I think the fact that within Hogwarts there’s a lot of distaste for Slytherin and Hufflepuff shows some interesting insight into the wizarding community. Like, Hufflepuff represents hard work and fairness, right? But there’s the idea that Hufflepuffs are losers, sort of the proverbial nice guys who finish last. On the other hand, Slytherins, who represent cunning and ambition and personal drive, are seen as cutthroat and generally nasty and mean. 

Ultimately, Hufflepuff and Slytherin are both rooted in philosophies on self betterment and achieving success in life, both in terms of being a better person and being a more powerful/wealthy person. The obvious question raised by Hogwarts student’s disapproval of both Slytherin and Hufflepuff is this: if it makes you a loser to succeed through hard work and fairness, but a cheat to succeed through cleverness and an attitude of doing whatever it takes to achieve your goals, how is someone in the wizarding world expected to gain power/wealth/status if they aren’t already born with it?

It’s also worth noting that in a world where magic can do your work for you, Hufflepuffs are scoffed at for being willing to work at all, and Slytherins are shunned for taking advantage of magic to it’s fullest.

I just want to yell so many good things about Britney Spears. Look at this parenting right here; rather than just twist their arms and tell the ‘smile or no McFlurry on the drive home’ she’s checking if her little boys are comfortable with the cameras and attention and if not, no problem baby boy, you go chill. And I have no problem with her staying to get more pictures, especially not when her other adorable kid wants to.  I mean, it’s her job up to a point. And we all know for a fact she probably watched the film with both the little bugs in her lap anyway. 

Considering what she dealt with and went through in front of paps….god, I love her.

I’m literally in the middle of a living, breathing example of how close we still are to Jim Crow, segregation, and the inertia of white supremacy.

I’m in Alabama at my stepdad’s high school reunion. Class of 1973. The school was created after they closed the Black and white schools and merged them into one…keeping the colors, mascot, and school song of the previous white school. We’re at a picnic and they’re showing a slideshow of the graduating class…over half of which are white…not a single one of whom is here today. Again, this reunion is packed but there’s not one single white person. I asked why and was told, “They have their own.”

My stepdad is 62. The abuse he and his classmates endured at the hands of their white classmates 44 years ago is still present and real for them. Those white folks still have no desire to associate with the Black people they went to school with. In those 44 years, those white folks have raised kids and have grandkids to whom they have no doubt passed on their racism.

This stuff wasn’t “so long ago” and it’s not “in the past.” People are still alive and living with this daily.
