‘Max would NEVER think that Mike was a better boyfriend than Lucas-‘ at the beginning of season 3 Max literally says that Mike and El always running off to spend time together is “romantic”. She’s the only member of the party who isn’t pissed with Mike for doing this. This isn’t the Lucas who tried reach out for Max after she continually pushed away all her friends due to grief or who sobbed while she died in his arms - this is the Lucas who’s in a silly middle school relationship, points out when Max has a new zit and drank all of their water and then spat it back out for her when she got annoyed. This is the Lucas that Max is breaking up with roughly once a month. This isn’t the Mike who couldn’t understand El in the slightest and had no understanding of her feelings - this is the Mike who had a sixth sense for when she was feeling any kind of discomfort.

There are going to be plenty of things to criticise about Tf85 I’m sure, but this one line in the trailer isn’t it. And if you do want to criticise this one line in the trailer, then you also have to criticise the way Max and Lucas’ relationship was written in season 3.

‘It’s mileven propaganda-‘ why exactly are you surprised that what the writers view as the main romantic relationship in the show is being centred? And I have my own criticisms about how they killed El and separated her from everyone she loves in the actual show just to freeze her in time as this sweet little girl who’s never going to get to live a full life with these people in the spin-off, but mileven being centre stage in this show is like… obvious. And everything we’ve seen in the trailers is in-line with what we saw of their relationship in the earlier seasons. Remember, this is not the mileven of the later seasons where they fucked their relationship so badly that people started to believe that Mike was actually gay and the show had secretly been writing a huge, elaborate gay romance this whole time.

Again, there will be plenty to criticise about this show once it comes out, but that is the case with like… every season of stranger things past season 1. And maybe you should wait till the actual show comes out to complain about these things, instead of getting pissed about single lines in the trailer.

Tumblr really took the idea that a lot of straight romances are generically written and misogynistic and decided that meant every single ship between a man and woman is boring, badly written, and regressive.

This is exactly why I like Max/Lucas. He has genuine care and only wants to help her despite her trying to push him away and then he takes care of her while she's in that coma like trance in season 5 for 18 months. That is real love.

They absolutely deserved to enjoy life together.

There's also the thought that because there are some similarities between a badly written straight romance and a friendship between two men, it means that friendship is actually a romance. And that annoys me even more.

(To be clear, it's not that I have a problem with people making ships out of canonical friendship. It's the insistence that said romance is actually canon and that's the evidence for it.)

sometimes i just think about how much lucas is carrying

-> he's the only member of the original party without an older sibling, or older sibling figure, and though it's made clear that he has a healthy homelife in s2, he still can't open up about his trauma to his family, like the others are (theoretically) able to.

dustin has steve, mike has nancy, will has jonathan & joyce.

jane has hop, and later the byers

erica's wonderful, but she becomes involved relatively late, and she's his little sister. it's not the same as his parents, or an older sibling, knowing; he can't lean on her in the same way. the expectation is that he shields her, not vice versa

maybe there's something to say about his relationship with max, here, because she's the only other member of the full party (as in the boys + max + jane) in the same position - there's no older member of the group who is 'hers' above anyone else's

i'm not saying that lucas, or max, is completely isolated, but i do think it's something worth noting, and that it's sad!
