Okay. Grammar lesson!

"People of color" is a noun. So use it as a noun.

"I am speaking about people of color."

People who are of color. People. People is a noun.

It is not, as the Internet likes to use it, an adjective!

"POC characters!" is the color blind racist equivalent of "colored characters!"

Do you want to call me colored? Is that the racism we really want to use? Old 1960s racism? Shall I go to the colored water fountain next? I'm sorry- the POC water fountain?

If you are talking about all non-white people as a group, use "People of Color".

"White people are used to being the default- which is why they get to be White and the rest of us are People of Color. The Other."

If you are talking about a specific group of people, and you KNOW that, then SAY their group and NOT "people of color".

"I am not just a person of color, I am Black. Antiblackness is about Black people, not all people of color. Otherwise, I'd just say racism. Words have meaning!"

it's so funny what u just consider normal growing up when it's relatively harmless. i guess i got athlete's foot all the time as a child, which makes sense bc i spent a lot of time swimming at public pools, showering in the locker rooms, etc. but i didn't know. i didn't know it was a fungus and my friends, siblings, and i just called it "toe cracks." (like the little fissures that can form between your toes) and i remember all the time as kids we'd be like "ugh i have a really big toe crack" and then we'd just move on. they didn't cause real trouble and healed on their own.

so anyway now i haven't had athlete's foot in like 15 years. so i was hanging out with maggie and i was like "oh yuck i have a big toe crack" and maggie was like "oh yeah that's ahtlete's foot" and i was like huh? all this time?? it's been a fungus???? my toe cracks??

yes that's what i'm saying lol! I think "like" made it sound like a comparison. i mean that the fissures/toe cracks were athletes foot all along. they didn't really bother us as kids bc it was never severe. i bet my poor mom did try to treat it but there were a lot of kids coming and going in our busy house so it was probably hopeless lol.

anyway i don't rly get it as an adult (til now) because i wear crocs/rubber shoes in public showers now and spray my birks & other sandals with antifungals.

In contrast some people say "there aren't any picky eaters in Asia 🙄" but this is laughably untrue. I have a cousin in India who refused until his 20s to eat anything in a sauce. as you can imagine in India this was difficult. he basically had to pick things out of curry and wipe them dry

it’s crazy how different you get treated in a mask but what really gets me is that when people ask why I’m masking, I’ve stopped saying I’m immunodeficient and started saying I have an immunodeficient family member at home. I am not exaggerating when I tell you this has 100% improved every single encounter I’ve had with anti-maskers. i’m not exaggerating in the slightest.

i used to tell people i’m immunodeficient and they’d ask invasive questions about my diagnosis, whether my parents kept my childhood overly sterile, whether I was vaccinated as a child (with the implication that it would have been bad if I were).

Now that I say I have an immunodeficient family member at home, people smile knowingly and say, “oh, well you do what you have to do,” and “my mom went through chemo. I remember how hard it was to do all the precautions” and “that’s so kind of you.”

if i tell someone i mask because i’m disabled, i’m assumed to be the weak link in our society, a burden to my family.

if i tell someone i mask to protect a disabled family member, i become the burdened, compassionate caretaker deserving of sympathy. how sad that i must limit myself to protect someone i love. how heroic that i choose to do so.

a lot of advice i see about being a good ally is to ask questions and learn from the lived experiences of the people you want to support. and of course i agree. but unfortunately people often interpret that as "any member of this community that i encounter is a ready, willing, enthusiastic educator on the diverse experiences of their community. i can ask them anything."

incorrect. not every marginalized person you meet wants to write you their memoir. no marginalized person you meet is obligated to be invested in your personal growth. it's no one's duty to have an elevator-pitch ready to win your support of their existence.

for just about every identity and experience you want to understand, there are known educators making content and even accepting and answering questions. difficult questions that are probably far harder for them to answer again and again than they are for you to ask. it's your responsibility to seek these willing educators out. it's your responsibility to be kind even when you're learning. so many of them become extremely burned out. and if they accept tips or any form of payment for their work, it's also your responsibility to support them in any way you can.

and yes, plenty of us have friends who are willing to field our questions as we learn and grow. many of us are those friends to others. if you and your friends have relationships in which asking questions is accepted, i'm not saying that's wrong. i have often been the asker and the asked.

but imagine if you didn't put everything to your friends all the time, and if everything wasn't put to you. imagine how good it would feel to expect a question about your life & experiences from your friend or your parent or your colleague, only to find out you don't have to explain it to them, because in an effort to understand you better, support you better, see you and love you, they sought out the information themselves. they did the reading. they learned the history. because they care so much about you. and imagine how good it feels to do that for someone else.

i took my friend to Hocking Hills state park yesterday and on our hike I talked all about the (now retired) park naturalist who mentored me years ago, along with the professor who also mentored me and how they got me my first job in my field after college, like I went on and on about my memories of them and the time I spent with them in the park, and then we got to a cave and they were both inside. I hadn’t seen either of then since I moved away seven years ago and then I went back to the state park for the first time since and they were just there. in a cave. they went to the cave together. one of them saw me and said “oh hi! what are you doing here?” like hey fancy us all being here in this cave together huh.

I know a company that does both these things and no surprise, when you shop there, the employees are always miserable and agitated.You should kill your managers in such situations imo. The only reason I receive treatment slightly above this is i'm lucky enough to have managers who are also bothered by these business practices. The water one is especially bad if you have heat intolerance, I was so sick regularly before I switched to a department with more leniency regarding water.

Depending on where you live these things may violate labor laws though so if you're in the same situation look into it. However in my experience any labor law violations happen without consequence regardless

If you live in the US, the water thing absolutely violates labor laws.

OSHA requires employers to provide potable water to employees in the workplace. This water must be accessible to all employees and can be used for drinking, washing, and other personal needs.

Water quantity: The amount of water provided must be enough to meet the needs of all employees, taking into account the air temperature, humidity, and the type of work being done.

Water access: The water must be readily accessible to employees.

The lack of chairs is an OSHA violation too.

The approved code of practice on the regulations requires employers to provide suitable seats for workers who have to stand to carry out their work, if the type of work gives them an opportunity to sit from time to time and provide suitable seats for workers to use during breaks.

Yes, violations often happen without consequences. But remember, not keeping the poster with all your rights as a worker visible? Is a violation too.

Document it. Photos, screenshots, save your emails, record conversations if you're in a one-party consent state. Then?

Report their asses.

If nothing happens, report them again. And again and again, until someone pays attention.

Even if there is not a specific guideline for the thing you want to report, all employers must adhere to the "general duty" clause... and you'd be surprised about all the things that fall under that.

For example, refusal to provide chairs anywhere in the building (in addition to being illegal and discriminatory anyway) also comes under the "fall protection" hazard. The CDC recommends that standing any longer than 15-30 minutes per hour can become a serious health hazard.

Yes- companies will always try to get away with breaking the law and fucking you over. That's how they've made their money.

But having a defeatist attitude and believing there is nothing you can do, and they'll never experience a consequence, so why bother reporting, is exactly how a lot of them keep getting away with it.

There are more of us workers than there are bosses. Solidarity- stand together, know your rights, and fight for them like hell. That is how we affect change.

Also always worth investigating whether it’s actually corporate policy or your store manager is on a power trip. When I worked at Cracker Barrel my manager told us cashiers weren’t allowed to keep water behind the register anymore and that we would have to call a manager to be relieved any time we needed water. Bear in mind this was highly discouraged and the managers would complain about how busy they were every time we interrupted them. Of course our managers told us this was a nonnegotiable, top-down rule—out of their hands etc.

I called corporate to anonymously follow up, and lo and behold this was not a top-down policy at all. The next day, a notice went out in our store that cashiers could once again keep our own water behind the register.

one time i read a book with an ambiguous ending and i was GUTTED but i was like okay i do trust the other and how kind they were to these characters. i'm going to believe things go well <3

the book effected me so deeply though and it was the author's debut novel so i was like i'm gonna send fanmail. they had no author website or public email address so the first google result under their name was their linkedin and i saw that they WORKED at the same place as me?? there were thousands of employees so it made sense i wouldn't know. it was just wild to me bc i found the book at a library in another town on the "new release" shelf so it was just a rly funny coincidence to me.

obvs i wasn't sending them fanmail on linkedin but i did find they had an author's facebook page so i sent my fanmail there as appropriate telling them why i loved the book sm. but i was like "hey no pressure but i saw on linkedin that we happen to work in the same place. would i be able to drop my book off in your mailbox to have it signed?"

well they ended up not only responding to me but inviting me to lunch!!! we talked about mostly non-book stuff and it was really fun but then i asked if i could ask a question about the books' ending and they said of course! so i only asked "will the characters be okay?" and they said yes.

so anyway that's the most roundabout way i ever made peace with the ending of a story i love.

A lot of Being Autistic is giving people way too much benefit of the doubt cause you're trying not to have a social anxiety paranoia doom spiral but sometimes they really and truly just are treating you like that & you have to be the crazy one & be like I know you're fucking lying to me

I used to work with a woman who was extremely nasty-mean to me for absolutely no reason at all. She was generally unpleasant to everyone, but it was obvious to me (and to another coworker) that she had something very pointed against me in particular and made it no secret. It got so bad that I made several official complaints, and my supervisor said, "that's just how she talks to everyone. She's super blunt, but she doesn't mean it! Maybe you're just misunderstanding her tone because you're Autistic?"

Later during my 6-month employee review, the same supervisor said, "sometimes when you correct people, you can come on a little too strong and intimidate or offend people."

We went over the specific instances he was referring to, and I said, "I don't think I was unfair or too harsh in any of those situations. I think I was just straightforward for clarity."

He said, "maybe you don't realize your tone is too harsh because you're Autistic?"

So there it is.

If someone's very obviously singling you out to be outright cruel and unfair, you must give them the benefit of the doubt, because you're Autistic and cannot understand.

If you're being straightforward and normal, but someone thinks you're being unfair, you do not get the benefit of the doubt, because you're Autistic and cannot understand.

And when you point this out to allistic people, either they don't believe you, do not care, or do not try to understand.

idk i don't think it's terrible to joke about common themes and even tropes in poetry and fiction. like some things are funny in the way that they pop up so often and are sometimes overdone & hamfisted.

the problem for me is when people on this site post poetry or short prose and someone reblogs it with a joke and that version of the post gets big notes. and that happens on here like every other month.

regardless of whether it's "good" or not, that's someone's art and unless they've already published it, this this is likely the only place they're "publishing" so the comments & tags here will be the only feedback they get.

and if they push back at all, they're portrayed as bad sports. i joined this site as a creative writing blog when i was 15 in 2008 and over the years i've seen so so so many young writers here play along and laugh it off when one of their poems becomes the new joke, because at least then only their writing will be criticized, not them.

i'm not by any means suggesting that no one is rude and terrible to visual artists here as well but i will say there isn't a hugely popular tumblr trend of reblogging someone's drawing and commenting "lol this is corny and stupid" and then that version gets 100,000 notes with everyone agreeing and laughing.

people seem to find it uniquely acceptable to make fun of poetry, something so vulnerable, because it exhibits vulnerability. there are literally "iconic" copypasta memes from this site that were originally teenagers' poems.

i was at a coffee shop in some random town once waiting on my drink. i was the only person there until someone walked in and walked up to the register and they said something crazy like "don't fuck up my order this time, bitch" and i was sooooooo exhausted i stepped forward and i was just like [firm angry mom voice] "no. no. hey. you need to leave right now." and the barista and the customer both turned to me in abject shock and the barista started laughing and the customer looked horrified like they hadn't seen me when they came in and they said "i'm so sorry oh my god I work here. we're friends. i was just messing with them."

and i was like OH! that's a relief.

the barista was still laughing and they said "you were really about to fight for me. i love that." I said was in food service long enough that i'm always ready to fight a customer at any moment. i would have gone for blood. i would've used my teeth.
