Slow fashion is important to us. We believe in buying better, buying less, and buying less often. We carry premium quality products from designers who care. We want you to stand out. We want your everyday apparel to be fresh, unique, and start conversations. We don’t think there is any one way to manufacture better. We think the path to a more sustainable global society is many-pronged. Some of our designers manufacture in the US; some use recycled or especially eco-friendly materials; some manufacture in low-impact facilities; some recycle their own products; some are primarily focused on fair labor practices. INTERVIEW WITH WILBY CO-FOUNDER JAMIE BOLTON-DEBBAGE

The UK-based vegan brand Wilby makes gorgeous clutches, totes, wallets, rucksacks, and cross-body bags that are completely free of animal products. Wilby designs are sleek, sophisticated, and bold, often incorporating bright colors and dazzling hardware. These luxurious bags feature lavish detailing, like brilliant gold zippers branded with the company's logo. Wilby manufactures entirely within the UK and incorporates sustainable textiles as often as possible, including innovative materials like cork leather. Having had a few years to admire the Wilby bags floating around HQ, we, the Lookie Lou staff, adore Wilby. Unfortunately, we find that many American vegans haven't heard of the brand. We interviewed Wilby co-founder Jamie Bolton-Debbage to learn more about Wilby and help us introduce this fantastic cruelty-free brand to American ethical shoppers.

LL: Who are the founders of Wilby? Jamie: Myself and Lucy Housmann, who is also the Head Designer.​

LL: What inspired you to start Wilby? Jamie: We were interested in creating sustainable and vegan products that also had an element of sexuality and sleekness.

LL: The clutch seems like an underappreciated accessory. When you launched in 2013, what led you focus on the clutch? Jamie: We wanted to keep things simple and in 2013 the clutch was all of the rage. The brand has evolved since then and we now may even be going into clothes.

LL: What three words describe your design aesthetic? Jamie: British, sustainable, zeitgeist

LL: From where do you draw inspiration for your collections? Jamie: A wide range of sources but we do like high fashion houses and we always look around the London area to see what would work.

LL: Who are your favorite fashion designers? Jamie:: At the moment Oliver Rousteg at Balmain and Alexander Wang are killing it. Lucy will always have a fondness for Vivienne (Westwood).

LL: Please tell us about the cork leather used in the Primrose Hill set! Jamie: Cork is great because it is peeled from the bark of the trees and then it regenerates. It is so much more sustainable than cow leather or oil based vegan leather, which is the main vegan alternative. You can also see this in the Bailey Collection. Meg Mathews, the ex-wife of Noel Gallagher, designed the Primrose Hill Set.

LL: What challenges do you face in producing and marketing vegan fashion? Jamie: Some people expect an exact leather type feel which is impossible with the cork. There is also the perception that cows' leather is a better quality which is untrue as there are so many different types of vegan leather out there.

LL: What’s next for Wilby? Jamie: There are a few ideas but we will be evolving into different design areas, watch this space!
