welcome on the Moldflowers collective's sideblog, where some of us – Soren, Montgomery and littles – are fangirling over MCU Loki.

Loki has been a part of our lives for eight years now, ever since we were a neurodivergent little 10 years old kid. we are honestly not really into blockbuster films and the MCU itself, but we had watched all the movies for his sake, and got into mythology and comics as well. he is our favourite character of all time, who has helped us through the hardest times of our life (by getting a lot of headcanons from us). it's certain that we wouldn't be who we are without Loki, but maybe we wouldn't even be alive today if not for him. this blog is created for the purpose of healing and engaging freely in something that truly makes us feel happy and free.

about us:

Soren (they/them, any pronouns): the newest host of the system, who is trying to figure out how to live a free, new, adult life. they don't exactly have an easy job, but hey, at least we get to revisit things that we loved once.

Montgomery (they/she): Monty splitted a few months ago with overflowing creative drive. they help the system actively relax by engaging in creative activities without experiencing the immense internalized shame about them that we generally have. they are also a chill, shapes-and-colours kind of person.

Several littles: the previous hosts with ~ previous loki-phrases ~ are all getting very excited about creating their dream blog. most of them are analysts and artist, but one of them is also a self-shipper, and there is a fanfiction writer as well.

about loki:

we are pretty anti-series because of the mischaracterization (we think that the movies!Loki and series!Loki are simply separate characters), but we are cool with different opinions and we hope that everyone just has fun. we stan bisexual genderfluid loki with changing pronouns, but we don't ship him with other characters. here's the tag for our original posts for him: #moldflowers on loki

I know it's a minor thing to some fans and fic authors, but it gives me a whiplash every time I see Loki being called "Laufeyson" in fics that are specifically based in Asgard, especially when his Jotun heritage is kept hidden or simply not discussed.

It's even funnier when it's a pre Thor 1 fic. (Like why is the Asgardian prince being addressed by the name that suggests he's the son of the Jotun king, who's Asgard's long time enemy? He should be called Odinson not Laufeyson.) He most certainly won't call himself Laufeyson, or let anyone else call him by that name in a setting where his Jotun origins aren't common knowledge.

Moreover, post Thor 1, it's a pretty big deal for Loki, to be called by the name of the father he has no connection with, who, as far as he knows, abandoned him as a baby, who he killed himself, and lastly, who belonged to a people he was taught to hate. He may learn to accept that heritage, slowly, over the course of time, but he most certainly won't call himself Laufeyson. Even in The Dark World, he called himself "Loki of Jotunheim" and not Laufeyson when he was trying to lure the dark elves into trusting him with handing over Jane.

To some extent, the same logic applies to the name Odinson as well. But Loki uses it based on convenience. Plus it's the name everyone knows him by in Asgard, and there's no reason for him to reject it pre Thor 1, or even afterwards. Unless it's someone really close to him or someone who understands his strained relationship with Odin, he won't bring it up.

What he usually goes by, post Thor 1, is Loki of Asgard, even though, in his perspective, he doesn't belong there either. But it's a connection that most people know of, hence he uses it based on that.

Idk where I'm going with this post, just sharing my annoyance I guess. I know that post TDW stuff is also on shaky ground regarding this issue, but I'm not going there. I don't even consider the series as canon.

I genuinely believe that the majority of the misconceptions about Loki's character in the MCU come down to the viewers paying attention to what is said on screen rather than what is shown on screen. Aka taking what other characters (that have their own biases and a limited knowledge on the subject) say about Loki + what Loki says about himself (his perception of himself is skewed, partially because of how other characters treat him) at face value (except for the times when Loki expresses his genuine emotions and vulnerabilities. Then suddenly he's "lying". To the walls of an empty room, apparently), rather than observing his actions and overall behavior.

Which unfortunately is not just something that people do with fictional characters, but in real life too.

Hot take but I think that one of the main causes of MCU!Loki's tendency to sacrifice himself all the time and put himself into dangerous situations/get into abusive relationships, is because he has this belief that has been forced onto him since he was a kid that his existence is in service to someone else, and that he owes the world for being allowed to exist.

T1 script has a scene of Frigga telling Odin that it's ok to make Thor king despite him clearly not being ready for this role because Loki will be there to guide and help him. And, looking at the relationship the brothers share, it's so clear that Loki was always raised with this expectation of taking care of Thor. Thor ALWAYS runs to Loki with his problems, even when they haven't talked in over a year, Thor vents to Loki, Thor decides where they're gonna go and what's they're gonna do, the people they both hang out with are Thor's friends, etc. Loki doesn't do any of this, in fact, I cannot recall a singular time Loki would ask for help/bring up his problems around Thor. Moreover, each time Loki expresses any kind of an emotional need or acts unhappy, Thor gets angry, and even violent. Tell me what kind of dynamic it portrays to you. Damn, Thor doesn't even look at Loki while talking to him in T1. ("Never doubt I love you" - "Thank you").

Then there's Odin and Frigga consistently holding the fact they "love" him and, in Odin's case, "didn't let him die" over his head, in both T1 and TDW, to guilt him into obeying them and acting the way they want him to, to remind him that he's "obligated" to be grateful and helpful.

The Other tells him that he owes Thanos for the "great purpose" and his own enslavement.

Then there's Mobius telling him that he was born for the sake of the avengers' success and "to make people into the best versions of themselves". He also holds the "I didn't lat you die" card over his head and tortures him for "being a bad friend" for "running away", etc.

Like, at any given opportunity, Loki is reminded that his existence is in service of other people, he's discouraged from having feelings, or even acting in self-preservation/making decisions that do not result in someone else directly benefiting from.

Of course he will be so quick to sacrifice himself and get into abusive relationships.

MCU!Loki can't breathe without an evil organization/warlord deciding they want him for whatever reasons and, unfortunately for the multiverse, that's everyone's problem.

One of my favorite takes some people present when talking about Loki's character is that he's self-centered/self-absorbed.

Which is an interesting thing to say about a character that spends the first third of T1 looking out for people who don't like him, while ignoring his own discomfort, then spends a chunk of TDW protecting a woman who doesn't like him and who has slapped him across the face, then ends up being the ONLY person taking up the responsibility of restoring a half-destroyed city that Thor left behind to be with his gf, then helps and in fact saves people who didn't gaf about him AND a brother who tortured and left him to die (because Grandmaster WOULD kill him) like 30 minutes ago, a girl who threw bottles at his head, and his former enemy, all without expecting a mere "thanks" in return. Oh, he also spends a good portion of all of his screentime, from T1 to LS, giving people pep talks, and basically being their therapist.

I do find it fascinating how quick people are to call someone who doesn't simply suck up and tolerate the abuse and mistreatment in silence self-centered. Because yeah, he complains about the way he is treated. A lot. Guess why? Because the way he is treated is never changed, and you would rather call him selfish and annoying for not shutting up rather than blame the people who won't stop mistreating him.

And no, mental breakdowns as a result of mistreatment, as well as reactive abuse (and Loki actually does a lot of that, imo) is not an act that proves self-absorption, if you ask me.

was thinking abt Loki in tdw only introducing himself to Jane by his first name, and how unusual that is for him. it's usually at least something following that, even in Avengers 1 he still calls himself Of Asgard, even tho he's very much not aligned with them at the moment. him just introducing himself as Loki is very unique in that way, and I think very emblematic of where he is at in general, then, not considering himself anything in particular other than just Loki, and then it hit me that he probably doesn't know how Thor tends to refer to him then either. He doesn't know how Thor described him to Jane.

I wonder if he wondered if he used Laufeyson.

Just watched a video essay about Steve and they finished by trying to justify his ending 😐

Their argument was that since the war the avengers were fighting (Thanos) was gone, Steve didn't have to keep fighting anymore. Tell me you don't understand Steve without telling me you don't understand Steve.

I do like the idea of his ending involving the idea of not needing to fight anymore, but in the sense that he doesn't need keep physically fighting. Him realising that there's other ways to save the world that don't involve him getting hurt (this is a good conflict that could happen between him and Bucky post cacw). Not him deciding that he doesn't give a shit about anyone else and just does something to make him happy. Not that his ending would actually make the real Steve happy. It's really fun being a fan of a character that a lot of people don't get.

Anyway I'm gonna go read some stucky fics to feel better.

AGHH I hate that! I hate when you stumble upon what seems to be a good essay for the character you love, only for it to crash and burn in the end and get that character completely wrong.

I've said this before and I'll say it again, Steve Rogers is not a fighter. He is a defender. He defends the weak and helpless, the little guys all over the world. He stands for justice and doing what's right. He gives people hope. If there are still people in need of him, in any way shape or form, he is going to keep protecting and fighting for them. Put Steve Rogers in a world where millions of people that have been dead for 5 years suddenly return?? Where all those people have to grapple with their deaths, their resurrections, and the repercussions that came with it?? Where there are countless people that are still dead and will remain dead due to those millions of people being killed in the first place (newborns, elderly, and disabled that were suddenly without their parents and caregivers, passengers on planes/in cars that suddenly had no pilots/drivers, etc)?? (Thanks for that, Tony!!!) Steve would help repair the damages in any way he could.

Is he selfless to a fault? Could he stand to be more selfish? Yeah, I would say so. But that doesn't mean he would just abandon his friends and his team to go back to the past. Even if he was in love with Peggy (which I heavily doubt he would be, but that's another topic for another post), he still would never do it.

Steve Rogers' whole character is about moving forward, despite his grief and the isolation he must feel. His story is about moving forward and forming new reasons to live, even if it's hard. It's about finding a new beginning for yourself in the face of an unfamiliar and unforgiving world. Steve found just that via the Avengers and, even more fittingly, Team Cap. Sam and Natasha were his best friends. Clint, Scott, and T'Challa were trusted allies. Wanda was his budding protege (maybe even his little sister figure) and someone he was fiercely protective of. And Bucky? Bucky was his soulmate. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. Whether you viewed their relationship as strictly platonic or romantic, Bucky was without a doubt the one Steve would burn the world for. He was Steve's sole connection to his past and the vital part to a life in the future.

And you're telling me that Steve would leave Sam the shield without any guidance, during a time that is extremely chaotic? That he would throw Natasha's sacrifice away like trash? That he would leave Clint and Wanda, who were both grieving over the people they couldn't get back despite everything? That he would abandon Bucky--the one he fought against Thanos for in the first place--in a world still unfamiliar to him after he just got him back? That he would do all of that for a woman he already canonically moved on from? A woman who lived her own life and had a family of her own?? A woman who literally told Steve herself that the best thing for him was to start over and move on??? You're telling me Steve would just...rip away her agency, go against her wishes, and claim her like a prize to be won, simply because his fight was over and he deserved it???

You're telling me that Steve Rogers would stay in that past--a past that includes segregation, racism, and gender inequality--with the knowledge that his best friend since childhood is actively being kept as a prisoner of war and is being horrifically tortured and that Hydra is alive and well and preparing to infest the country....and he would do nothing about any of that???

No. That's fucking bullshit. And it always will be bullshit, because that goes against everything Steve Rogers is.

I've seen this be said before and I think it was very fitting, so I shall repeat it to the best of my memory now;

Steve Rogers would sooner choose the picket line over a picket fence.

steve's ending in the MCU strangely fits with the rise of fascism in the USA.

The writers assume that Steve feels nostalgia and idealism about that time, and that he wants the things that were cultural ideals to want. They assume that returning to the 1940's is a "happy ending" for Steve.

Never mind the ongoing existence of segregation, never mind the Cold War, never mind the atrocities committed by the USA, all that matters is this sense of nostalgia for an idealized past.

It's impossible to ignore the role of gender here-- Steve returns to the 1940's to gain access to a woman, with full knowledge that she would later find love and live a full life without him, emphasizing that his own desires and his own choices are the only ones that matter.

It indicates that the writers feel that Steve would quietly accept his position of privilege in society and benefit from the inequality and subjugation of others, which is the exact opposite of his characterization where Steve is selected for the super soldier program because he knows what it's like to be weak, and he wants to fight because he "doesnt like bullies"

the MCU couldn't follow through on the actual implications of this character as he was portrayed because they would lose funding from the Department of Defense :|

Loki's costumes are extremely important to me, and i have been working on my own designs for a while now.

i think Loki's clothes carry a big part of their characterization, which is an excellent writing choice, given his limited screen time in the movies. It's important to note that while maintaining their regal elegance via the layering, and their arrogance by the permanent colour scheme, their outfits still often come off as rebellious and edgy because of the materials used and placed. a bit of effort is required to translate this well-harmonized style into midgardian clothing.

to answer your question, i will go through the most characteristic details of Loki's clothes (or at least the ones they chose for themselves, and as usual, I'll be picky about the series). I will focus on masculine/androgyn clothing, because feminine outfits would deserve their own post.

first and foremost, what makes a Loki outfit is the golden U or V shape on the chest.

in canon, this is swapped to a scarf, or the cleavage of a vest, or a clip on a necktie for more casual wear.

we can steal these useful ideas and add some more.

the second most important thing is the cross lines, either symmetrical or overlapping.

one can go wild on this one.

the next step is the "calla lily" collar, also almost always present.

obvious translation choice is high collars of any kinds, but i am going to demonstrate some varieties.

also, do not forget about the shoulder plates! These give that familiar silhouette of theirs.

in more comfortable outfits, padded shoulders are perfectly enough, but if one wants to dress this brooding prince more fancy, it's okay to add some epaulettes.

last, but not least, Loki's cape or coat. Not a must in comfortable wear, but certainly pretty characteristic otherwise.

give them their trench coats, suits, tailcoats, or even just sweaters tied around their waist!

further items include: silver studs; high black leather boots/dress shoes; zip-ups; and occasionally, fingerless gloves.

there are some other things i noticed, which are good to keep in mind when designing an outfit for Loki. For example, the less layers they wear, the more vulnerable they are: he was the most guarded in Thor1 and in the Avengers, and the least guarded after Frigga's death; he only wore one layer on Sakaar, after Odin's death; and he wore lots of layers at the very end of the Loki series.

another note is that their outfits get more asymmetrical when they get to be themself; when they are in hiding, or just in disguise, or whenever they just really have to behave, they only have one or two asymmetrical bits on their clothes.

Loki, of course, would mostly keep their usual green-black-gold composition, occasionally throwing a bit of silver in there, but i also think they would stay true to their favourite materials: mostly (faux) leather, wool, and dare i say, fur!

also, the undershirt he was wearing under his illusion in the asgardian prison cell was a material alike hemp – i think that's a good start for a sleep-attire, in contrast with the fandom-wide idea of silk pajamas (which always icked me; if Loki wanted to wear silk, they already would have. I hc they just have a beef with the texture, because i do too.)

if i were to give Loki a midgardian wardrobe, I would start with innumerable amount of black leather pants and boots (cunty, edgy, and they always wear them). I'd also give them studded belts and wristbands, a scarf, neckties (not bowties!!) of several colours, zip-up hoodies, leather jackets, and suits. For sleep, i am pretty sure Loki would wear a green polo shirt with trousers, but only if they wouldn't rather sleep in a hoodie.
