I decided that it was time to cut out the pieces for a new dress project :)

The mental images I got... love 'em!
Photo taken during a viking photoshoot in Löderup Strandbad in the south east of Sweden this weekend.

You have been requesting more clothing photos here, so I want to show you my latest project. This is a gift for my mother, and I'm trying a new nålbinding technique where you braid the edge. I learnt it from this blog (, and decided to give it a go.
Kintaat minulle. Mittens for me. Näin kuvan neulakinnastekniikalla tehdystä lettikoristeesta kintaissa. Oli aivan pakko kokeilla, miten se
This is the second new technique I try with this project. The other one is called Russian join, which is a technique used to join two ends of yarn together. Usually, with nålbinding, you splice the ends togehter, but that is not always possible (like with this yarn, for some odd reason - it is 100 % wool and not superwash, so theoretically it should work, but it doesn't 🙄 ).
So, anyway, all in all, I'm quite happy with it, despite the smaller mistakes I made. But then again, a friend told me that the Irish say that all handmade projects need to have some small flaws. You usually put your heart and soul into making them, and the flaws allow it to get back out 😉
Where is this place? I want to go to a larp here.
people on tumblr tend to be pretty good about the whole “you should pay artists thing” but i just want to put out there: that includes fibre artists
i can’t count the number of times i’ve been knitting or embroidering something and someone is like “oh can you make me one?” and then they get offended when i tell them they’d have to pay me.
real talk: nice yarn/wool is expensive. sewing machines are expensive. for every handmade skirt or stuffed animal you see online there are at least a half-dozen prototypes in the creator’s closet that can’t be sold.
and that’s not even getting into the time spent on these projects. i have some things i’ve probably spent in excess of 100 hours on. i can’t even fathom making a living wage knitting stuff, because nobody would ever pay that much.
tl:dr; fibre artists deserve to be paid for their time and skill just like visual artists and if you can “buy something just like that at walmart for $5″ please just do that and stop wasting our time
I agree with this. I’d also like to add that in my experience, this goes for most type of crafts. People think it’s expensice, but they have no idea how much time and effort it takes to make things by hand.
When I talk to people about money, most agree that a good and reasonable hourly wage is around 100 SEK. For me, to make a dress completely by hand (i.e. the last one I made for my larp costume), takes about 15 hours, but that’s just the sewing. That does not include the time I spent choosing and preparing fabrics, or the cost for the material itself.
So, let’s add another five hours of work, and 3 meter wool, app. 300 SEK/meter. What I actually _should_ be paid for a handmade dress would be (20*100)+(3*300)=2000+900=2900 SEK.
This is how we should value handmade things. They take time and effort. Given this, 2900 SEK is a lot of money, but it’s not expensive for these kind of clothes.
So, I promised some more costume photos. This is part of the clothes I made for Dis, my Kir-character.
Kir, or Kampen i Ringen (The combat in the Ring - yeah, it sounds better in Swedish :p ) is a viking larp campaign that is been runnings since around 2002-2003, with at least 3 larps each year. The largest and longest one is in July.
I went to Kir the first time in 2008, and since 2009 I have played Dis Långe, for whom these clothes were made.
Dis is a gydja, and she was forced to marry a priest for political reasons. She was not very happy about that, but her brother (who is also the head of the Långe family) bribed her a bit with money for good wedding clothes.
So, I made a yellow dress in thin wool, and with brokade on the sleeves. The fabric is checkerd, which could have been used during the viking era. Some findings of uni-coloured checkered fabrics have been made. I chose yellow because it is one of Långes colours. The dress is held in place by the neck with a pin shaped like a snake.
The apron dress is made of a thicker blue wool, because blue is Dis' favourite colour. I used the same brokade as for the dress. For the hems I used a beige wool yarn that complimentes the brokade. The beads were also chosen for Dis and goes mostly in blue and green. She also has the needle house that was given to her as a bethroval gift from her husband.
Both dresses are sewn by hand.
The red belt is also made by hand, but not by me. It was made to me by a friend, and is based on a pattern found in a similar belt from Birka.
I also made a gown in fine, thin, white wool. I did not wear this as the photo shoot however, since it was very warm that day. Instead, I'm wearing a gown made in half linen-half cotton. It was also made for Dis, but for the first larp.
This photo was taken in Visby in August 2019, by Emelie Axelsson.
My favorite larp photo from this year. This was a reconstruction of a scene that took place in the middle of the night, since the Norse religion is forbidden in Hunaland (evil Norwegian people!).
My character is a gydja, and she was asked by two of her closest friends, Moda and Haldur, to marry them. Naturally she said yes, so we brouhgt along another close friend, Erak, as a witness and for protection.
After the larp, we arranged a photo session with the fantastic Hanna Olsson. (You should look her up on the linl below!).

Oooo! I love the costumes everyone is wearing. Can’t see it very well, but the detail on the pouch the lady on the left is wearing is intriguing. I’ve been to a LARP with a friend of mine and got to play a villager. It was so fun! My friend makes all her own outfits for it, and had made the clothes I wore, too. Makes me want to get into a bit of costuming.
Glad you like it :)
If you want to, I can see if I can make some more clothing posts with more details.
And yes, costume-making is fun! I have quite some stuff at home, but I still come up witj new ideas of new things I want to make.
It would be super cool to see more of your costume handiwork! I’m hoping to make a costume or two with my friend and then I’d like to embroider on them to add detail. We’ll see how that goes. :)
Ok then, I'll see what I can do :)

Truth
Or alone.. whatever works for you.
But... alone would be with the right person :)
Spent the evening doing some larp-related letterwriting 😊
I want to make a ton of new original costumes/larp gears but I’ve no idea where to start really. Posting some shit I’ve done over the past few years. Troll in snow - 2010 Dark Elf - 2010 Desert Elf/High Elf (my most viewed on dA) - 2012 High Elf mage - 2012 Faerie of Vanity (still a WiP) - 2012
I have some other things that I haven’t got to take pictures of yet. All of the above are my original designs and not any of my cosplays. All so far worn at at least 1 larp. This post doesn’t even cover everything I’ve done. For more shit: http://headclouds.deviantart.com/ https://www.facebook.com/DarkesttearsDesign
That blue High Elf-dress is amazing! I want to make something like that too!
Sooo... what larp could I go to where I can use that? 😛
10 years. 2009. Or, if you like, 1111. That was the first time I played Dis Berulvsdotter Långe. So incredibly much has happened during that time. I have met so many people during that time that has helped define her. I started making a list, but it got too long.
Kampen i Ringen is my "home campaign" - the one I always prioritize. Berghem and Hunaland is my second home and will always have a huge place in my heart. There have been several tears, both in and off, but also so much love and laughter that makes me want to come back, again and again. Or to use Dis own words, that she uttered Saturday night: Hunaland is always worth it.
10 years. It's been a good run. Let's aim for the next ten.
Thank you 💟
(Oh, and by the way, this is her wedding outfit, that I've been working very hard on the past months).
Layer 2 of my Kir-characters wedding clothes. Thin wool fabric and brocade, all hand sewn.
