The pelican in its piety is a common motif in medieval Christian art:

Ergo, in turn, it became the crest of Corpus Christi… and you can see it over the fireplace in one of Morse and Thursday’s interviews with Richardson. So I’d argue that the script is deliberately bringing it to mind for us even before the scene with Bright. And then, of course, we get Bright’s willingness to do the right thing, to sacrifice his position to do so, coming around to save him in the end. And the fact that we get to see Bright, whom we know as a bereaved father, bringing delight to a crowd of small children, and turning to a little girl with raven braids to listen and speak to her. As I say, I wept.
