Hello :) I am almost done with all the books, just working on Tales of the Fallen Beasts and The Book of Shane. My profile picture is a variation on my Redcloak oc. My favorite pov is Rollan, and my favorite book is Fire and Ice (Book 4, I like the angst)

Back in the day I worked at a certain very famous and very high caste art museum in the US as a junior curator. Part of my job was to catalog the objects in the museum database. This includes details like provenance, measurements, and a visual description of what the object looked like.
Like I said, the museum was a pretty snotty institution. Itās got a LOT of objects itās way famous for possessing, but nobody knew about the absolutely massive collection of Moche erotic pottery it had because the curators were totally embarrassed by this stuff.
Some examples:
Pretty hot shit, right? They never, ever put any of this stuff on public view or published it in any catalogues but - we legit had like several hundred pieces of Moche ceramics in theĀ ādirty potsā category. Anyway, I was left alone to just do my job with regard to the database for several years, ok? And I figured, well, theseāre accessioned objects in the museumās collection - better get down to bidness.Ā
I catalogued every goddamn bestiality, necrophiliac, cocksucking, buttfucking, detached penis, and giant vulva drinking cup in that collection. Iād be like,Ā
A drinking vessel in form of a standing man wearing a tunic and cap. He holds an oversized erection in his hands and stares into the distance (note I did not say ālike heās hella-constipatedā). The vessel has a hole at both the tip of the penis as well as around the rim of the figureās head, thus forcing the drinker to drink only from the penis or risk spilling wine all over themselves from the top of the vessel. Red and orange slip covers the surface of the piece.
Pretty straightforward, right? Apparently the deep seated fear of these objects that the curators exhibited was meant to spread to me as well, but - no one ever gave me that memo, because I guess Midwesterners reproduce asexually. When the curators understood that I had catalogued all of these objects in addition to the other, non-sexy pieces in the collection, they were apparently livid, but knew they had no legs to stand on in terms of getting pissed at me for it.Ā
I visited the museumās online public access database a few years back and - every single description I wrote of these pieces has been totally neutered to say something like Male figural vase.Ā
Long story short? Just call a dildo a fucking dildo. Itās all gonna be ok, I swear.

Museums should have sections dedicated to artifacts like these with a warning that says āThereās a lot of private parts in here but weāre dedicated to displaying history so we wonāt censor these. Enter at your own riskā or something. Itās prudish to deliberately hide history because of some ding dongs.

Details abt how the kids are still relatively sheltered. For example Abeke was all freaked out during fire and ice since sheād never been exposed to hail. Also Rollan didnāt know what a walrus was. Thereās also the really cute scene of Abeke describing Tarik helping her learn abt animals outside of Niloan oneās (a little ways into Against the tide? I think)
Literally all of the side characters. Maya, Finn, Lishay like omggg I would read a book abt any one of them: like wdym Finn had four brothers all marked? That Maya had pyrokinesis? Lishay and her twin brother Hanzan who trained with young Tarik???
Tarikās funeral scene š now look he was my favorite character but all of his friends gathering to say goodbye and telling stories made my heart freaking ache. Iām pretty sure itās canon that most of them were trained together (outside of Lenori and Olvan I think. Not sure about Kalani or Maya because they are a bit younger). ļæ¼
How many people summon spirit animals but donāt go to the green cloaks. I also find it interesting that some donāt offer much reasoning. One thing that really sticks with me is the prisoner Rollan talked too and he said he had a hedgehog but then it died. When Rollan asked he responded with āyou see any cloak?ā Is this saying that maybe he was a green cloak but then got kicked out for his spirit animal dying? Because it sounds like to me he was one but then either gave up or was forced to give up his role? (Because if so holy fuck that is so wrong. Like imagine Lishay being kicked out because she lost Zhosur in a battle for THEM. Idk this whole scene makes me question a lot of stuff abt the green cloaks).
Barlow and his whole āare they too young for this?ā Mindset. He was a good character in the sense of trying to protect the kids. Itās also interesting to see that Tarik was still thinking about that months later during Against the Tide
My thoughts exactly. Still thinking about how Doiran? (Book 7 guy, spoilers), Lishay, and Tarik where probably all part of the same "class" of sorts. The angst that Lishay must feel after arc 1. Also, Barlow's "please don't hire kids for life into your orginization and send them on missions" opinion works in the context of the current conflicts, but what happened before that that caused some children to die or be harmed? What where the Greencloaks having those children do during peacetime?!
Okay so because this important to me a general overview of what I think a green cloak path is (when ur not a great beast summoner and/or apart of some prophecy).
1. Spirit animal gets summoned. Typically hangs out in hometown for around a year or so allowing the bond to grow stronger independently. 1.5 if not able to stay at home (ex: its abusive, not enough food, donāt have a home, or filling a prophecy) you can go to green haven. But typically youāll just fill a small role of like chores or smth. Itās really just a holding period till youāre around 14 which is when training really kicks in. 1.7 the four fallen are the exception because yk their was a war happening and their presence was vital
2. You arrive and get assigned a permanent mentor (assuming youāre fourteen). Anyone from 11-19 years old will get one and have one( if under eleven the bond wonāt be as prominent but it will still exist mostly in the forms of advice/check ins). It also tends to be a one on one dynamic. For Tarik and the four fallen their bond happened due to the war and the fact the kids were sort of a package deal. I also feel like since resources were stretched so thin Olvan didnāt have enough warriors to spare (so he just grabbed his best one+ the one that acted the most fatherly and was like here these are your kids now). The mentor is basically a foster parent and makes sure you get the right training but also protection, care, and resources for success (medical care, meals, someone to talk to etc). 2.5 to be a mentor you need to be a well respected warrior ideally a few years past 20, thereās no set in stone age but. You also need to prove your loyalty and that you can actually handle having a young human around
3. Generally from the ages of 14-19 (again 11-14 is basically a holding period to let you physically and emotionally mature at green haven, focus on your spirit animal bond) is basically a āduckling periodā. Meaning your essentially your mentors shadow and follow them around on various missions. 3.5 missions start small-escorting, security checkpoints and/or guarding and work their way up to a full scale task such as a battle, talisman retrieval and/or tracking. As you age your mentor gradually increases your training and shows you more and more how to harness the spirit animal connection. I should add that if you need the help of another green cloak thatās allowed, your just primarily your mentors responsibility-great way for them to network and do training exercises for people of lower skill levels. Again we saw this dynamic with Tarik+his four. Itās also a safety thing cause you know no one wants an eleven year old left in charge of a rhino unsupervised
4. Throughout mentorship large part of it is observation-making sure you can actually be happy and useful and what not as a warrior. Every six months or so your evaluated on a few things-combat, spirit animal bond, and overall emotional stability. If your mentor notices something off theyāll report it to Olvan and if necessary talk to you about a role swap-you can be a cook, healer, guard, scout or something like that. But if you want to keep your benefits youāve got to do something useful (which doesnāt necessarily mean a warrior). Downside is to this that if you do need to swap roles it usually means loosing a mentor which youāve already grown attached to and starting over from the beginning. Just know that if you decide to permanently leave the green cloaks they can still contact you for help but youād also loose the benefits of being one.
5. Warrior ceremony. Your now cut loose off your mentor and fully a warrior which is an annual ceremony and feasting event. 5.5 Problem is that most kids do not want this like at all. Like that is your adopted mom/dad and chances are youāll try to stick by them even if they get a new assignment, which can go really well or badly depending on the warrior.
6. During peace time? Usually just like friendly neighborhood green cloaks. Help the poor, stop robberies, rebuild towns that are in need etc.
I may add to this later but these are my rough thoughts about green cloak training-and yes this means Tarik wasnāt truly in a war until he was around 14 years old. He also uses many of his mentors techniques on the four fallenā¦.+ his mentor ended up giving his life for Tarik and his friends Lishay and Dorian which Tarik follows in his footsteps with his kids giving them one final gesture of protection and teaching :(

Love all of this. I just wish how the Greencloaks function was expanded upon more. Besides the citadel in HotL, do the nations have any checks and balances in place for them, or each other? The Greencloaks are theoreticly suppost to stay out of politics. I crave lore
