchMeetTheMaker Day 1: Brand Origin⁠ I started Llady Llama Fiber Co. in June of 2009.⁠ ⁠ The first slide shows my early dye setup in the kitchen of our second apartment in Western NY (back when my Wife was my Girlfriend). Note the vintage iPod in the background.😂 I was 25. I had left college just a handful of credits from finishing my Sculpture degree after finally and very painfully coming to the conclusion that maintaining any amount of functional mental health was incompatible with completing a degree that I didn't require to do what I really wanted anyway- to be a fiber artist and an indie dyer.⁠ ⁠ I had been inspired by a project in a Printmaking studio in 2007 to research drop spindles and had been diving down the textile/fiber arts rabbit hole since- incorporating it into my studio work but also filling my free time mostly by spinning. It got me through some of my lowest points.⁠ ⁠ So a dream, some entrepreneurial spirit and an imagination full of ideas blossomed into a family run business that combines all of our creative force and tenacity. Through which I found that I receive more fulfillment from the uniquely reciprocal experience of creating work that inspires and is transformed by other artists than I ever found in the "traditional art world". What I create is not a statement, but rather a conversation, however unspoken.⁠ ⁠ What about the llama? Yeah can't get away without addressing this. Basically...I just love them and have for a very long time. Originally it was part of the long term plan to have my own llamas but life just didn't work out that way. So our only llama is our Spokesllama, Elli (amazingly illustrated by my Wife @rachelillustrates) but we love her dearly and would never part with her.⁠ ⁠ Slides 2 through 6 show some more from the earliest era of Llady Llama. Lleto spindles are our medium-heavy weight line and the most versatile in my experience.
