The thing about Hadestown is the line “To know how it ends. And still begin to sing it again. As if it might turn out this time” is an incredible way to describe most of life. imagining a guy from like the sixteenth century both astonished at how much less violent and disorderly our society is than his and also that we didn't achieve that mostly through torture and executions. like even if he had qualms about those things he might feel he was forced to admit that if you could ensure they were abused only minimally they might be a necessary evil to discover, punish, and deter violence. and yet his assumptions about not only what works to discover and prosecute crime but how to deter and to prevent it are simply incorrect, to say nothing of the broader factors in how things like judicial torture were inevitably deployed. in the sixteenth century the understanding of how and why people commit violence was simply very bad! makes you wonder what assumptions of ours about violence and crime are going to look very stupid 500 years from now.

"All clothes are gender neutral if you aren't a wuss about it" and "It's perfectly okay if you feel uncomfortable wearing clothes that are typically aligned with a certain gender and want to dress exclusively feminine or masculine" and “regardless of your personal feelings, you have no right to police anyone, cis or trans or nonbinary alike, on what kinds of clothes you think they should or shouldn’t wear” are three concepts that can and should co-exist
