Mirko who is "Maria" in Uomini Donne?
She is the āØGoddess, Queen and Saviour of Mediaset šøš¼āØ
This is Maria De Filippi š in the 90ā²s š¤ :
This is her now: āØšøš¼āØ
Sheās aĀ television host and creator of loads of original programmes! šš¼ She is most famous for Uomini e Donne, Amici and CāĆØ posta per te. Sheās married to Maurizio Costanzo šØš», television host and journalist.
They both work for the same broadcasterā šŗ Mediaset, the largest broadcaster in Italy, owned by Silvio Berlusconi š¤š¤š¤
As Iāve explained elsewhere, Uomini e Donne is about people sitting on thrones ā¼ļø and dating a bunch of attractive people at The šš¼ Same šš¼ Time šš¼āāļøāØ in order to subsequently leave the programme and start their relationship with the person they fell in love with ššØāā¤ļøāšØššš
Amici is sort of as if š ±ļøig š ±ļørother and X-Factor had a š ±ļøabyā¦ šš®š¹ Itās a house/school where these really talented people live all together and study to become a singer or dancer šš» until the nightly episodes where they all wear nice outfits and duet with literally everyone famous in existence
CāĆØ posta per te⦠is the best programme of all time. People send anonymous invitations to the programme and if the other person is down theyāll talk through a huge envelopeā¦.. Iām not kiddingā¦. Thereās usually a lot of family drama involved so we all goĀ š when itās an interesting storyā¦. š
She also created a programme called Temptation Island⦠and one called Selfie (which is great), where people who are really insecure about their body are given free surgery to help them fix what they donāt like about their body. Plus the programme features a moving mirror called Robertino Robottino (literally: Little Robert Little Robot)
Ā whose entrance is announce in the funniest way (0.21)
Wait a sec what is temptation island like
Straight Couples With Issues go on an island where they get separated and put with tons of attractive boys and girls respectively in order to test them. At some point either the boy or the girl watched a video of how their partner is behaving and if theyāre acting flirty with someone else they break up ~
oh my god i fucking knew it we have it here too and i hate it
lmao temptation island

Hey all! This poem is part of my chapbook Miss Translated, which I produced in a limited run as Town Hall Seattleās Spring 2017 artist-in-residence. The main conceit behind this work is that to accurately portray my relationship with Spanish, I have to explore the pain and ambiguity of not speaking the language of my grandparents and ancestors. As a result, these poems are bilingual ⦠sort of. Each one is translated into English incorrectly.
The poems I produced have secrets, horrific twists, emotional rants, and confessions hiding in the Spanish. Itās my hope that people can appreciate them regardless of their level of Spanish proficiency.
oh shit.Ā my spanish is pretty shaky, but iām pretty sure āte perdonoā isĀ āi forgive you.āĀ wow understanding just that much is pretty chilling.
and something aboutā¦blood? and transformation?Ā oooh yikes.Ā she didnāt want legs in the spanish version did she.Ā and it was a painful process.
so this poem is aboutā¦misunderstandings leading to pain for the person misunderstood?Ā whish is really effective with the way itās written, wow.Ā this is the most meta poem form iāve ever seen.Ā wow.
#reblog#photoset#poetry#i later ran it thru google translate to confirm my theories#wonāt post said translation or say how right i was#cuz i feel like thatās missing the point
<ā This right here is AMAZING. Look at the journey this person went on reading my poem! Secret fact, I have been stalking tags and reblogs of this because what I wanted more than anything was to provide an experience for people and LOOK AT YOU ALL GO. Your engagement and enthusiasm is amazing and so humbling for me.
Holy crap, this is incredible. As a natively bilingual Latina woman, allow me to dive into a full analysis.
First, I should tell you my experience of reading this. I didnāt even look at the English at first, because I didnāt know that the mistranslation was the point, and of course I didnāt need it. So I read the whole poem in Spanish and thought it was really sad and moving. Then I looked at the English and my eyebrows went right up to my hairline. Why the hell would you translate it this way, I thought.Ā
Then I read the caption and realized that this is a genius way of demonstrating how translation into English can be an act of colonization and violence.
I would translate the first two lines asĀ āThe mermaid rose from the sea / To see the dry world.ā Theyāre very neutral lines. She was curious about the dry world, so she went to check it out. Thatās a very different connotation from the mistranslation, which tells you that the mermaid preferredĀ the land to the sea.
The second two lines I would say meanĀ āShe found a fisherman on the beach / this beautiful fish without a net.ā Sheās the one with agency here, not the fisherman, and she thinks of herself as a free fish, unconstrained by a net, not as a fish without a home.
The next three lines by my lights readĀ āShe had a gleaming tail; scales / that covered her breasts, arms, and face / and a wake of lacy waves.ā Again, itās from her perspective, not the fishermanās, and she thinks of herself as having a gleamingĀ rather than oilyĀ tail, a lacyĀ wake rather than a frothingĀ one.
Next stanza:Ā āThe fisherman caught her by the tail / and cut it in half.ā From her point of view, the fisherman has committed a sudden and senseless mutilation. Then he goes,Ā āāNow,ā he said to her,Ā āyou have legs. / Why donāt you walk?āā Itās almost like an accusation. You have legs now, why donāt you just get up and walk?
My read on the next stanza is:Ā āThe mermaid began to sing to the sea / for aid, her blood transforming / the sand of the beach into rainbows.ā The sea is her home, not the land, and sheās crying out to her home in pain as she bleeds.
Then the poem ends withĀ āShe sang to the fisherman,Ā āI forgive you, I forgive you, I forgive you.āā
The reason this mistranslation is so brilliant is that it takes a story about a mermaid trying to forgive a man whoās committed senseless violence against her, and turns it into a story about a man who uplifts a woman to a better life out of the kindness of his heart. And the thing is, thatās exactly what happens to so many stories from colonized cultures when theyāre adapted by the oppressor. Translation into English, and further the cultural language of the oppressor, can be an act of violence and erasure rather than one of respect.
This is why I have worked so hard to translate poetry from Spanish to English that has previously only been translated by white Americans who learned Spanish in college. I can bring something to the translation that they canāt. Itās usually not this extreme, but this exists to some degree in all translations by people who donāt truly understand the culture that produced the work theyāre translating.

bonjour! since i started teaching myself french a few months ago, i thought it would be a good idea to immerse myself by listening to some french music. a lot of french music, actually. here are some of my favorites! (requested by @athenastudying)
cÅur de pirateĀ
my absolute favorite french artist at the moment! her songs are more on the melancholy side, but they have a lovely vintage vibe. also her music videos are v creative so definitely check those out as well!Ā faves: crier tout bas, adieu, ensemble
indila
iām not usually crazy about indie pop in english but I love indilaās music in french! her songs have a good beat and i often find myself belting out her songs during my solo dance parties. oops. faves: derniĆØre danse, tourner dans le vide, sos
stromae
stromaeās music is actually one of the things that inspired me to start learning french!! his music is a blend of hip hop and electronic, which isnāt usually my thing, but i absolutely adore his music. faves: papaoutai, tous les memes, alors on danse
mika
his songs are super catchy and upbeat! i listened toĀ āboum boum boumā for the first time (w the music video) when i knew about four words of french and ended up thinking it was about guns? (spoiler alert: itās about sex), but i still love it. p sure these are his only two songs in french but i have played them on repeat more times than i care to admit.Ā faves: elle me dit, boum boum boum
frƩro delavega
i only discovered their music recently (FrĆ©ro Delavega is a two-man duo), and it took me about 0.3 seconds to fall in love with their songs. their songs have a lot of great harmony, and theyāre lighthearted and fun to listen to. faves: mon petit pays, ton visageĀ
joyce jonathan
another recent find! i like to play her music on my phone when i walk to school in the mornings because itās p relaxing.Ā faves: je ne sais pas, ça ira
Ʃdith piaf
i practically grew up on edith piaf, even before i started learning french properly. her music is wonderful and definitely classic. faves: la vie en rose, a l'enseigne de la fille sans coeur, Ā non, je ne regrette rien
+more
i love these songs, but i have yet to listen to more music from these artists! theyāre still fantastic
au revoir + shoutout @ciralismā for recommending coeur de pirate to me in the first place!! xx
I keep being surprised when stromae is included in one of these lists even tho I know heās super popular in the french speaking communities
me when i get my student loan

OMG YOUāRE RIGHT
and it has its right paw up! the correct paw for this. and from the markings on its ears, it looks like it might be a calico cat. which is the luckiest kind!
extremely lucky cat
I donāt even care if it actually works, Iām mostly reblogging because itās freaking adorable.
cute cat and need money, good post, 10/10
in case anyones interested in the other versions
http://www.namaii.com/manekineko/maneki-neko-types.html
Yāknow I reblogged this a bit ago and was saved from financial probation and getting kicked out of school because of it, just mere months from graduation. Got a call from the financial aid advisor telling me that they made a mistake with filing my account (or some other sort of clerical error) and said that, basically, they owe me money. Welp.
Last time I reblogged the money cat, I won two $100 gift cards at work.
CASES!
Iām really curious about this one. Iād appreciate any comment, especially from natives speakers of languages that donāt have cases!
How are you learning what case you should use for XYZ verb? Do you have any pattern or you must learn it by heart? Since I am a Polish native speaker, itās interesting to me how you usually learn it?
the quote that struck me most from this post. if itās worth it, fight for it.
20 THINGS YOU SHOULD DO EVERYDAY 1. Wake up earlier. Not only does this improve productivity but it also gives you more time to make a good, hearty breakfast. 2. Make your bed. Letās be real, being welcomed to a tidy bed after a long day at work/school (or a long day in general) is probably the best feeling anyone will ever experience. 3. If you want, spend a little more time on your appearance. Take some time choosing an outfit, applying make up or whatever. Do what helps you boost your confidence and self-esteem. 4. Stay hydrated, folks. Keep a bottle of water with you wherever you go. 5. Stretch everyday or start yoga (or do both, why not?) 6. Create a playlist consisting of songs that make you happy and listen to it. Listen to songs for the mood you want to be in, instead of the mood you are in. 7. Compliment at least one person per day. This could be an acquaintance, co-worker, class mate, stranger, whoever! 8. Use your manners. If someone holds the door for you, lets you go first etc, they did it voluntarily and didnāt have to do it, so a āthank youā wouldnāt hurt. 9. Eat your fruit and vegetables and always choose the healthy version over the junk food. 10. Have a good laugh. Catch up with friends, watch some āParks and Recreationā, go see some stand-up comedy, reminisce about funny moments that have happened to you. You donāt need to be a doctor to know that humour has many benefits. 11. Be optimistic. Always look at the positives. Thereās no point on focusing on the negatives because that isnāt going to help anyones mood at all. 12. Exercise. It doesnāt have to be anything to intense. A run around the block, a walk with your dog or even a āJust Danceā session will do the job.Ā 13.Bring a book/magazine or collect the daily newspaper with you. Spend you spare time reading. 14. Try and learn something new everyday. This can either be an interesting fact you saw online or a new skill someone taught you. 15. Help others when you are able to. Help your classmates with school work or offer to help you struggling neighbour lift those heavy objects. 16. Stop procrastinating. No matter how unmotivated you are to, push yourself and complete what you need to complete. Do what you gotta do. You know youāll love yourself for doing it. 17. Drink some tea, because that stuff is goooooood (and also beneficial). 18.Make time to do things that help you relax, whether thatās painting, having baths, doing you nails or going for a run. 19. Donāt dwell on your mistakes, but instead grow and learn from them. 20. And lastly, be kind to yourself. If you love who you are, everyone else will
